Thanks to his affable charm, charismatic screen presence, and seeming agelessness, Paul Rudd has become one of Hollywood's most endearing performers. Though primarily known for his comedic roles, Rudd was classically trained at the beginning of his career, studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts-West and the British Drama Academy at Oxford University. This academic background perhaps lends an emotional truth to Rudd's numerous sarcastic and sardonic characters.
While many actors can play a funny jerk, it's hard to bring warmth and empathy to that same archetype, a specific chemistry Rudd has made his own. Rudd is also known for his frequent collaborations with writer/producer/director Judd Apatow and comedians Michael Ian Black, David Wain, and Michael Showalter. Outside of acting, Rudd is also a producer and writer who has managed to keep both feet in television and film throughout his career. A grounded performer who also loves a good prank,...

Aaron Ryder, the Oscar-nominated producer of “Arrival,” is launching a new production company, Ryder Picture Company. In addition, the Ryder Picture Company has entered into a first-look feature film deal with MGM.
In an interview with Variety, Ryder said the deal with MGM came about because of his friendship with the film group’s chairman, Michael De Luca. The two worked together on Lisa Joy’s “Reminiscence,” an upcoming science-fiction thriller that will star Hugh Jackman and that is now in post-production for Warner Bros.
“They reached out to me because MGM is ramping up and bringing in a lot of creative people and wants to be a home for filmmakers,” said Ryder.
Under De Luca, MGM has signed a number of high-profile talent deals with the likes of Killer Films, while also nabbing big projects such as “Fiddler on the Roof,” which will be directed by “Hamilton” wunderkind Thomas Kail,...

Three decades into a diverse career across TV and film, director Andrew Fleming (he of The Craft and Hamlet 2 fame) has finally finished his ten-years-in-the-making passion project, something he calls “a gay romantic comedy about two men who are drinking and arguing.”
TV celebrity chef Erasmus (Coogan) is an insufferable snob and the face of his own TV show, directed by his long-suffering boyfriend, Paul (Rudd). The pair live in a sprawling ranch in Santa Fe, entertaining friends with lavish parties and celebrating their own freedom with abandon.
That is until Angel (Gore) comes along. The troubled ten-year-old grandson Erasmus didn’t know existed, Angel has seen his loser father Beau (Mcdorman) end up in jail one too many times, and has sought shelter with the only family he has left.
Shocked, Erasmus is reluctant to let a child spoil his idyllic, borderline hedonistic lifestyle, while his lover Paul,...

Flamboyant TV chef Erasmus Brumble (Coogan) along with his director and long-term partner Paul (Rudd), are happy going through life playing as hard as they work. But suddenly they have to decide whether to grow-up or continue down their well-trodden path, when Erasmus’s estranged grandson, Bill (played by Jack Gore), unexpectedly turns up at their door, after his father is taken away to serve time in prison. Having another mouth to feed can always come with its strains, but the couple’s fears that they are not yet cut out to be devoted parents become apparent very quickly, with their lavish social lifestyle getting in the way of their duties as responsible guardians. As unsuited as this small family may initially seem, the loving bond...

A lot can happen in 10 years. That’s how long it’s been since writer-director Andrew Fleming first hatched the concept for “Ideal Home,” the idea coming to him when he was on the set of his arid Sundance hit, “Hamlet 2.” The world has come pretty damn far since then, if not quite far enough.
Back in 2008, a casually disposable comedy about the virtues of queer parenthood might have seemed progressive, even if it starred two straight actors and made their characters into human cartoons whose sexuality is used as the punchline of almost every joke. In 2018, that same comedy feels like a time capsule that someone forgot to bury — you can still get a laugh or two from looking at the stuff inside, but it’s hard to know what we’re supposed to do with it now that the future that “Ideal Home” wants is already behind us.

In 1980, a 19-year-old man named Robert Shafran walked on campus for his first day of college. To his bewilderment, the kids greeted him as if they knew him already and were surprised that he was back. It didn’t take long for Robert to figure out that he had an identical twin brother named Eddy about whom he knew nothing. After they met, and it was reported in the press, yet another identical twin brother named David contacted Robert and Eddy.
Director Tim Wardle’s carefully structured and suspenseful documentary “Three Identical Strangers” starts at this point where all the brothers first met, and it mimics the “can you believe it?” tone of their initial press. Robert, Eddy, and David made the rounds of all the talk shows in 1980 and became media celebrities. They also all moved into the same apartment in Manhattan, and they enjoyed some wild times.

There’s a fair amount of pressure on Debra Granik’s new indie: Every film she’s taken to Sundance has been a winner, starting with her short “Snake Feed” in 1998. In 2004, her celebrated drama “Down to the Bone” brought awards for both her and then-up-and-coming actress Vera Farmiga. And 2010’s “Winter’s Bone” went on to earn four Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture and another for the film’s little-known lead, Jennifer Lawrence.
So yeah, comparisons will be made. But are they fair? Not really. It would be unlikely for any director to achieve the same sort of commercial triumph twice in a row. But it would also be understandably tempting to try.
So kudos to this subtle and intelligent filmmaker, for avoiding the enticement to lock in awards by hitting easy targets. Even the title is suggestive of Granik’s restrained approach: “Leave No Trace” is gentle and intimate and personal,...

