A Change in Direction
Hitchcoc11 November 2022
This one brings on a religious cult where polygamy reigns and the leader thinks with his crotch. There is intermarriage in his congregation and he is making himself out to be the new Jesus. The problem for him is they begin to have too many men and too few women, so little boys are sent out to survive on their own and a kind of Lord of the Flies thing develops. These guys are dangerous, killing anyone who crosses their path. Little boys are wired with explosives and sit in cars thinking they have no choice but to be deadly missiles. The second plot is Red fulfilling his promise to Finch to open his safe and get information. It appears that the next episode will let us know a bit about the result of that.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode begins in a church, it seems like a dark and creepy colt. A marriage founds place between father an daughter, a poisoned bomb was thrown into the church. Justin Kenyon is the leader of this colt. A van explodes when the police officers arrived. The FBI raiding Kenyon his church. Samar stopped a little boy from blowing up the van. The FBI found all the people murdered in the church, the kids escaped. Red arrived in St Petersburg. Ressler found 1 girl at the church, the only survivor. A man hitted Liz and Ressler their car with a gun. Ressler got attacked by The Watchers, they ubducted Amy. It's nice that we see Gaten Matarazzo in another role. Starkweather died on her injuries. Liz got ubducted by The Watchers. The FBI is just in time to save Liz and Ressler, Justin Kenyon was killed on a cruel way by The Watchers. Liz tries to stop David from exploding himself, another watcher shot down David he died instantly. Again a solid episode of The Blacklist Season 2, this show keeps fascinating me on the fast pace they act and produce this show.

Not my cup of tea

This was a fairly unique episode in the season so far, with a very gloomy and sinister atmosphere. While I do not mind that all too much by itself, I feel that the overall arc of this episode was a bit too vague (why would these guys be blacklisters?), as well as ended too quickly. It feels like a horror movie that should've been 100-120 minutes, which they tried to cram into a 45 minute episode along with FBI stuff.

All that combined leads this episode to be on the depressing side. It's not that I dont like the cult thematics (even though I suppose its not my favorite thing), and the kids were definitely scary; it's just that this horror theme would (in my eyes) have benefitted from either a longer explanation, or more time to work it out entirely.

It was definitely not a bad episode, it just wasn't really my thing.

Back to the roots (in my opinion)

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is fantastic. And it is a little bit like going back to the first season. There is an engaging mysterious plot, suspense, a fine amount of action (not too much), excellent characters and new clues for the main storyline about secrets of Red's past. Especially the hilarious scenes with James Spader and Clark Middleton were perfect. I think the Middleton character "Glen Carter" is the only person in the "Blacklist"-Universe who can do such word fights with Reddington - without the fear to be killed by Red. As always in "The Blacklist" every new clue creates more new questions, but hey, if they give to much away, they could end the series.

Some fellow critics said that the storyline is ridiculous and insulting. But why? There were always fanatic religious groups with sinister targets, who lived as a cult or wanted to change to world drastically. Kids as suicide bombers - well think about it - it's sad but it's possible in almost every religion, as long as there are some fanatics with their own sick view of life. And think of Red Reddingtons words from season 1: "The world isn't black and white" - and there are good people in the same way as bad people in every religion or gender or race. Just open your mind.

I think this episode is just great and entertaining except a few plot holes. James Spader is perfect as always and Megan Boone is back in action - away from her destructing behavior in the beginning of the season.

Until this point, this second season is weaker than the first, but with episodes like this, i have hope for a fantastic season finale. Back to the roots of the groundbreaking first season.

Sheesh... the writing and plot lines are getting ridiculous and insulting
rudy195723 February 2015
Not sure why, but the producers were obviously feeling compelled to conjure up white, Christian, militia villains as if that balances out various ethnic stereotypes by adding one that doesn't exist in real life and only serves to insult Christians by painting them as a cult. This series has built itself on entertaining stories and clever evil (if wholly improbable and over-the-top) villains, but it doesn't need to be playing mainstream hymns as if they were the background music for nefariousness. Worse yet, the story line of this episode was shallow and depressing rather than entertaining and clever. Well below standard for this series.
