This movie strikes a great chord of truth

Very ambitious movie and subject matter. I think the Director was able to portray some of the incredibly hard decisions that are made by our teenagers today.

The cinematography was OK. The car crash was accomplished well without a real car crash. I think some of the characters were a bit too clueless. I have friends that were cops and parents. NOTHING got passed them! So, the police mom was too clueless for my taste.

Now I do know firsthand how parents think their kids are angels, but I also know how untrue that is. So, in that regard, this movie strikes a great chord of truth.

This is a good attempt by a young director.

This is a good attempt by a young director. The good news is that he finished the feature. There were strengths such as strong performances by Margot Lubliner as Elise and Dylan Amsems as Danny. The film opens with Elise's mother, Sarah Wetmore, whose profoundly mediocre acting announces the film as a dud. The sound has the quality of being recorded in a tin can. Other details like Elise having this massive nasal injury and then being at school without a trace stretched belief. The injury makeup was also awful. Teens playing with drugs and sex and not having supportive parents is a tragedy. The seeds of a good film are here. I suggest that the director work with a casting director who can spot talent for his next work and also learn how to communicate to actors to elicit film performances. Even the supporting players like the other police woman and the derogatory student make obvious and awkward choices. To the film maker, don't be too discouraged. Keep learning, keep going, keep doing.

"The Art of Escape" rates at a very amateur level.

Warning: Spoilers
Even though I can acknowledge the serious issues of this film, it was almost agonizing to get thru it. The actors were OK at best, the characters weren't consistent with their own desires and the pacing was way too slow. Elise seemed to be the main character yet the structure only loosely supported her. The tone was very heavy handed. Overall, "The Art of Escape" rates at a very amateur level. Teenagers do stupid things sometimes and seemingly without provocation, and this film had the chance to show the motives behind such erratic behavior -- it touched on it here and there, but mostly missed the mark. And it's very hard to feel for such characters or to be on their side. An example is when Elise chased Charlotte even when Charlotte rebuked her, then followed Alianna because of the chance to meet with Charlotte and when Charlotte finally comes back, Elise doesn't like it when Alianna makes fun of Charlotte but then goes off with Alianna -- ??! Elise didn't approve of the shoplifting, didn't approve of the drugs, then turns her back on everything she cares about and follows Alianna -- no, not buying it, her turn from concerned friend to wild child was not believable (and it should have been). There were some good points though. The car crash was nicely handled production wise. The quick cuts and split screen when the kids got high were a nice touch. Would love to see more of that kind of influence in the photography and editing like when Charlotte and then Elise goes down the dark road with Alianna. The last shot of Alianna with her next "conquest" sitting a few feet from Elisa who was sitting a few feet from Charlotte was such a nice display of the relationships of these girls and gave this film a strong ending.

Amazing for what it is

First of all I have to say congratulations to everyone involved this movie is very impressive especially considering the fact that it is almost entirely student made. I enjoyed this movie but it is definitely not without its flaws. The acting is excellent especially among the main characters. Though the mom character becomes annoying as the movie progresses and I began to tune out whenever she came up on screen.

It is very well shot but I did not understand the significance of the shoes in the film. There are many shots of people's feet and shoes hanging from a wire and they seem to have no significance to the overarching story line of the film. The editing in this movie is very well done the way shots are cut together in quick succession is excellent. The sound was uneven at times in the film and I don't know if that was because the film is student made but it was distracting. The short time lapses in the film were very jarring and unnecessary, they added nothing to the film and only served a purpose as a semi-show offy stylistic choice. The film does have a very important message about peer pressure and societal expectations but it is slightly too blunt with its message.

Overall this movie gets a 7.8/10 because it is well made and well acted but it definitely becomes annoying towards the end as it states its message too much.