Perhaps the best way to approach “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” the sequel to the 2015 Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure that introduced the shrinking superhero, is as a Disney movie rather than a Marvel one. And when I say “Disney movie,” I mean a very specific kind: the goofy Dexter Riley comedies.
From 1969 to 1975, Kurt Russell played affable college student Dexter, who kept running afoul of science experiments that rendered him strong, super-smart or even invisible. Substitute Paul Rudd’s amiable ex-con Scott Lang for Dexter — with Michael Douglas subbing for scientist William Schallert, and Walton Goggins taking the Keenan Wynn/Cesar Romero role of the nefarious mobster — and “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is basically “The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes” for the 21st century.
Mind you, I mean this as a compliment; after a rough start in the previous entry, director Peyton Reed (“Down With Love”) seems much more comfortable balancing wacky antics,...

Writer-director Andrew Fleming is one of the best and most underrated makers of comedies today, and his new film “Ideal Home” is delightful in spite of a premise that sounds un-promising.
Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd play Erasmus and Paul, a gay couple who are saddled with Erasmus’s grandson after Erasmus’ ne’er-do-well son Beau is arrested. Trying to evade the police in the first scene, Beau gets stuck in a window, and Fleming lingers on a shot of his behind in tighty-whities in a way that somehow feels more kindly than lecherous; certainly there are worse ways to enliven a basically expository sequence.
Erasmus is a popular and snobby TV food show host based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Paul is his producer; they have been together for ten years and they bicker near-constantly. “Part of me wants to stick around just to watch him die,” Paul tells one of their crew,...

“Ideal Home,” a featherweight big-screen sitcom in which Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd play testy romantic partners who wind up as parental caretakers of a 10-year-old boy, is the perfect example of how a movie can be progressive and retrograde at the same time. It’s supposed to feel cutting edge that Coogan and Rudd, who are both terrific actors, adopt a no-big-deal posture toward portraying a gay couple. If only the movie itself were as nonchalant about it! Written and directed by Andrew Fleming, who has had a fluky, hit-or-miss career but built a good comic pedestal for Coogan a decade ago with the dementedly funny “Hamlet 2,” “Ideal Home” is never not painfully aware that its two main characters are gay. It’s a cozy duet of tit-for-tat bitchery that, at times, carries the nagging whisper of a liberal minstrel show.

The Maui Film Festival celebrates its 19th anniversary this year, and, despite taking place in an ever-more crowded calendar of summer film fests, its popularity continues to grow. The event attracts locals and mainlanders alike, and draws both casual fans and ardent cineastes with its unique mixture of sun, sand and life-affirming cinema.
And this time around, in an unexpected turn, the eruption of the Kilauea Volcano on the neighboring Big Island of Hawaii has raised the Maui fest’s profile to new highs.
“People shouldn’t worry,” says fest founder and director Barry Rivers. “That’s 100 miles away and we’re not affected at all.”
Rivers stresses that Maui’s rugged beauty, with its beaches, ocean and backdrop of mountains and jungle, makes it “a very special location — and a lot of the festival is held outdoors.” Venues include the Celestial Cinema at the Wailea Gold & Emerald Golf Course,...

A shining example of the cult classic, “The Craft” has lived a long movie life since its debut in 1996. Starring Neve Campbell, Christine Taylor, and an unforgettable Fairuza Balk, “The Craft” never gets old to revisit around Halloween time—or any time, for that matter. Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan in a movie together—what could possibly go wrong? Everything apparently. In their new movie, Ideal Home, Rudd and Coogan stars as a gay couple that suddenly finds themselves the caretaker of a young kid. The story line is fairly interesting enough to get us curious, and Rudd and Coogan are incredibly funny guys, but something doesn’t fit quite right. In the trailer, we are shown that Rudd and Coogan’s characters are well to do. They work. They don’t always get along. They love each other. We see it, but we don’t necessarily feel it. You

The Ideal Home trailer teams very funny people Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan as a gay couple who suddenly find themselves raising a kid. Plenty of wacky hijinks and jokes about Taco Bell follow! Also: Paul Rudd has a great haircut. What more do you need? Alright, I’ll be blunt: this doesn’t look great. The trailer for Ideal Home is […]

Feeling out of touch that you don’t know what the film “Ideal Home” is? Don’t worry, you wouldn’t be alone; Steven Coogan and Paul Rudd have cowboyed up for a film that no one saw coming let alone knew existed.
In “Ideal Home,” Coogan and Rudd play Erasmus and Paul, a bickering gay couple whose lives are turned inside out when a ten-year-old boy shows up at their door claiming to be Erasmus’ grandson.

