Apple TV+ has announced the premiere date for first installment of its upcoming animated adventure trilogy WondLa, hailing from Skydance Animation and based on the New York Times bestselling book series The Search for WondLa by Tony Diterlizzi.
Showrun and executive produced by Bobs Gannaway, the seven-episode first season of WondLa will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 28.
WondLa centers around Eva, voiced by Jeanine Mason, a curious, enthusiastic and spirited teenager being raised in a state-of-the-art underground bunker by Muthr, a robot caretaker, voiced by Emmy Award nominee Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives).
On her 16th birthday, an attack on Eva’s bunker forces her onto the Earth’s surface which is now inhabited by aliens, covered with other-worldly fauna, and no other humans to be found. In fact, it’s no longer called Earth but Orbona.

In case you’ve forgotten (I certainly did), Disney has been developing a Space Mountain movie based on the popular theme park attraction. It’s been a while since we last heard about the project, but THR reports that the studio has tapped Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec to pen the script.
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are best known for writing Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but from what I understand, the Space Mountain ride doesn’t really have any memorable scenes or characters like those found in Pirates of the Caribbean, so the project could really go in any direction.
Related The CW picks up the Transylvania pilot
The Space Mountain movie was first announced close to four years ago, with Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi) set to write and produce.

Actress Megan Fox poses for Un/Dn Laqr nail polish, with colors inspired by her favorite gemstones including emeralds, sapphires and rubies:

Coming off his big Prime Video debut in Lulu Wang’s Expats, Brian Tee is joining the cast of the streamer’s action series Reacher for Season 3 as a series regular. Production is currently underway in Toronto.
Tee will portray Quinn who is described as a physically imposing and intimidating character. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army whom Reacher (Alan RItchson) investigated ten years ago when he sold military secrets to hostile nations.
Additionally, Johnny Berchtold and Roberto Montesinos have joined the cast as series regulars with Daniel David Stewart set to recur.
Berchtold plays Richard Beck, a sensitive and artistic college student who lost his mother when he was young and is the only son of businessman Zachary Beck (Anthony Michael Hall). Five years ago, he was the victim of a traumatic kidnapping that left him mutilated.

The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.
Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: season 3 of "Clone High" and "Jellystone!")
Animation fans (and fans of good movies regardless of style) have been thrust into an emotional tornado spinning as wildly as the Tasmanian Devil regarding the release of director Dave Green ("Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows") and writer Samy Burch's ("May December") live-action/animated hybrid Looney Tunes courtroom flick, "Coyote vs. Acme." What should be an absolute no-brainer hit at the box office is at risk of being scrapped for a tax write-off despite positive test screenings, the result of yet another frustrating corporate decision prioritizing capitalism over creativity, and an all-out attack on the art of filmmaking.
Of course, you realize, this means war.

There’s a very specific emotion I felt while watching Expats, Lulu Wang’s drama series about American expatriates in Hong Kong: frustration.
There was also admiration, of course, and enjoyment and suspense, but at some point, while watching the performances of Sarayu Blue and Brian Tee, the indignation set in: We could have been seeing them do this kind of work this whole time?
It’s a reaction that uniquely arises when you finally witness the full potential of someone whose face (if not name) has been a familiar presence on screens for quite a while, but almost always in a supporting role where they are serving the story — just not their story. These artists tend to disproportionately hail from historically excluded backgrounds, often cast to make an ensemble diverse but usually relegated to bridesmaid and never the bride. It’s quite common these days for people to head to a plastic surgeon to have some or all of the major and minor blemishes removed, or in the majority of cases, enhance their looks through enhancement surgeries. Thus, it shouldn’t be surprising to know that actresses such as Megan Fox are some of the many stars in Hollywood who have changed the way they look over the years artificially.
Megan Fox in a still from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Several people have noticed how despite looking amazing during her early 20s, her facial features kept changing drastically and unevenly over the years to the present day, where she looks nothing like how she did back in the day. Thus, professional plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Linkov reveals what are the various enhancements that the actress had performed on her to achieve the looks she’s so well-known for today.

Grief takes many forms. It gets inside your bones and could change you after siphoning your energy and reducing you to a shadow of your former self. As the CIA characters overseeing the office monitors might say, “My god, it’s Jason Bourne!” TheWrap has learned that Universal has begun early development for what would be a sixth movie in the so-called Jason Bourne universe. Edward Berger, whose Netflix-distributed re-adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front” received nine Oscar nominations and won four, is in talks to possibly helm the next chapter.
There is no screenplay, nor has Matt Damon officially been approached, but the actor who starred in four of the five previous installments certainly has first right of refusal. Damon starred in “The Bourne Identity” in 2002, launching the ongoing spy franchise and reprising in three sequels. Jeremy Renner took over in “The Bourne Legacy,” a spin-off chapter released in 2012.
The Doug Liman-directed smash earned rave reviews and strong word-of-mouth in the summer of 2002, grossing $214 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. It also...

