One of Shandling's Last Appearances
caspian197824 March 2016
After hearing of Garry Shandling's death, I recall watching this episode months earlier. It is shocking how much they talk about death and getting old. Reminiscing of the passing o Robin Williams and traveling down memory lane at the Comedy Store, it's touching to think that this was one of the last times we would see Garry Shandling. Watching Seinfeld and Shandling pay homage to the collage of photos of comedians that are on the wall at the Comedy Store, adds to the eeriness that man of their friends and comic partners have passed on. Jerry Seinfeld even says, "You have to die in your 60's to have people say, wow, he was young." Shandling later talks about what he wants at his funeral and writing a suicide note. Although entertaining and funny, there is a little bit of reality to why Shandling is talking so much about getting old and death. Garry later remarks as the two take a tour of their old studio that, "It's a different world and a different time." At the very end, Shandling talks about how he was mistaken for having died when talking to his doctor. By the end of the story, Shandling doesn't complete the sentence as the episode fades to black. A touching ending to his abrupt story.

In Restrospect, a Fitting Tribute to Shandling
wookietower25 July 2019
Obviously, no one knew it at the time but this was Shandling's final on screen appearance. The amount of time they spend talking about death, their friend and even Shandling's own discussion about mortality are eerie to watch at this point. Still, this was a great episode between 2 longtime friends and professional counterparts. I love hearing the stories about how these guys started, what goes into being a great comedian and (especially with this episode) their parallel careers.

These Two Gave Me So Many Laughs

I've been rewatching these shows, and am surprised at how much I missed the first time through when it was just an odd little web series.

I'm not sure if it's the early loss of Garry Shandling, or the memories of my own lost youth when I watched Garry's shows... but this episode left me with a feeling of melancholy. As we age and start sensing our own mortality, what was once silly laughter begins to take on different meaning.

Of course the episode is funny, but I found myself crying as Garry discussed the aspects of his own comedy era ending, and the reality of his own health and mortality staring him in the face. A reality we all end up facing at some point.

I miss him - I miss his awkward, humorous take on life and the laughter he brought to my life. He left this world too soon. I found this episode a great tribute to a funny man, but also a bit heartbreaking. I wish we all could have had more time with Garry Shandling.