"You have the biggest heart of any man I know." An international trailer has debuted for the indie comedy Ideal Home, the latest feature made by Hamlet 2 (remember that one?) director Andrew Fleming. Ideal Home is both written and directed by Fleming, and is about a wealthy, bickering gay couple whose life is turned inside out when a ten-year old boy shows up at their door claiming to be Erasmus' grandson. This is a familiar story, but the twist is the two dads aspect. Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd star as Erasmus and Paul, and the cast also includes Jake McDorman, Jesse Luken, Jack Gore, and Alison Pill. This looks surprisingly warm-hearted, not as overtly comedic as I was expecting from that description. Give it a watch. Here's the first international trailer for Andrew Fleming's Ideal Home, direct from YouTube:...

Exclusive: Fortitude International to launch sales in Cannes.
Fortitude International will introduce international buyers in Cannes to The Medusa starring Jesse Eisenberg, Pierce Brosnan and Vanessa Redgrave.
Peter Webber will direct his second film based on a renowned work of art after 2003’s Girl With A Pearl Earring, named after the painting by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.
The Medusa stars Eisenberg as Theodore Gericault, the early 19th century pioneer of the French Romantic movement whose masterpiece The Raft Of The Medusa was inspired by the sinking of a French frigate.
Survivors of the wreck spoke of incompetence and cannibalism and the painting stirred anti-royalist sentiment at the time of King Louis Xviii’s rule.
Brosnan will portray Gericault’s uncle Caruel, the artist’s nemesis who is hell-bent on ruining him, while Redgrave plays the painter’s anti-royalist innkeeper.
Sophia Al-Maria adapted the screenplay from Jonathan Miles’s book The Wreck Of The Medusa.

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are teaming up again in “The Trip to Spain,” and a new trailer teases more of the same pithy conversations fans love. The duo reunited with director Michael Winterbottom for the series, which will air in the UK, and the subsequent feature-length edit that’s headed to America, set to premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. “Spain” is the third entry in the series, following 2010’s “The Trip” and 2014’s “The Trip to Italy.”

Ensuring that no tender moment is forced to exist without some bizarro cadences or weird personal choices flittering around the outside, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Steve Coogan and Christopher Walken have both signed on for the cast of Irreplaceable You, a new romantic drama from Veep director Stephanie Laing.
Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Michiel Huisman (a.k.a. Daario from Game Of Thrones), the film follows two childhood sweethearts suddenly separated by an unexpected death. Bess Wohl wrote the script.
Walken’s most recent roles include a turn in last year’s Eddie The Eagle; Coogan is currently busy with The Dinner and Ideal Home with Paul Rudd, and continues to make noises about a new Alan Partridge series some time soon.

Since her brilliant transition from Disney star to rebellious teen in Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers,” Selena Gomez continues to surprise. Too bad the same can’t be said for her new movie, “The Fundamentals of Caring,” a saccharine buddy dramedy from writer-director Rob Burnett (best known as the executive producer of “The Late Show with David Letterman”).
“The Fundamentals of Caring” stars Paul Rudd as Ben, a grieving father and failed writer who takes a job as a caretaker for an amusingly surly teenage boy. Not that Trevor, played by a doe-eyed Craig Roberts (“Submarine”), doesn’t have a reason to be surly; he suffers from muscular dystrophy, a disorder that severely impairs his physical abilities but leaves his mind sharp. Ben and Trevor strike up an all-too-likely friendship, each being the only one to tell the other the hard truths.

Editor’s Note: There are so many different paths to becoming a movie director, but a career in late night isn’t one of the more common ones. Rob Burnett spent 30 years working for David Letterman, rising from intern to executive producer, before directing Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez in the upcoming Netflix release “The Fundamentals of Caring.” We asked the writer/director what lessons he took from “The Late Show” and how did it prepare him for being a filmmaker. What we got was the following essay, which is a great insight into the mindset it takes to direct a feature film.

The Trip to Italy was, by most estimates, no inferior companion to 2011’s generally beloved The Trip, and so it would only make sense that Michael Winterbottom, Steve Coogan, and Rob Brydon have a third feature — with a third series of locations — in the works. Next on their plate, according to NME, is a “venture from the North Atlantic to the Mediterranean coast,” the latest set of antics taking place within “Cantabria, the Basque region, Aragon, Rioja, Castile-La Mancha and Andalusia.”
As was the case with the first two installments, this will also be shot, edited, and presented as a television series for BBC2; it’s uncertain whether this will be before (as in the original outing) or after (as in the second) the feature premieres. Shooting begins sometime this year, perhaps after Coogan completes production on An Ideal Home, which Variety tells us he’s leading alongside Paul Rudd.

Ant-Man and Alan Partridge are set to join forces for a second time in An Ideal Home – a new comedy drama, written and directed by Andrew Fleming (Hamlet 2, Dick). Marvel’s newest star, Paul Rudd, and British star Steve Coogan already starred opposite each other in 2011’s Our Idiot Brother, but this latest collaboration will see the pair united in marriage.
Coogan will play a famous celebrity, while Rudd will play his more reclusive, shy spouse. Their extravagant, public lifestyle places their relationship under considerable strain, which is amplified by the unexpected arrival of a young man claiming to be the grandson Coogan never realized he had. With his grandson in dire straits, with nowhere else to go, the couple agree to welcome him into their home, in the secret hope that his presence will heal the rifts forming in their marriage.
