It’s clear that writer/ director Joe Martin’s Us and Them could be interpreted as a manifestation of Brexit/ Trump diffidence and economic inequality, donned in the garb of a home invasion thriller. Sadly though, Martin mishandles the drama and analogies in this slipshod big screen cine-manifesto that’s neither edifying, terrifying or entertaining.
The surface story is straightforward: a wealthy family become the target of subjugated Brit delinquents who invade their home and use the attack to make a political statement, while robbing the place blind in the process. The script breaks this down into chapters while transcending time and just about hits its beats to evade brain raking tedium. The production/ execution is passé and inept, smacking more of Michael Winner on a bad day than the films it tries to emulate, but Us and Them’s politics are very contemporary.

Broader range of local hits over the summer helped drive China box office to $6.79bn from Jan-Aug.
China’s box office grew by 17% to reach $6.79bn in the first eight months of 2018, following a summer in which Hollywood titles may have been sidelined, but local productions started to show greater depth and diversity.
According to figures from Chinese consulting firm EntGroup, local films grossed a combined $4.5bn (RMB30.42bn) during January-August 2018, an increase of 46% over the same period in 2017. This gave local films a market share of 66%, compared to 53% for the first eight months of last year (using current exchange rates). Based on these figures,...

“Us and Them” is the perfect love story of passion for teenagers, but also for adults. I must admit that the romantic genre is not one I usually pay attention, but if the film is good, I don’t care about the genre or where it comes from. In this case, we are talking about a Chinese film directed by Rene Liu and starring mainly Jing Boran and Zhou Dongyu.
“Us and Them” is available to watch already in some countries on Netflix”
The story starts on an airplane. Jianqing meets Xiaoxiao during a plane trip, a woman he is familiar with . The two look at each other from a distance and that’s when the memories of the past come to life. The story takes us back 10 years before this event, when these two young people met, during a long train trip. From there on, a very special friendship emerges between the two teenagers.

What this month’s new selection of movies available on Netflix lacks in overall size, it more than makes up for with a depth of choices, including both buzzy new titles and a number of options from some of Hollywood’s best directors. The biggest new addition is Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which will roll out on the platform on June 26. Other big titles include Martin Scorsese’s infinitely rewatchable “The Departed,” Taika Waititi’s dead funny “Thor: Ragnarok,” Martin McDonagh’s heist comedy “In Bruges,” and Lynn Shelton’s dreamy drama “Outside In.”
Another option to look out for: While fans of Terry Gilliam might not yet have the chance to see his long-gestating “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” his also troubled production of “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” will be available this month.
Netflix will also premiere a number of its own original films this month,...

Of half a handful of new release movies in China this weekend, only Chinese romantic fantasy “How Long Will I Love U” and American horror thriller “A Quiet Place” made any noise behind still dominant “Avengers: Infinity War.”
“Infinity War” held on to the top spot with $54.2 million in its second weekend, according to data from Ent Group. That marks a 72% drop from its opening weekend, but it lifts the film’s total to $302 million after just 10 days on release. That makes it by far the top Hollywood movie of the year so far in China, having overtaken the $220 million mark of “Ready Player One.”
“How Long Will I Love U” which features a man and a woman living in the same apartment 20 years apart, who find their timelines crossed, earned a serious $36.2 million for second place. With the film’s scores improving each day of the weekend, including an impressive $17.3 million on Sunday,...

Netflix has picked up multi-territory rights to “Us and Them” a Chinese romance that is currently topping the China box office.
The film is the directorial debut of Taiwanese actress Rene Liu. It features male heartthrob Jing Boran and rising female star Zhou Dongyu in a story of strangers who meet on a train as they head home for the holidays.
Appropriately enough, “Us and Them” was released in time for the May Day holiday. It has now earned $191 million after nine days on release.
That box office total has been disputed as the distributor-producer Maoyan has been accused of selling deeply discounted tickets and inflating its success. The producers of another film “Screaming Live” are now reported to be suing Maoyan for unfair competition, alleging that their film was unable to secure enough screens, due to Maoyan’s tactics. The fervor of the previous May Day holiday quickly died down at the Chinese box office. That left holdover titles “Us and Them” and “A or B” alone at the top of the charts.
Romantic drama, “Us and Them,” directed by Taiwanese actress Rene Liu, earned $25.8 million on its second weekend of release. That lifted its 9-day cumulative score to $191 million.
Behind it, crime drama “A or B” detected a further $11.1 million in its second weekend. Its total after 9 days grew to $48.0 million.
“Rampage” remained the top Hollywood title for another weekend. It added $7.82 million for a cumulative of $150 million after 24 days in theaters. It narrowly exceeded the score for India’s “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion,” which was the top-ranked new release of the week.
The South Indian action film played out on 9,500 screens, including some 500 IMAX venues, and was the third placed film on Friday. But it drifted to fourth on Saturday and Sunday.

