Formed by two former members of the Royal Ballet, Ballet Boyz is an all-male troupe dedicated to producing new work. Recorded at London's Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, this program showcases two of their recent most popular works - "Serpent" and "Fallen" - interspersed with interviews with the choreographers and members of the troupe.
I have to admit that I preferred "Fallen" to "Serpent"; the latter of these seemed too classically inspired, and the movements did not seem especially serpentine. Perhaps the dancers were inhibited by the presence of a live orchestra on stage (hitherto they had worked with recorded music), because their performances seemed a little tentative.
Not so with "Fallen," a much more aggressive work with a score to match. Perhaps the dance had religious overtones - of the Fall of Man, perhaps - but really it should be appreciated as an experience rather than trying to decode its meaning.
