The 4:30 Movie is the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith – and while he was making the movie, he thought he was making something that would get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.
Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given Nc-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal.

Mind Body Spirit may be the first horror film centred around yoga. No, not yoghurt, The Stuff did that decades ago, but yoga. Yes, there was Yoga Hosers, but that was about two yoga practitioners, not about yoga itself. And it was a comedy, which this very definitely isn’t.
Anya was left a house in California by the grandmother she barely knew existed, let alone met. If she’d read a few of my reviews, she would have known what a bad idea that was, though after seeing a video call between her and her mother Lenka (Anna Knigge) I can’t blame her for moving cross-country to become a yoga and fitness influencer, something her childhood friend Kenzi has been very successful at.

Johnny Depp has had an illustrious career over the years with many successful films and iconic roles. His collaboration with Tim Burton has churned out some of his most well-known works, including Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise remains Johnny Depp’s most popular role
He has become synonymous with the character Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. His daughter Lily-Rose Depp is also becoming a promising young actress in her own right with her acting career. However, one film in which they both starred, turned out to be a total disaster critically and commercially.

A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

"Tusk" was a theatrical experience that I will never forget. The trailer did not give much away, and it was difficult to tell whether Kevin Smith was aiming for parody or serious horror. Was this really about someone being held captive by a seaman with an affinity for walruses? The idea for "Tusk" began with a SModcast episode where Smith and his friend/producer Scott Mosier poked fun at a classified advertisement made by a homeowner who offered free lodging to someone if they dressed as a walrus for two hours a day. The strange, real-life story inspired a brainstorming session about how they might bring the story to life on film.
"I could have easily just been like, 'Oh, that was a stupid stoner idea that I won't follow through on,' but, I don't know, there seemed to be a lot of nobility in taking a stoner idea...

HBO's new series "The Idol" follows Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, a pop star getting ready to stage her comeback. If that sounds too basic, don't worry. The series follows Jocelyn as she gets wrapped up in a cult run by Tedros Tedros, played by The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye. Jocelyn's story has some real-life analogs, though the fictional pop star isn't based on any one specific singer. And as viewers get to hear Jocelyn's music for the first time, they might wonder if that's really Depp singing in the show. In fact, fans of the series may be curious about other cast members' onscreen vocals, as well.
Is Lily-Rose Depp Singing in "The Idol"?
Yes, Depp is providing Jocelyn's singing voice - and she was really nervous about it.
For her audition, Depp had to sing a cappella. She sang a minute of the song "Fever." "I thought, Here's where I don't get called back,...

“The Idol” creators The Weeknd, Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim have assembled a diverse cast of young and upcoming talent like Lily-Rose Depp, singers such as Troye Sivan and Ramsey, as well as trans actors and models for their boundary-pushing series which has had more than its share of scandals even before it debuted.
Here’s who plays who in the HBO series.

“When was the last truly f*cking nasty, nasty, bad pop girl?” This is the question posed in the teaser trailer to HBO’s The Idol, which promises the kind of lurid, adrenaline-pumping pop-culture exposé you’d see if Paul Verhoeven was ever allowed to make a film like Showgirls again. Said trailer also features copious quantities of cocaine, champagne and seriously dirty dancing, suggesting a warts-and-all drama about a super-ambitious Madonna/Lady Gaga type who has recently hit the big time in the dog-eat-dog world of showbiz.
That, in itself, would be a risky role for any young actress, especially since The Idol has already been in the news for its turbulent production, overseen by director Sam Levinson, whose envelope-pushing series Euphoria was labelled “pointlessly gratuitous” by the hardly conservative Esquire magazine. Hats off, then, to Lily-Rose Depp — daughter of Johnny and French pop singer Vanessa Paradis, and goddaughter...

