Whoa! I wasn't Expecting That!
Robinson251125 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I've heard so much criticism about this episode being 'too violent', 'inappropriate', 'not festive', and while I understand the violence complaint a little, the other two just baffle me.

This episode surprised me a little with it's violence, Not Going Out has never got this violent, yeah sure we've had the main characters cornered in the bathroom by a woman with a knife, and a mad butcher being severely wounded by being shot repeatedly with a nail gun, but having the main characters being chased around a department store by a man with a gun, was a little surprising, but that's why it was on at quarter-past 10 in the evening, Not Going Out has never really been family viewing, so expecting a nice cosy family Christmas story, is like expecting a Christmas heatwave.

People have complained about this episode being 'inappropriate' because of the events of 2015, something I find absolutely ridiculous. Seriously, this wasn't written last week, this was written about 4-5 months ago, and expecting the BBC to pull the episode is even more ridiculous. I don't personally see how this can be conceived as offensive, despite the dark subject matter, it's done light- heartedly and is the scenes with Lee, Lucy and Toby being chased around the store being shot, is one of my favourite moments because it's so fun.

Now that that tangent's out of the way, what about the episode itself. Well it's funny, but Not Going Out has been much funnier in the past! I feel that changing the format may have worked for the story, but removing the live studio audience was a mistake, instead it's replaced with a laughter track that was obviously added at the last minute because it's so quiet and it feels like if this was a real audience, they weren't impressed!

The acting is usual Not Going Out standard: Cheesy, and the script is rather well written despite a rather forced character-arc about Lee proving he is better than his dad, which is just there because they needed someone to save the day, without it feeling out-of- character, spoiler alert: it does anyway!

Christmas Shopping is a step down from the brilliant episodes of the previous series, but the amount of hate this episode has received is something I find ridiculous, it's Not Going Out you'd expect to find stuff like this, despite popular belief, Not Going Out is not a family show. It's not as funny as I'd hoped, and the plot is a little forced, but I feel it's enough to be fun and satisfying, just don't expect anything mind blowing!

Absolute brilliance
Sleepin_Dragon26 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Possibly the best thing on Christmas telly, absolute belly laugh fun from start to finish. I didn't think they could beat the Christmas Special when they stayed in the spooky House, but they managed to with this one. Lee Mack if you glance at this review I am begging you to make more, this was a real Christmas Cracker, funny, moving, and at times it had me slightly on edge, it was brilliantly done. Katy Wix once again had some fabulously funny lines delivered with her usual brilliance. It dared to be different, and it worked.

10/10 What Christmas telly should be about, just comedy brilliance, Loved it!

Suspenseful episode
lrzellazhi1 January 2021
This was a very well done episode and so many parts of the episode was super suspenseful and well played out. I enjoyed the difference in this episode that also plays onto the characters' usual behaviours. Made me laugh and say 'oh no....' so many times. In fact, I created an account just to rate this episode. It's my favourite from all these series! :)

Boring, overplayed and unrealistic
rcraig-6875827 December 2015
Sally Bretton and Katy Wix don't even want to be here. Bad guy racks shells on his pump action shotgun and no shells eject for the 1st half of the show, then racks enough shells to fill a few boxes of ammo. Shot pattern is like a pistol rather than a sawed off shotgun. Probably flies in the UK where the population has been groomed to believe that guns are evil and kill people on their own (knives and bombs are OK thou). Daisy has a few funny line but they seems forced. Lee Mack is OK but Sally Bretton's character seems downright mean. Anna is a rude mean b**ch as well. This was probably overall, the best British sitcom ever, but alas, it is well over.

Christmas Shopping

If you're in the right mood you'll see this as a fun Christmas caper, with lots of good gags, and some nice moments.

I can see why others might find it all a bit violent though, with quite a thin story being stretched to 45 mins.

It wasn't one of my favourite episodes.

Xmas Turkey.
hitchcockthelegend26 December 2015
I consider myself a massive fan of the show and of Lee Mack and his work in general. So it's with heavy heart to find that this Xmas special turned out to be a turkey dinner.

Lee, Lucy (heavily pregnant), Frank, Daisy, Toby and Anna get caught up in a robbery of a department store and are locked in for the night. All while trying to not upset the man with the big gun who is in with them.

It feels like it was just thrown together to fill a Christmas special slot on the BBC. The customary vocal pizazz between Lee and Lucy is replaced by boorish passages of play, unfunny jokes about pregnancy get churned out, whilst the other cast members - with the exception of Bobby Ball as Frank - are reduced to jostling for comedy moments that just aren't there. The premise quickly wears thin around the 25 minute mark, leaving the episode straining desperately for humour for another 20 minutes. While the pay off at the finale is warm for us many legions of fans, but it's unsurprising and doesn't go off with a big bang.

Since the great Xmas special in 2013, (The House), the two subsequent Xmas specials have declined in quality. If there is to be another series of Not Going Out, it's hoped that Lee can get is mojo back. For he is far better than this latest work is suggesting. 5/10
