L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz and its sequels have been adapted for the screen for nearly as long as there has been cinema. There's something about the tale of farmgirl Dorothy Gale being swept into the strange, magical, and sometimes scary land of Oz that has stuck in American popular consciousness and never let go.
Emerald City is the latest addition to the long on-screen Oz tradition, but, for all of the ways it draws from its obvious source material, it's strengths and weakness are defined by other pop...

If last year was Peak TV, then 2017 may go down as Peak-ier TV: The Rise of Even More TV. In January alone, NBC launches a pricey Wizard of Oz fanfic, HBO appoints a sexy new Pope and glamor (or at least very drunk celebrities) returns with the Golden Globe Awards telecast. There's plenty more to break you out of that post-holiday funk – here's what you'll be watching over the next month. (Check out our Best TV and Movies to Stream list tomorrow.)

NBC’s certainly not in Kansas anymore. Starting early next year, TV audiences everywhere will get to see a new take on the classic L. Frank Baum story with Emerald City. Given the Game of Thrones treatment, these new clips promise a decidedly fresh and far more mature take on the fable.
The first video focuses on Adria Arjona, who’ll play Dorothy in this new version, as well as Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who’ll play a version-of-sorts of the Scarecrow called Lucas, and Joely Richardson, who’ll play Glinda. It certainly teases something grand and expensive, but are fans really going to eat up a darker, moodier, sexier version of The Wizard of Oz? That remains to be seen, but NBC is, at the very least, confident that audiences at home will go down this weathered Yellow Brick Road.

Mere minutes into NBC’s broadcast of The Wiz Live! you could feel the Internet – or at least its nicer corners – breathe a huge sigh of relief. The network’s previous attempts at creating a classic for a new generation with The Sound of Music Live! and Peter Pan Live! resulted mostly in deflated fodder for live-tweeters hoping to get their fifteen minutes. Against all odds, The Wiz Live! managed to shake the Hate-Watch label and put on a legitimately entertaining show. Thanks to solid casting, spotless performances, and a strong choice of source material, NBC finally found a way to make appointment television satisfying for families and musical theatre fans alike.
Based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wiz eased on to the Broadway stage in 1975 as a soulful retelling that featured an all-black cast and a score with roots in pop and R&B.

Apparently, the Yellow Brick Road begins somewhere inside a gritty HBO crime anthology.

Nope it's not Kansas. It ain't Oz either. Instead it's La's trendy Echo Park neighborhood that plays home for this brand new music video for the band Maxie Dean's hit song Tornado. The world premiere of this stylized vid comes to us courtesy of director Todd Berger who you may know as member of the comedy troupe The Vacationeers and director of the 2013 apocalyptic laugher It's A Disaster. Here's what Mr. Berger had to say about his inspiration: We all know that L Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz was a satire of the 1890's Us economy with the Yellow Brick Road representing the reliance on the gold standard, The Scarecrow representing the plight of the American farmer, the Tin Man representing the...

If the Annabelle doll can get a The Conjuring spin-off, what other movie objects are primed for future stardom, ponders James?
Move your mind back through the mists of time to summer 2013 and you may recall the moment that The Conjuring manifested itself in movie theatres. James Wan's film fictionalisation of an astoundingly creepy case handled by American paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) was a huge critical and commercial hit. In fact, earning over $300 million off the back of a budget estimated around $20 million, it's one of the highest-grossing horror flicks of all time.
Naturally, a sequel was ordered and that's due to surface and scare us all over again just before Halloween 2015. Before that, though, audiences itching for more of this particular world (and threatening other worlds) have something novel to enjoy while they wait for the return of the Warrens.

It's difficult to think of a film that has inspired more urban legends than Victor Fleming's 1939 children's classic The Wizard of Oz. Depending on who you believe, Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon syncs perfectly with the action (not true), the production was cursed with a series of horrendous accidents (true), and the Munchkins were all shag-happy party animals (also untrue, but a favourite talk show gag of star Judy Garland). Perhaps the tall tales have something to do with the hellish shoot, which involved five directors and at least 15 writers, or maybe it's because The Wizard of Oz is watched by a lot of stoned people.
What many don't seem to realise is that The Wizard Of Oz is itself a remake. L Frank Baum's original 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (the first in a series of more than a dozen books) was filmed...