Almost eight years after the project was first announced, production is finally set to begin on The Witch (watch it Here) writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch that Here). Cameras are expected to start rolling on location in Europe next month, and with the first day of filming drawing near Deadline has broken the news that Emma Corrin – who is best known for playing Princess Diana in the Netflix series The Crown – has joined the cast of Nosferatu. The internet has been freaking out over Austin Butler’s recent Oscar nomination. His astounding performance in the 2022 biographical drama Elvis has been turning heads worldwide. Butler and his acting career have definitely come a very long way. Looking back on his experiences, the star revealed that while working on one particular TV show he would “go home and cry.”
Austin Butler is known for many TV shows and movies
Butler, a California native, was born in August 1991. As the story goes, he was walking around at the Orange County Fair when he was approached as an acting management representative. This ultimately led Butler to take acting classes and begin his journey as an actor.
His debut role came in 2005. Nickelodeon fans probably remember him as Zippy Brewster in Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide. A few years later, in 2007 the young actor was featured in iCarly, another Nickelodeon favorite.

Kevin Smith has directed eight feature films since 2006's "Clerks II" — including "Clerks III," it so happens — but "Clerks II" might function best as the coda to his body of work. In the film, Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randall (Jeff Anderson), now in their early 40s, have been reduced to working at a low-price fast food joint called Mooby's to make ends meet. Dante is poised to marry his fiancée Emma (Jennifer Schwalbach) and move to Florida to run a car wash. This has Dante facing an existential crisis, as he is actually in love with his manager Becky (Rosario Dawson), with whom he had an affair. Randall, too, is thrown into an existential crisis by the impending absence of his best friend. The future doesn't look bright. The decisions these characters make in "Clerks II" will essentially come to define their adulthoods, and they are still, in many ways,...

Regardless of what you might think of his movies, his worldview, or anything else, filmmaker Kevin Smith remains a genuine maverick in the industry. His first movie, Clerks, was made for 27,000 with local actors in and around the south New Jersey environs of his youth, which inspired the movie. And it remains a genuine milestone of independent filmmaking. It helped pave the way for more DIY filmmakers to emerge outside the confines of the studio systems, with its improvised, lo-fi aesthetic being seen today in movies filmed on iPhones.
In the nearly 30 years since Clerks was released, Smith has continued to write and direct his own features while also occasionally working as a director-for-hire on larger studio projects. The core movies of his canon, known as the View Askewniverse and featuring Jason Mewes and Smith himself as anchor characters Jay and Silent Bob, predated the Marvel Cinematic Universe by more than a decade.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. That may be the overriding theme of Clerks III, the third, and perhaps final, entry in writer-director Kevin Smith’s Quick Stop convenience story trilogy that has been the anchor for nearly his entire canon of films.
While certain life-shaking events have taken place in the 16 years since Smith made Clerks II—events which we won’t reveal here—the new movie gets the most mileage out of familiar situations and characters in the orbit of the Quick Stop, the fictional New Jersey store based on Smith’s own early work history at a convenience store before he became a filmmaker.
Yet while the film retains much of the often coarse, crude humor of many of Smith’s earlier View Askewniverse movies, and while his filmmaking style still usually hinges on long, static shots of people just standing around and talking,...

Like an ouroboros that has tired of sucking his own tail and moved on to another body part, Kevin Smith’s Clerks III is about as pure an exercise in self-referential self-gratification as you get on a movie screen, and if your understandable response is, “who the hell asked for this,” well, you’re just not paying attention.
More entrepreneur and raconteur than filmmaker (an assessment he might agree with), Smith knows he has enough loyal followers to justify multiple returns to nearly every well he has dug, at least those related to his “View Askewniverse.” But while some of his many spinoffs and sequels have smelled of near-desperation and little more, this one’s also personal: Inspired by the heart attack that nearly killed him in 2018, it’s a story about valuing those you love and trying to keep living until you’re dead.

The 2014 horror film Tusk (watch it Here) was meant to be the first installment in what writer/director Kevin Smith was calling his “True North Trilogy”, to be followed by Yoga Hosers – which did get made – and the killer moose movie Moose Jaws – which we’re still waiting for. But in late 2020, Smith said he had an idea for a Tusk 2 as well… and according to Tusk star Justin Long, it sounds like he’s ready to start pushing the sequel idea toward production.
Speaking with Slash Film, Long said,
You’ll be happy to hear, Kevin just announ– I mean, I guess they’re talking about it. They’re doing Tusk 2, I think. … He texted us all the other day, Haley [Joel Osment] and Genesis [Rodriguez], and he told us that he wanted to do it, and I thought it was a joke. And then I realized he was being serious.