38% year-on-year takings boosted by Rene Liu’s romance Us And Them.

Romantic drama, “Us and Them” dominated the Chinese box office over the weekend ahead of the May Day week holiday. But questions surround the scale of its victory.
Unusually, most new films opened on Saturday instead of the more typical Friday. That reflected the extended working week ahead of one of the most important holiday period of the year in China. At least six new films were released, and over three days the top ten included 17 different titles.

Update, writethru: New Line/Warner Bros’ Rampage continued to dominate overseas play this weekend, adding $57M in 61 markets to push the international box office to $216.4M. The global tally on the Dwayne Johnson-starrer is now $283M. In China, Rampage crossed the $100M threshold and held No. 1 as it did in many key markets, easing only slightly in some of the smaller hubs. It still has France, Germany and Japan up its sleeve in May.
Rampage‘s week-on-week drop was 50% during a frame that saw summer weather largely blanket Western Europe, meaning moviehouses will have seen less traffic across the region. Overall, there were no major new wide releases as the world awaits Avengers: Infinity War which starts offshore rollout on Wednesday. Films like this make me glad I don’t need to give a star rating. Because films like Blade Runner 2049 – and there aren’t many of them – take time to absorb, to fully comprehend. It’s a most unlikely mega-budget blockbuster: slow and long and extravagantly cerebral; the absolute antidote to YouTube instant reaction culture. Give me another 35 years and I might have finally made up my mind.
Where the 2019-set Blade Runner was a hardboiled noir in future-gothic clothing, Blade Runner 2049, its direct sequel, is an exacting detective procedural sketched on a desolate canvas.

Joe Martin’s Us And Them is less a dangerous class-warfare battle and more a steamy soapbox rant. It’s positioned as “a deadly game of chance,” but don’t expect some Saw-like torture chamber. Anti-establishment angst fuels a fire that rages in the name of social responsibility, through tirades that attack fat-cat bankers who “don’t understand” a working man’s struggle. You can see where Martin draws influence from Guy Ritchie (narrative choices) and Michael Haneke’s Funny Games, yet Us And Them‘s bark is worse than its bite. This is a human story about people who look for answers in all the wrong places, and the chaos that ensues. Blowhard, ill-conceived chaos that goes up or down in flames, depending on your personal outlook.

For his feature film debut, UK director Joe Martin brazenly takes on the class divide of Britain in Us and Them, his crime thriller that follows a frustrated young man named Danny, played by Jack Roth, who takes out his anger on the wealthy and elite members of society by kidnapping a well-to-do family, which doesn’t go exactly as he planned.
While at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead took a deep dive into the political and economical focus of Us and Them with both Martin and Roth, resulting in a fascinating discussion on the problems that have caused a great division both in the UK and the world at large.
Fantastic job on the film, guys. It has a lot to say and you put a lot of energy into some really serious issues we can all relate to.

The most that any of us can hope for is just surviving. Isn’t it time we started living? Us and Them squarely takes on economic pressures that are building in the UK (and frankly, issues that are affecting nearly every other country on the map these days), as Danny (Jack Roth), a member of the lower class who recently lost his father to suicide, decides to take his frustrations out on a wealthy banker and his family to inspire others in his predicament to start fighting back against the elite. But when his plan goes south, that’s when all hell breaks loose, and we see just how much of a motivator money can be, especially when it comes to murder.
Us and Them begins with Phillipa (Sophie Colquhoun) taking her boyfriend, Glen (Paul Westwood), home to meet her affluent parents. On their travels to the family estate, the...
