Great episode. Brilliant writing and structure.

Great episode. Brilliant writing and structure.

Most of the episode is dialogue, except for a kickass Colleen Wing fight scene near the end.

The dialogue scenes are almost all two-handers, pairing up two characters with opposing views and letting them debate. Something which always makes for great drama. Danny/Davos, Colleen/Bakuto, Davos/Claire, Claire/Colleen, Colleen/Danny, etc. Scene after scene is filled with intelligent conflict, tension and meaningful development.

Intelligent conflict because, when you think about it, Danny and Davos basically want the same thing. So do Colleen and Bakuto. And Colleen and Danny.

The show has made some very clever storytelling decisions. Making Colleen one of the Hand and adding Davos to the story so late in the day, are two prominent examples. Both are shaking up the story at a time with the other Netflix/Marvel shows were slowing down.

Ward is missed, however.

And the Joy/Harold scenes here are brief. They are quietly working together now, while everyone else in the show's rich tapestry of characters is pulling and pushing at each other to try and find a way forward. Very exciting.

Appalling

I'm watching Iron Fist mainly because I'm a fan of Marvel, and enjoyed Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. Iron Fist is what I'd consider the let-down of the four, and it seems to come to a head in this episode.

The atmosphere is rudimentary, the script is pedestrian, and the acting is appalling. Antagonist "Bakuto" only expresses gravitas and authority in shouting and glowering, Davos and Colleen are as two-dimensional as cut- out stock characters, Meacham as bad guy is bordering on camp, and the Iron Fist himself behaves like a spoilt emo trust fund brat who's suffering an ongoing dissociative and obsessive-compulsive episode.

I give this three stars: one, out of Marvel loyalty; the second, for the actress playing Joy Meacham, who at least performs like she's a professional and not in some am-dram production; and the third for Rosario Dawson, who lifts the episode out of the muck (well it's still in the muck - just not as deep), and who can convey more feeling, depth, and insight in an instant's single raised eyebrow than most of the cast can in 45 minutes.

Trite

Warning: Spoilers
One of the later episodes in the first season and it's the worst yet. Trite dialogues and performances that are lacklustre across the board. Rosario Dawson is the only good thing in this and she barely appears.

First of all , I've never read anything about Iron Fist...meaning comics, previous films ( if any) , etc so everything was new to me. I don't understand how it got 8.1 rating...maybe a whole town invested in the project , maybe the actors and producers have huge families, or both. Anyway , everything about the series is stupid from the story, the fights, and specially the stereotypes. If the story should have taken place 500 years ago , OK, axes and knives could be used ...but hey!!! in present times , gangs...even Chinese, use guns!!!! Our hero , has no acting skills at all....mix of the last bachelor and Steven Seagal....(although both have more expressions even while sleeping)....and the way he 'recharges' his Ki ( Chi)....just doing 2 minutes of 'sort-of' Tai-chi movements is ridiculous. I said to myself, OK, first episode was crappy but I don't know the story and let's give it a chance, but boy....what a waste of time! Even if it was written for kids...which I strongly doubt, it's above stupidity. Again , I don't understand how it got more than a 2 -stars- rating. I 'm an open person , able to watch almost everything from Hell's kitchen , Crashing, The affair to Discovery Channel ...but this is garbage...nothing worth to mention
