Francis Lawrence's 2007 post-apocalyptic drama "I Am Legend" is based loosely on the celebrated 1954 novel by Richard Matheson. The original novel is set in the near future of 1976 when a destructive war has ravaged the Earth, and a horrible virus has infected the survivors. The virus transforms its victims into pale-skinned, nocturnal ghouls with an appetite for human blood, more or less making them vampires. The novel follows Robert Neville, seemingly the last human alive, as he tries to survive in a ravaged Los Angeles and study the virus during the daylight hours. The title comes from the novel's famous twist ending.
"I Am Legend" was adapted to film in 1964 as "The Last Man on Earth," and in 1971 as "The Omega Man," before Lawrence's 2007 version. Lawrence's version transposes the action to New York and makes Neville (Will Smith) into a surviving virologist attempting to come up with a cure for the vampire virus.

When it comes to costume changes in horror movies, the term is a little more elastic than merely an actor obtaining a different wardrobe. A "costume" in a horror movie might refer to full-body latex or an animatronic suit to completely transform an actor's physicality. It could mean a character goes from being an actor in an outfit to a CG creation. Or it may address the fact that, in adapting non-filmic source material, changes had to be made for the camera, or were made by editorial decision.
Whether it be between installments of a franchise, or from original to remake, or from costume to special effect and vice versa, audiences do not embrace every change. And in some cases, even if most people like a change, purists remain unconvinced. Horror movies, novels, and comics leave indelible images in our minds, so when a newer version "re-skins" them, so to speak,...

Warner Bros. and producer Akiva Goldsman‘s company Weed Road are working on a sequel to director Francis Lawrence’s 2007 Richard Matheson adaptation I Am Legend (watch it Here), which will see Will Smith reprising the role of Dr. Robert Neville, now joined in the cast by an unspecified character played by Michael B. Jordan. Lawrence has said he would “love to” return to the direct the sequel… which is made possible because there were two different endings filmed for I Am Legend. The version of I Am Legend that reached theatres ended with Neville sacrificing himself (using a grenade to blow up himself and the attacking “Darkseeker” creatures) to protect other characters. But that ending was actually a reshoot. The original ending was more low-key, with Neville making peace with the Darkseekers after realizing that he was the monster in the eyes of these creatures. That alternate ending was...

This doggy adult comedy is unrelentingly gag-filled, foul-mouthed – and coming to a cinema near you. Its director talks about striving for a four-legged Stand By Me vibe, and how he adopted one of his star performers
Strays may be a film about talking dogs but it boasts an obscenely stacked cast. There’s Will Ferrell, revisiting the sweet naivety of his Elf era. There’s Jamie Foxx, having more fun than he’s visibly had in a decade. Will Forte gets to be more obnoxious than he’s been since The Last Man on Earth. Jamie Demetriou pops up briefly. Sofía Vergara plays a settee. It’s all very impressive.
At any other point in time, you would probably be reading an interview with one of these people. However, the ongoing Sag-Aftra strike means actors are not currently promoting their work, and so it is that I enter a Zoom call with Josh Greenbaum,...

While you may not know the work of Richard Matheson by name, I guarantee you know the work and the artist from somewhere. “Clone High,” the animated MTV cult classic about a high school devoted to teenage clones of historical figures from creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the “Spider-Verse” franchise) and Bill Lawrence (“Ted Lasso”), returns with new episodes on Max 20 years after the cancellation of its sole season. The core group has thawed to confront a more complicated world of social media and new cultural norms, where “Riverdale” has replaced “Dawson’s Creek” as the coming-of-age template, complete with slightly more adult humor and even sillier situations — and fewer executive notes since the creators now wield greater power.
Back are Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), Cleopatra (Mitra Jouhari replacing Christa Miller), JFK (Chris Miller), and Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan). They are joined by new clone classmates Harriet Tubman (Ayo Edebiri), Frida Kahlo (Vicci Martinez), Confucius (Kelvin Yu), Topher Bus (Neil Casey as a canceled Christopher Columbus), and Sacagawea (Jana Schmieding). Rob Zombie and Waxwork Records have joined forces to release an exclusive, curated line of classic horror movie soundtracks.
The series, called Rob Zombie Presents, will offer several never-before-released film soundtracks that Zombie personally selected.
“I have always been a huge fan of movie soundtracks, so I jumped at the opportunity to work with Waxwork on this project,” Zombie said in a statement. “I can’t wait to release these albums. So many of these films are greatly under-appreciated and they all contain such great music. So to be able to release these deluxe packages is a dream come true.”
The first soundtrack to be released is fittingly the one for White Zombie. The 1932 film starring Bela Lugosi is considered the first-ever zombie movie, and inspired the name for Rob Zombie’s former band, White Zombie. According to a release, the film was “slammed by critics upon its release” but...

