How I Simprovised The Simpsons
santifersan13 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
One day I came up with a viewing method to watch this series without noticing its chronological decline in quality. So, I thought of watching it not in chronological order, but with a system based on the Imdb ratings of the episodes. The first half of the system coincides with the weaker episodes and therefore works very well as introductory episodes. It's like a good movie that starts with an introduction and nothing interesting has happened yet. This episode belongs to that first half of the system, meaning that it is one of the many introductions to The Simpsons series. Therefore, seeing Homer being terrified of public speaking in this episode, and then in later episodes seeing that he has overcome this fear, makes sense and the humor works. It's as if the chronological order starts with the weaker episodes of the series. In conclusion, I was a genius for creating this viewing method to not perceive the discomfort that prevented me from enjoying the humor.

Another episode that contradicts itself

So suddenly Homer has a fear of public speaking? Shall we ignore the previous 600 episodes and the movie, where he happily and proudly speaks to the whole town? The premise is flawed from the get-go, and the jokes just fall flat (as usual).

My biggest issue is the improvised ending - 3 minutes of live animation talking to live callers. Every second is cringe-inducing, and I just feel so bad for Castellaneta who was contracted into this train-wreck. The live broadcast version comes to nothing, and the reruns are no better - 3 minutes of random babbling to fill time that just makes me want to pull my hair out.

As Dr Ian Malcolm once said: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."

An Episode that Wins cause it takes Risks,

Simprovised is a terrific Simpsons episode with a very well written plot and a ton of funny moments. It is great fun as we see Homer form an obsession with improvisational comedy, the bits he performs on stage in front of Springfield residents are very funny and Dan Castellaneta manages to really make it feel like Homer is making these up as he goes on. I did find the side story to be a bit forced and unnecessary, though I will admit it had heart and was not just another gag filled time filler, it had no merit, I would have preferred for a story as good as this one to have no distractions. Of course I could not review this episode without mentioning the live segment, it was a huge risk for the show and they succeeded, Castellaneta has a clear talent for improvisation that is very evident, he manages to keep the personalty of the character and be very funny while doing it. Simprovised is a very enjoyable Simpsons as it tells an original story that the series has never done before and is not afraid to take risks.

After butchering a speech at work, Homer turns to improvisational comedy to gain back his confidence.
