So Bad it Should be a Cult Movie
averyb-2290018 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
There is honestly sooo much to talk about this movie.

To give a little backstory, this "movie" is adapted from a YouTube series. The YouTube series is one of many shows apart of the "Mermaid Show" community. It was very popular and many people, including 10 year old me, watched it.

The parents of the girls who made this show have connections with the movie business, so naturally they got to have a movie made about their show. But I am not sure if this movie is apart of the show, or just kinda there. The process of making this movie was a mess. I remember the release date being pushed back like two years.

So to get started on reviewing the actual movie, keep in mind that this movie is barley an hour long, but yet it drags sooooo much.

The movie opens up with an advertisement for the girls' tail costume company (which is funny since they don't even use their own product in the film). A lot of this movie is filled with very long underwater scenic shots, I'm guessing they added so many to reach their hour runtime. Also the camera work in this movie is very shaky, and honestly they could've filmed with an iPhone and it would've looked better.

There are two characters in this movie that aren't supposed to be related, but they're twins in real life. One of the twins bleached her hair to make her "look different". I hate to break it to you, but changing your hair does not make you look any different from your IDENTICAL twin.

Plot Line #1 involves a character named Faith. Faith was in the original YouTube series, so I guess they quickly wanted to work her into this movie. They mention that she's an "evil mermaid who's hundred years old" (the exposition on that was very poor). They mention her once like she's going to be related to the plot...but she's never actually brought up again until the very end of the movie (I will talk about that later). She also isn't portrayed like an all powerful mermaid, just a snotty popular girl.

Plot Line #2 involves the brunette twin and this potential love interest that is never seen again (like a lot of things in this movie).

Plot Line #3 involves them getting scales (which is obviously craft glitter) on their bodies. Which, is very strange and it never happens again. So what's the point in mentioning it?

Plot Line #4 involves brunette twin's stereotypical Spanish maid finding some "magical" blue craft glitter outside their house. They seem to make a big deal about it, such a big deal that it's never mentioned again. I guess this and the blue craft scales are trying to beat us over the head with the fact that they're mermaids and they're "weird" or whatever, BUT YOU CAN'T DO THAT IF THOSE PLOT LINES AREN'T GOING TO GO ANYWHERE! These things don't provide a threat or anything, it just poorly tries to "expand" the "mythology".

Plot Line #5 in this movie is the scientists. Believe it or not, this plot line actually goes somewhere (doesn't mean it isn't poorly executed). It's kind of unfortunate that this is the plot line the movie decided to go with, because I personally think Faith being an 100 year old evil ghost mermaid would've been better, but whatever. Anyway, they kidnap the girls and throw them on this house boat. They turn the blonde twin (or maybe the brunette one idk they're basically the same character) into a mermaid and get green goop out of her. The blonde twin jumps off the house boat and swims to get help.

Plot Line #6 ties into the scientist plot line. Basically this one guy has this disabled daughter who wants to be a mermaid and so that's why he arranged the kidnapping of three teenage girls. When the three girls eventually meet him, he gives them a "sorry" and everything is perfectly okay. Soooo.....the girls get kidnapped but it's perfectly fine since he did it for his daughter?? It does not make his actions perfectly okay! The police came but they told them not to arrest him!

I guess I should also mention plot line #7, which is basically a crappy, beat-you-over-the-head PSA about keeping the oceans clean. Sometimes the movie will stop just to beat you over the head with it. It also has the popular douche bags saying they don't care about the ocean while the really good sweet people care.

Oh yeah remember Faith? Well the end of the movie shows her trying to become a mermaid. How did she get the green mermaid goop? Isn't she already a mermaid? Why did the movie all of a sudden forget her backstory?

When it comes down to it, this movie managed to screw so many things up in it's hour runtime. The acting is bland, the PSA is very pushed, there are many plot lines that don't go anywhere, and the characters are all poorly written.

This movie is so bad that I didn't even mention everything wrong with it. You honestly need to see it for yourself for how terrible it is.

Bad Acting and camera angles.
peacev25 May 2018
The actors have very little reactions/ emotions, the cameras are shaky and have very awkward closeups and the plot is stereotypical as well as all over the place. This movie looks like it was shot for a college project.