Time for a first look at the upcoming Elvis movie! Director Baz Luhrmann tweeted out a very short teaser video with barely 15 seconds of footage of the new Elvis Presley movie he's working on. It was supposed to open this year, but they delayed it due to the pandemic and now it's scheduled for release in June 2022 next summer. "Made a little something to let you good people know we are taking care of business on June 24, 2022," he tweeted. Harley Quinn Smith stars on Freeform's latest series Cruel Summer, and chances are, you've probably seen her in one of her dad Kevin Smith's films before. Walking viewers through one of the most unlikely careers in recent movie history, Clerk finds one of Kevin Smith’s longtime collaborators interviewing practically everyone in the writer/director/podcaster/raconteur/etc’s orbit. It’s a beat-by-beat chronology in which even shameful entries on the filmography (Cop Out, Yoga Hosers) get at least a mention, and where others are remembered perhaps too fondly. Listening to one of Smith’s speaking engagements would be a much more entertaining way for a fan to spend 115 minutes, and non-fans or fence-sitters will likely find this piece too puffy to be very useful. But few will deny that ...

Kevin Smith has a pile of unmade projects he’s been talking about for the last several years. One of those is Moose Jaws, a horror-comedy that was supposed to close-out his True North Trilogy, which started with Tusk and continued with Yoga Hosers. Kevin Smith sold his first movie, “Clerks,” to Harvey Weinstein out of the Sundance Film Festival in 1994.
Weinstein, who ran Miramax at the time, shelled out $227,000 for the black-and-white movie set in a video store. But their agreement allowed for Smith to receive a backend if the movie became profitable.
That fall, “Clerks” grossed $3.2 million in North American theaters. And it generated tens of millions more on VHS, as it became a cult hit.
Now, in a recent interview with Variety, Smith reveals that it took Weinstein seven years to pay him back some of the royalties that he was owed. And even then, Weinstein deployed sketchy accounting tactics, like billing “Clerks” for the costs associated with renting a yacht for “Pulp Fiction” at the Cannes Film Festival.
Weinstein, who is serving 23 years in prison after being convicted in February of a criminal sex act and rape, could not be reached for comment,...

In today’s film news roundup, Tom Holland-Daisy Ridley’s “Chaos Walking” will open next year, Sophia Lillis and Charlie Plummer have landed roles, and Lily-Rose Depp has joined Christmas film “Silent Night.”
Release Date
Lionsgate has set its long-delayed science-fiction movie “Chaos Walking,” starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, for a Jan. 22, 2021, opening.
“Chaos Walking” was originally set to launch on March 1, 2019, but reshoots forced Lionsgate to push back the opening. Doug Liman directed the film, based on Patrick Ness’ “Chaos Walking: The Knife of Never Letting Go,” a book that was published in 2008 as the first in a trilogy set in a dystopian world where all living creatures can hear each other’s thoughts.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Joe Drake told analysts Thursday that he was bullish on the project. “We’ve two of our biggest stars on the planet today leading,” Drake added.

So, we have reached the final hurled on this Road to Reboot. We began with Clerks, made our way through Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma, took a turn at Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back last time, and we’ll end it here, with Clerks 2. Of course, Kevin Smith did other movies, films like Zack & Miri Make a Porno, which I’m a fan of, and movies unlike his other work, such as the poorly received Jersey Girl, the oddball horror Tusk, and the, in my opinion, bloody terrible Yoga Hosers [Am I the only Nerdly team member who loved Yoga Hosers then? - Editor Phil]. As we approach the release of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, it seems fitting to end this journey where it began, with Dante and Randall, who likely weren’t meant to be here today.

Onward we march along the View Askewniverse of Kevin Smith’s films on this Road to Reboot. We’ve reviewed Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy so far, so the next stop is Dogma.
I remember renting Dogma on VHS back in 1999 and loving everything about it. The story of two fallen angels who were sent to Wisconsin after being tossed out of Heaven have found a loophole that gets them back to the pearly gates, a loophole that exists in a church in New Jersey. It would, sadly, destroy humanity and be the undoing of the fabric of our universe, though, so it’s up to a ragtag crew to stop them, including the last scion, the 13th Apostle and two prophets.
A religious comedy with an awesome cast, featuring the likes of Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee and, of course, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith,...

