They tried harder than usual at Digital Playground for the werewolf saga "The Hunted" and it shows. Director Francois Clousot, whose work I've been reviewing recently, mixes solid storytelling with hot sex for a winning combination.

Inspired casting has Katsuni/Katsumi as the leader of an ancient werewolf sect currently operating in L.A., with the twist that they are the good werewolves, contrasted with evil renegade ones. Useful moral shading in place of the genre's usual black hats vs. white hats has an out-of-control vigilante werewolf hunter Tommy Gunn seeking revenge for his wife's disappearance due to werewolves, putting him at odds with the authorities, headed by cops Michael Vegas and Barrett Blade. Blade, as usual, underwhelmed me with his reluctance to create a character (he always looks the same, in this case not fitting the role at all) and poor acting such as one scene where he pronounces a simple word "themselves" as "themselfs".

The sex scenes are well-integrated into the police procedural action. The elements of werewolf lore are well-thought-out, with new wrinkles added to the clichés. Bad guy is Xander Corvus, convincing as a renegade werewolf causing heaps of trouble, especially since his indiscriminate feeding habits on local L.A. denizens is putting the werewolves under the spotlight, when in fact they painstakingly keep to the shadows and avoid scrutiny by the authorities.

Miko Lee, a vastly underrated Adult performer, is perfectly matched with Katsuni in the werewolf cult, and turns out to be a key plot ploy in later reels. An action scene with kung fu film overtones for the film's climax has fine stunts and is better than many such a staging in mainstream albeit B-movies (usually a porn crossover film like this one fails miserably in these non-sex set pieces).
