What makes us different from one another

Warning: Spoilers
(Screened as part of the myFrenchFilmFestival.com that is underway only on screens - the TV link does not work for most of the features and the shorts, no matter what anyone else might tell you).

We lash out at most things we don't understand, and are afraid of. All of us. It is curious that universal perceptions of maturity or tolerance are all subjective as well, which makes us embrace our own preferences over the one alongside us, and try to evangelize, most of the time trying to force our stuff down strangers throats to, give the opportunity and a listening ear.

So, many movies have been made on the subject of homosexuality, and the resulting homophobia. However, the execution of said material also have been found wanting (mostly), since the helmers are almost always tempted to try and make their points in a none-too- subtle manner.

In this work of art, however, while we do have a clichéd narrative of what typically happens, in terms of a logical yet typical sequence of events that unfold after the eldest sibling in a family of 3 returns home after living away for a few years. He has changed, but seems to fit in more easily than the environment that has missed him (?) all the time that he was away, especially his family.

What's normal, for that neighborhood, for that milieu is challenged by his acclimation into that society, and one of the main protagonists, who is not taking into confidence on perhaps one of the more important aspects of said change, lashes out as only we humans can, hurting quite a few people in the process - a call to attention, as it were.

Now, though the narrative is laden with said clichés, that it is better not to dwell on, the light it shines on this (for lack of a better word right now in my head) aspect, concludes with a decent level of kindness and understanding, and even perhaps generosity, that alleviates the pain inherent in most of its other frames.

A great watch, if you're in like-minded company.

a gem

The basic virtue is the impecable construction of story. Not the theme, not the performances- good in profound sense- but the delicate exploration of brotherhood, discover of the truth, deep frustration and the clash to eliberate the angry. A film about heroes and the naked truth about them. So, just a gem.