Last week, Kevin Smith released Jay and Silent Bob Reboot as a two night special through Fathom Events. The movie is a lot of fun and very much in the wheelhouse of Smith fans. To celebrate that release, as well as the upcoming further unveiling of the film through a Roadshow style release, complete with Smith Q&a’s after, I’m going to be updating my list of the filmmaker’s best work to date. This flick is another quality effort of his, though really just meant for the fans, as well as Smith himself. Still, if you get a chance to check it out, it’s well worth your time… The film is, obviously, a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, while being a bit of a rebook/remake as well. In fact, it’s also a satire of how Hollywood reboots all intellectual property these days.

You already know if you want to see a movie called “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot,” but in the unlikely event that anyone out there is still on the fence about buying a ticket for this Charlie Kaufman-esque belly flop back into the depths of the View Askewniverse, it might help to know that Kevin Smith’s latest bit of self-mythologizing starts with a proud nod to “Clerks II.”
The scene begins with the feds surrounding a New Jersey chicken shack called “Cock Smokers,” and ends with Jay (Jason Mewes’ perma-stoned alter-ego) rehashing an old bit that involves him tucking his penis between his legs in tribute to the serial killer from “The Silence of the Lambs.” Yes, “Goodbye Horses” plays on the soundtrack. It’s a callback to a sight gag from a sequel that was already dependent on viewers’ familiarity with a different movie the first time around,...

Kevin Smith spoke to me in my late-teens, making films that echoed my sentiments while also delivering characters and plots that were relatable, hanging out with slackers, losers, down-and-outs, degenerates or nerds in places that ranged from convenience stores to video stores to shopping malls to comic book shops. My memories of his films are deep, but I’ve always had a tough time deciding which one I’d choose as my favourite.
Now, I’m not going to discuss Cop Out, Red State, Tusk, Yoga Hosers, Jersey Girls or even (and I like this one) Zack and Miri Make a Porno here. I’m gonna stick to his View Askew titles that began in 1994 with Clerks and ended (until the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot lands later this year) with Clerks 2 in 2006. 12 years of movies that had the same tone, the same dialogue, some of the same characters and many of the same jokes,...

If we’re being honest, Kevin Smith hasn’t exactly had a home run for a while. The well-known director – who rose to prominence in the ’90s with hits such as Dogma, Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back – hasn’t seen much success from his past few projects. 2016’s Yoga Hosers, for instance, was universally panned by critics and audiences alike – it couldn’t even break the $40,000 threshold at the box office.
While Smith has perhaps stayed in the spotlight as more of a pop culture icon than a filmmaker, it seems like he’s looking to turn things around. Later this year, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (which is shaping up to be rather raunchy) will hit theaters, and as ComicBook.com reports, he has an entirely new project in the works for the small screen, too.

When asked to describe the newly-unveiled Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Kevin Smith summed it up perfectly: “it’s a movie which makes fun of sequels and remakes and reboots while being all three at the same time.” Where do we sign up?
Hot off this morning’s decidedly Nsfw trailer and we have official confirmation that the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot features not one, not two, but three Batmen Batmans. You can count Ben Affleck among that exclusive club, though Kevin Smith refused to divulge further details of those other two Caped Crusaders.
Chances are the writer-director-star has made room in his ranks for Diedrich Bader, who voiced Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, while Kevin Conroy seems like another safe bet, given he previously worked with Kevin Smith on Yoga Hosers. And let’s face it: barring some unforeseen twist, we can effectively rule out Robert Pattinson,...

Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes’ iconic indie stoners Jay and Silent Bob are officially back in the debut trailer for this fall’s “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.” The characters made their debut nearly 25 hours ago in Smith’s breakout 1994 indie “Clerks” and recurred in other Smith films like “Mallrats” and “Chasing Amy.” Smith wrote and directed a standalone movie for the characters called “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” that opened in 2001. Jay and Silent Bob last appeared in “Yoga Hosers.”
“Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” follows the title characters as they discover Hollywood is attempting to remake an old movie based on their lives. Jay and Silent Bob head out on a cross-country trip to stop the movie from being made and predictably get into an onslaught of shenanigans. Joining Smith and Mewes on screen are Rosario Dawson, Justin Long, Shannon Elizabeth, Craig Robinson, and many more.

