Trying an innocent man
bkoganbing1 December 2016
The spotlight is on Bridget Moynahan in this Blue Bloods story. Moynahan and her ace investigator Steven Schirippa who is becoming my favorite in Blue Bloods.

A hung jury was the verdict in a homicide trial of a citizen being killed during a carjacking. A professional carjacker got charged with the crime. There is a similarity here to a classic Columbo episode where Val Avery a professional burglar is accused of a pair of murders committed by a burglar.

So Moynahan and Schirippa go to work and guess what, an innocent man was being tried. Moynahan inherits this case from Diane Neal whose most famous role was that of ADA Casey Novack on SVU. The scene between the two of them who are rivals is a classic.

Most of the rest of the case is whether the mayor will ask Tom Selleck to stay on. In this family of cops that sure is going to effect everyone at the Reagan dinner table. Donnie Wahlberg is the voice of reason at said table.

One of the best Blue Bloods episodes around.

Winning Gracelessly

This is an interesting episode in that it makes the debut of Steve Schirripa in his long-running role as a D. A. Investigator which he has made into my favourite character on the show. We also have a rare case of no Donnie Wahlberg storyline for a change (yay!), and as a result, no appearance by Marisa Ramirez (also yay!). Somehow, Jamie is doing what seems a lot like detective work in a subplot in this episode but is still working alongside his partner.

The main storyline involves a case that had been prosecuted by Erin's colleague Kelly Blake, played by one of my old favourites, Diane Neal, ex of Law & Order. When a mistrial was declared due to a balky juror, the case gets assigned to Erin, who is even more self-righteous and smug than her usual self in dealing with her co-worker. Thanks to Anthony Abetemarco a new guilty party is identified and Erin gets her culprit.

A case of gracelessness must have swept through the Reagan family here, as Frank gets his nose out of joint at how the newly re-elected Mayor Poole is tardy in asking him to stay on the job. This seemed a bit of a stretch and something the writers had to hatch using the press as an excuse. For the unnecessary self-righteousness on the part of both Reagan's I can only give this otherwise strong episode 8 out of 10 stars.

Warning: Spoilers
Danny basically appears in only 1 season of this excellent episode and is highly effective as the voice of reason.

The News hounds create tension when they ask Frank if he will serve another 4 years as Police Commissioner after the mayor has been re-elected. Problem is that the latter has not reached out to Frank. Frank correctly states that he serves at the mayor's leisure, but inwardly is seething when the mayor refuses to call a meeting with him to discuss the situation.

Ever wonder why all crimes seem to be happening solely on one street? Jaime and Eddie are faced with the dilemma. While I will not give the guilty away, this should serve as a warning to all tenants and landlords alike.

Erin shows her mettle by pursuing a case that another D.A. hadn't completed. There is an element here of 12 Angry Men and it works quite well.
