This short film opens with scene of a panicked mother hiding her two sons in the wardrobe just before two men come in looking for their money. They beat her around a bit but a bad fall sees her killed, leaving the boys orphans in the house after the act of violence. Twenty years later and a homeless man enters the same, unlocked, house looking for anything he can use or sell – however there is more in that house than history.
I watched this out of curiosity since I had added it to this site and, no offence, figured I may be one of a limited number of people to watch it. The subtitle of "Epilogue" suggests that it is a project made standalone but alluding to being part of a bigger film – it doesn't feel like it is trying to make that film, but more that it was taken as a part of a story to be a project in and of itself. This feeling is added to by the director being a first-timer. As a narrative this gives it some benefits but also some problems. The 'part' of a story aspect takes the pressure off giving us a lot of information and answers, giving the film more space to simply allude and deliver on the ideas rather than the whole. The downside of this is of course the same – that we get a very simple scene with very simple roots and nothing in between.
This leaves the style of delivery and mostly this is good. In terms of cinematography I'm sure I do not need to say I really know nothing, but I will say the film is not the most attractive – it has a washed out look that seems more a case of necessity than design. The actual style is good though, I like the camera movement and the tense feel the whole thing had, with music used pretty well throughout. The performances were pretty decent; not sure why specifically but Gardner stood out for me.