“Coyote vs. Acme,” a live-action movie that stars John Cena, Will Forte and Lana Condor, has been shelved by Warner Bros. a year after it was completed.
This follows Warner Bros. similarly shelving nearly completed features “Batgirl” and “Scoob’s Haunted Holiday.”
“With the re-launch of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in June, the studio has shifted its global strategy to focus on theatrical releases. Another Warner Bros. movie bites the dust.
The studio no longer plans to release “Coyote vs. Acme,” a live action-animation hybrid starring John Cena, which completed filming in 2022. A similar situation transpired a little over a year ago as Warner Bros. shocked the entertainment industry by shelving the $90 million-budgeted DC adventure “Batgirl” and the kid-friendly “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” as tax write-offs.
Those films, as well as the $30 million “Coyote vs. Acme,” were greenlit by the former regime, led by Jason Kilar and intended for release on HBO Max. His successor, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, has shifted the studio’s priorities back to theatrical and felt this movie didn’t fit with the new creative direction of the company. The decision also comes after Bill Damaschke took over Warner Animation Group earlier this year.

The “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” phenomenon helped the U.K. and Ireland box office reach £104.8 million ($132 million) in August, per numbers from Comscore.
While this is significantly lower than the heights of £160.7 million in July, it is 67% higher than August 2022 (£62.9 million). Year-to-date, 2023 is currently running 10% ahead of the same period in 2022, a vast improvement from the low of -9% in early July.
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” remained the top film for the second consecutive month with £31.3 million, topping the chart every weekend in August and now has a total of £90.9 million. It is now the seventh-biggest film of all time, 2% above “Avengers: Endgame” (£88.7 million) and 3% behind Avatar (£94 million). It has also overtaken “Mamma Mia!” (£68.9 million) to become the highest-grossing comedy of all time in the territory. In Ireland, “Barbie” has surpassed the “Titanic” gross of €9.2 million($9.9 million) to be the country’s top-grossing film with €9.4 million.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” remained the No.

If audiences are tired of reboots and sequels, that hasn’t stopped them from flocking to see the latest “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. Even as anticipated tentpoles like “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” have failed to break even at the box office, Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” managed to recoup half its $70 million budget five days after its release.
The animated movie’s success isn’t totally surprising given its comparatively small budget and stacked cast. But given that the last film featuring this IP, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” reportedly lost Paramount around $75 million back in 2016, one can’t help but feel the studio took a risk by betting on “Ninja Turtles” again in 2023.
So is “Mutant Mayhem” succeeding because it’s part of an IP that’s nearly 40 years old, or in spite of it?...

Shark sequel Meg 2: The Trench is the first major challenger to the Barbenheimer supremacy, opening in 544 cinemas at the UK-Ireland box office this weekend.
Meg 2 will look to challenge both its Warner Bros stablemate Barbie, and Universal’s Oppenheimer, while benefitting from the surge in audiences those titles have brought in the past fortnight.
The first title, 2018’s The Meg, started with £3.7m also in early August; and ended on a sharp £15.9m.

Cowabunga, dudes! With a new Turtle-tastic adventure in our midst with "Mutant Mayhem," it's time to walk down memory lane and see how the surprisingly extensive "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cinematic canon stacks up. Read on, for our totally tubular and definitive ranking may surprise even the most ardent "Tmnt" fans.
Created in 1984 by comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Turtles have become a staple in pop culture and one of the most enduring media franchises across films, television, toys, and video games. They've inspired rap songs, Halloween costumes, and even thousands of dollars in collectors' auctions. It's hard not to be charmed by the hilarious banter from leader Leonardo, tech-wiz Donatello, cool-but-crude Raphael, and party dude Michelangelo, but how has such a confounding concept endured this long?
Well, no matter how malleable the characters are, the series always remains a story about family, brotherhood, and good triumphing over evil.

One night, two struggling cartoonists had what turned out to be a billion-dollar idea. What if Frank Miller’s Daredevil had human-sized turtles in it? From that question came the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a quartet of brothers named after Renaissance artists who fought the Shredder and his Foot Clan (a spoof of perpetual Daredevil baddies the Hand). Who could have guessed that the self-published comic Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created would launch a phenomenon, one that survived its first boom in the late ‘80s and crash in the mid-1990s? It has since gone on to become an enduring pop culture franchise which is still going strong after several decades. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael have leaped out of the sewers and into every type of media, including video games and toys. Nonetheless, the characters are never more exciting than when they hit the big screen.

The summer movie season isn't over yet, and we've got some heroes in a half-shell coming our way to try and make a splash late in the game. Paramount Pictures is gearing up to release "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" next week, giving the animated take on Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's beloved comic book creations a mid-week release to get a jump on the competition. That competition, in this case, is "Meg 2: The Trench," an R-rated shark flick seemingly going for a very different crowd. The question is, can this "Tmnt" reboot do for the turtles what "Into the Spider-Verse" did for Spider-Man?
Box Office Pro currently has director Jeff Rowe's "Mutant Mayhem" taking in anywhere between $27 and $36 million over the weekend, with a take of $37 to $49 million in the cards for the five-day, Wednesday to Sunday stretch. Meanwhile, "Meg 2" is eyeing a similar $26 to $35 million take.

Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are developing a sequel to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and planning a two-season series that will serve as a “bridge” between the films. The spinoff series, titled “Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” will appear on Paramount+.
It’s a sign of how bullish the studio is feeling about “Mutant Mayhem,” an animated adventure that opens theatrically on August 2. Paramount and Nickelodeon chief Brian Robbins has made rebooting the Turtles a top priority after the live-action film franchise ran out of steam with 2016’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.”
The sequel will be produced by Point Grey Pictures and directed by Jeff Rowe, who is also the director and co-writer of “Mutant Mayhem.” Point Grey Pictures is also producing the Paramount+ series. Watch the trailer for “The Help”:
Also streaming on June 1 is the hit dystopian thriller “The Hunger Games,” turned into a four-film franchise, starring Jennifer Lawrence. Paramount will open Nickelodeon’s “Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem” not on Friday, August 6 but on Wednesday, August 4. It’ll still go head-to-head with Jason Statham and Wu Jing’s “The Meg 2: The Trench” opening that Friday. Moreover, it still won’t get any Imax or Plf screens even for those first two days since those auditoriums will be going to Chris Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” or (if circumstances justify it) Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” or Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion.” However, it’s the latest big theatrical release to opt for an extended Wed-Sun weekend instead of a conventional Fri-Sun debut.
Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” decided to open two days early and ended up with a $146 million Fri-Sun frame and a $204 million Wed-Sun debut. Does that mean the film might have nabbed the first $200 million animated opening weekend had it opted for a conventional Fri-Sun frame? Perhaps, since...

Exclusive: Broadway casting director Duncan Stewart, whose big-name clients include the Tony-winning Hadestown, the new Life of Pi and the acclaimed The Great Comet of 1812, is dissolving his Stewart/Whitley agency after 14 years to head up the new casting arm of global live event company Rws Entertainment Group.
Rws’ new casting division will be called Arc, and will mine talent for theater, film, television and commercial projects. With the establishment of Arc, Rws’ old casting division, Binder Casting, will, like Stewart/Whitley, dissolve.

About nine months ago, we heard that Michael Bay and Brad Fuller are reviving their production company Platinum Dunes at Universal – and now Deadline reports that one of the movies we’ll be getting from the revived Platinum Dunes is the supernatural horror film Lure, with Corin Hardy (The Nun) directing. Chris Bernier (Halloween Ends) is currently writing the screenplay.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, we do know that Lure is based on the haunting of the real-life King’s Tavern, considered to be the most haunted building in all of Mississippi, with one of its tenants being the murdered mistress of one of the tavern’s original owners.
I hadn’t heard of King’s Tavern before this announcement, but Wikipedia informs that the place is one of the oldest buildings in Natchez, Mississippi, as it was first build in 1769. It’s also considered to be...

Casey Jones has appeared alongside his friends the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in many adaptations of the comic-book series, but the vigilante has never received his own movie. But if Jason Eisener had his way, we’d be watching that Casey Jones movie right now.
Jason Eisener is best known as the director of Hobo with a Shotgun and the recent Kids. vs Aliens, and he took to Twitter to show off a tone reel for a potential Casey Jones movie he pitched to Paramount Pictures five years ago.
“Five years ago I pitched a Casey Jones standalone film to Paramount with Shredders daughter Karai as the heel,” Jason Eisener wrote on Twitter. “The final act saw Casey team up with Raphael who was too look like he stepped out of the 1990 film.” A tone reel typically uses footage from other films to establish tone and atmosphere, and Eisener’s...

Ann Dowd will star in “The Undertaker’s Children.” The thriller is currently in pre-production. The Exchange will introduce the title to buyers at the upcoming 2022 Cannes Film Market.
Dowd stars as a secretive undertaker forced to take in two orphans. When her sinister plan for getting rid of the kids in her care is revealed, the children plan a daring escape and find themselves facing evil forces.
Dowd is no stranger to ratcheting up the tension. She is perhaps best known for her role as Aunt Lydia on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” in which she is a stern enforcer of dystopian discipline. For her performance, Dowd won a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series in 2017. Exclusive: Misha Osherovich, who starred alongside Vince Vaughan in Freaky, has co-created a drama series about the troubled-teen industry.
Osherovich co-created and co-wrote Troubled with screenwriter Skylar Landsee, who has worked on The Americans and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
The series explores the problematic troubled-teen reform industry, which was in the headlines again last year after Paris Hilton revealed her own struggles.
It is based on Osherovich’s experiences and survival story in the underground world of tough-love programs for rebellious youth. The darkly comedic drama series will expose the corrupt multimillion-dollar industry that has gone unnoticed and unchecked for decades and highlights the hopeful bonds these teens forge in the worst of circumstances.
The troubled-teen industry is a network of private youth programs, therapeutic boarding schools, residential treatment centers, religious academies, wilderness programs and drug-rehabilitation centers, often run by private companies, nonprofits or faith-based groups,...