The only reason this movie has gotten 2 stars is simply because of its entertainment qualities! This had no plot whatsoever, atrocious acting, and unrealistic and unbelievable costumes! In the H2O series the tails were hand-made and painstakingly crafted. These tails were probably bought off of ebay. The budget for this movie must have been literally 100 dollars! I wouldn't watxh again for anything but laughing at it.

The "Birdemic" of the ocean

It's as if three different people wrote a script for this "movie" and instead of choosing one, plot points from all three were placed in a hat and drawn at random.

It is painful and nonsensical at every turn.

Hands down the worst movie I ever seen lol
vtabar-5670911 October 2018
The acting was terrible. It made me cringe. It was extremely confusing. Like one of their classmates appear in class and they're like "omg I thought you were dead" and the classmate treats them like badly. Like what does that have to do with anything??! But that acting though...how in the world did this home video get on Netflix?!!!

They can not act at all.
kirbyluv9 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I did not enjoy the movie. They can not act at all. I consider this a comedy because they can't act. Don't watch this movie. I understand that sometimes mermaid movies can be a bit weird and cheesy, but this was plan lame. Maybe if you were in kindergarten you would enjoy this better. My 3rd grader hated the move. Even the father could not even act. I love mermaid things. I just think they are cute, but this is not.

An uninspiring plea to stop using plastic
rodejong24 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
When you have seen the Mako/H2O series, you will find this movie very weak indeed. The plot has two themes. First there is the pollution of the Ocean. We get to learn a bit about it, but then the movie takes another direction. The three mermaids get kidnapped and the kidnappers draw some Mermaid-sample which is delivered to a man who has a daughter who can not walk. He wants her to become a mermaid. One of the girls escapes and warns the police. When the police comes, the girl who kidnapped them was arrested, but the scientist who gave the order is not, as the mermaids feel sorry for the paralyzed girl who needs her father. The movie ends with a plea to stop using plastic.

The acting is bad. Everything feels like it was made up by kids who wanted to surprise their parents and read the whole thing aloud from paper. The theme about plastic never gets through to me. It feels like an annoying side product, which is a shame, as I believe that the message is important.

Terrible
ed_mrg13 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't choose to watch this movie, rather that my daughter happened upon this on Netflix, and while the movie is really trying to send a message of environmental responsibility, the acting is downright horrible. I have seen better actors in community theater. Unfortunately, the writing does not help the actors in the acting department either.

This movie was awful to say the least. "I thought she was dead" what????? And why is everyone so dramatic??? They have scales growing on them and they don't go to the dr????? The movie sounds like it was filmed with an Android.

Lame
simplykaylene4 March 2017
I could tell within the first 10 seconds that this was basically a "home movie," but it was even less entertaining. I thought the H2O series was bad, this knockoff is even more excruciating. The only reason this made it from YouTube to "movie" is because they have parents in the business.

Do not let your kid get sucked in because it mentions mermaids.

The greatest movie I've ever seen
antoniastiening20 June 2021
I watched it with my friend today and I'm proudly admitting that I cried my eyes out. The acting was the best I've ever seen, I loved every single one of the actors , especially the background characters. The plot was amazing and so moving. I understood everything! But the best part we're the messages. I mean don't pollute the ocean! So amazing and original. And how it was used? Incredible. But I do have one complaint. This actress that played the Lady in the Aquarium. She sucked. I can't even bother to remember her name. She didn't own the character at all and made this amazing script so unfunny. These were the only completely not forced jokes that I didn't like. So I can't give it a 10/10 but without her I absolutely would. I loved it !!!!!!!!!11!!!!eleven!!!

One of my favorite group watches
isaacdransy16 November 2020
Everything about this movie is incompetent, the writing, directing, pacing, and it has a rushed ending. They set up a lot of information that doesnt fall through at the end, and they dont bother establishing whether the girls know theyre mermaids for the first 30 minutes.

That being said, if you can get a group of friends together, youll all have a great time watching this

it was so bad we loved it
dancingflower18 December 2017
I watched with my ten year old daughter. we were in disbelief that the acting is so bad. we found ourselves repeating their lines in their monotone, expressionless delivery. obviously these girls have rich parents who made them a movie and im glad they did! we are watching it again because we wanted to laugh. the two plots is weird but is secondary to the girls, who, even though they need more practice, they are sweet.