Kevin Smith knows some people think his movies “went to shit” over the last decade. The writer-director was one of the success stories of the 1990s American indie film boom thanks to his debut “Clerks” and follow-up efforts “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” and “Dogma.” As of late, Smith has been more of a critical punching bag than a pioneering indie filmmaker. The director’s last release, “Yoga Hosers,” was widely panned by critics and bombed at the box office. And yet, Smith refuses to look at the glass half empty.
“People tell me the quality of my flicks went to shit when I got married and had a kid,” Smith recently told his critics on social media. “If so, it was a fair trade: whatever ailed me as a piss-&-vinegar 20-something was gone, replaced by joy and contentment. Great art comes from pain — so maybe happy people don’t make great art.

Independent cinema is at its best when it can launch a new star. Whether in front of or behind the camera, making a discovery is a highlight of the medium. In the case of the indie drama All These Small Moments, it serves to showcase a tremendous supporting turn by young Harley Quinn Smith. There’s a lot to like about this film, as it’s one of the few 2019 releases of really high quality, but Smith stands out. She hinted at this talent in her father Kevin Smith’s underrated Yoga Hosers, but this really hammers it home. She’s someone to watch out for. The movie is an indie drama, centered on a young man’s coming of age. For Howie (Brendan Meyer), his entry into adulthood is taking place as his parents (Brian D’Arcy James and Molly Ringwald) are seeing their marriage crumble. Every single day,...

Kevin Smith has launched pre-production on his long-promised “Jay and Silent Bob” reboot with Jay Mewes and producer Jordan Monsanto.
Smith, who first announced the project in August, 2017, made the announcement in Jan. 1 tweet: “Spent the first day of 2019 having a #JayAndSilentBobReboot pre-pre-production meeting.”
Smith and Mewes made their film debut in the 1994 comedy “Clerks,” funded for $27,000 through Smith maxing out his credit cards. Smith wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in “Clerks,” portraying the character Silent Bob as part of the team of Jay and Silent Bob.
Smith’s subsequent films featured Jay and Silent Bob and were mostly set in his home state of New Jersey. Those included “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and 2006’s “Clerks 2” — the final film in which the characters appeared. Smith produced the interconnected films through his View Askew Productions, which he co-founded with Scott Mosier.

Earlier this month, writer, director, and podcaster Kevin Smith made the bold claim that Avengers: Infinity War is the best movie ever made, so long as he’s smoking two joints while watching it. Now, when it comes to the highly anticipated Avengers 4, the filmmaker may have even topped this hyperbole.

Beginning on a shot of the Paris cityscape–yes, the Eiffel Tower plainly in view and everything that surrounds it–Louis Garrel’s A Faithful Man self-awarely announces itself in the tradition of decades of French cinema; say the kind that the average movie-goer assumes every single film from the country is like. With long conversations, wistful romances, and a deadly earnest piano score, one won’t be unable to see of influence of Garrel’s father on the picture. Yet if not as recognizably personal and hear-ached as those magnificent pictures, the son still shows heavy promise in his second feature.

Six months after surviving a heart attack, Kevin Smith appears rejuvenated. The writer/director/actor appeared at San Diego Comic-Con last week to once again share his thoughts on the state of the film industry, and today he took to Instagram to tease a “huge” project that he hasn’t discussed yet.

No other details are known at this time, though the filmmaker added that “fingers crossed, we’ll all get to watch it next year” if things proceed as planned.

San Diego Comic-Con fixture Kevin Smith spent the first half of his improvised, 90-minute Hall H talk giving a beat-by-beat account of the heart attack he suffered in February. “I didn’t die, but I was real fucking close,” said the 47-year-old filmmaker, who also used his stage time to promote fundraising for his Rivit TV series, “Hollyweed,” and to energize fans about “Jay & Silent Bob Reboot” (shooting this November).