When looked at from the outside, the premises of the first two "Bill & Ted" movies are baffling. In the first film, the title characters (Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves) are a pair of slacker California dudes who are more interested in their band than in studying high school history. Randomly, a visitor from the future (George Carlin) appears in a high-tech, time-traveling phone booth and announces to Bill and Ted that their band will not only become successful, but that their music will become so profound as to unite humanity and usher in a new utopia. In order to form their band, however, they will have to pass an upcoming history exam and stay in school. The Carlin character gives them the phone booth, and they travel through time, viewing history in person through their particular slacker lens. In the sequel, Bill and Ted die and traverse the afterlife...

January Jones took aim at virtual auditions on Saturday, writing on her Instagram story, “Note to Hollywood: It’s time for casting directors to come back into the office like everyone else. To audition actors in person.”
The “Mad Men” star continued, “And if anyone asks for a Fee to audition please know that this is criminal and Pathetic. I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes.”
Since the pandemic, self-tapes have remained a common way for actors to audition for roles, rather than auditioning live in front of casting directors.

The upcoming “I Am Legend” sequel will be based on the alternate ending of the first film, in which Will Smith’s character lives, producer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman told Deadline this week.
In the theatrical version released in 2007, Dr. Robert Neville (Smith) sacrifices himself, but ensures the survival of the human race against the tide of bloodthirsty mutants. The alternative coda, in which Neville lives, was filmed and released on a special 2008 DVD.
Both Smith and Michael B. Jordan’s casting was announced last year, but how Smith’s character could return was left up in the air until now.

Akiva Goldsman’s production company Weed Road recently had film and TV deals at MGM, but now that MGM executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy have moved over to Warner Bros., intending to give the studio’s theatrical franchise output a boost, Weed Road has followed them. Deadline reports that Weed Road has signed a multi-year first look deal with Warner Bros… and since Goldsman has already done a lot of work for the studio over the decades, he sees this deal as a bit of a homecoming. With Weed Road now calling Warner Bros. home, the top priority for the companies are a pair of projects they were already working on together: sequels to the 2005 comic book adaptation Constantine (which Goldsman produced) and the 2007 Richard Matheson adaptation I Am Legend (which Goldsman produced and co-wrote).

Mo McRae’s face may be more recognizable than his name. As an actor for more than 20 years with over 60 credits and counting he’s worked steadily, appearing on TV and in film in such roles as Benjamin Berry in “The Flight Attendant,” Blip Sanders on the short-lived “Pitch,” and Gus Henderson in “Den of Thieves.” Now he’s moved behind the camera as the co-writer and director of “A Lot of Nothing,” his feature film debut.
Officially, the film is about an uber-successful Black married couple whose perfect lives are knocked off kilter when they learn via the evening news that their cop neighbor, who is white, has killed a kid. In a time where the police killings of Tyre Nichols in Memphis and George Floyd in Minneapolis are front of mind, they assume that the victim is Black and decide to get answers. And that’s when everything goes wrong.

"Infinity Pool," Brandon Cronenberg's new gonzo horror film about the worst resort town imaginable, currently pushing the boundaries of what's considered good, acceptable taste. The film has drawn comparisons to other recent satires about the ultra-wealthy like "Triangle of Sadness," "The Menu," and the television series "The White Lotus," only this time it's like going on a nightmare vacation while having a bad psychedelic trip. Like these other examples, however, "Infinity Pool" is supposed to be at least partially comedic despite its disturbing material, according to Cronenberg.
"Infinity Pool" is a true descent into madness, following a couple that arrives at a relaxing seaside resort only to become entangled in a nightmarish scenario that leads them to grisly secrets lurking underneath the surface. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard ("The Northman"), Cleopatra Coleman ("The Last Man on Earth"), and, hot off her acclaimed scream queen performances in Ti West's horror double-header "X" and "Pearl,...

Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been two of my favorite creators for years. I was probably too young to be watching "Clone High" when it aired on MTV from 2002-2003, but best believe I was immediately transported back to seventh grade when it was announced the series would be soon getting a reboot for Paramount+. In the years that followed, Lord and Miller have had their hands on a number of projects I absolutely adore, as well as producing "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," which was undoubtedly my favorite film of 2021.
The duo has become go-to partners for animated features, but as some of the first people to work under the Sony Pictures Animation banner, it wasn't always smooth sailing. The Wrap recently published a look at the first 20 years of the company, which includes the rise of Lord and Miller. "The drywall was barely up," Lord joked about...

It is not yet Christmas 2022, and we already have a contender for “Weirdest TV Show of 2023.” Peacock just debuted the trailer for New Year’s Day release “Paul T. Goldman” — the series, like Paul T. Goldman himself, looks positively nuts. And we mean that in the very best way possible.

As he explains in a letter that accompanied the show’s announcement, Woliner has been working on this series for 10 years. Goldman tweeted at Woliner (and hundreds of others) in...

When "I Am Legend" was released in 2007, most people watching in crowded theaters probably never thought they'd see its awesome vistas of a deserted, windswept Manhattan in real life. Those images were chilling enough originally but take on an extra poignancy when revisited in a pandemic-era world, now that we've all gotten a glimpse of what an apocalypse might actually look like (albeit one without dodgy CGI mutants).
It's also strange watching a Will Smith movie after you-know-what at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. When it came out in 2007, "I Am Legend" was Smith at his most relatable, charismatic, and assured, carrying a blockbuster with a 150 million price tag almost single-handed with his sheer presence and star power. His journey to being taken seriously as an actor was an arduous and not always successful one, but the film marked the sweet spot in his transition. It's a big tentpole sci-fi movie with...

Oblivion was released as a Tom Cruise vehicle in 2013, giving him his second best box office weekend up to that time outside of the Mission: Impossible franchise. However, the sci-fi pseudo-epic also received middling reviews and almost immediately dropped out of the public consciousness altogether. Which makes its reemergence into it via Netflix this month intriguing.
Oblivion admittedly has its flaws, yet it is worth a second look if only because it so clearly has ambitions to be something so much more. In 2013 we had only recently gotten a glimpse at what the future held as the commercial effects of the first Avengers movie began to be felt. It was a year of two Marvel movies (three if you count The Wolverine), one Superman movie, and a slew of remakes, reboots, sequels and prequels, from The Hobbit, and The Hunger Games, to Star Trek: Into Darkness and G.I. Joe.

(Welcome to Year of the Vampire, a series examining the greatest, strangest, and sometimes overlooked vampire movies of all time in honor of "Nosferatu," which turns 100 this year.)
Vampires may be fundamentally incapable of self-reflection (seeing as how they don't show up in mirrors and all), but that doesn't mean we can't reflect on them. And so we have, all throughout 2022. The Year of the Vampire is almost over now, and these last 11 months have been an educational, blood-spattered ride through one of film history's oldest genres.
With the first 50 articles in this series, we spotlit individual vampire movies, beginning with F.W. Murnau's original "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror" and ending with Werner Herzog's 1979 remake "Nosferatu the Vampyre." However, if you've been following along at all, you might know we've jumped around in time since January and analyzed over two dozen 20th-century vampire films.
This list adds to that with 20 more titles,...

Digital effects can be an amazing resource for creating fantasy worlds and creatures, but like any tool, they can be misused. Early CGI in projects like "The Abyss," "Young Sherlock Holmes," and, of course, "Jurassic Park" blew people's minds, and studios that had previously relied on miniatures and stop-motion animation all of a sudden wanted their own computerized creations.
But making digital characters isn't that simple, and the results are often less than stunning. This is rarely the fault of the modelers, animators, or other professionals who work tirelessly to bring these creatures to life. Sometimes, the time and money just isn't there. Sometimes, puppets simply work better. Even if the CGI is well done, it can destroy the characters' charm and undermine what the movie was going for in the first place.
The misbegotten CGI effects that follow fall into all of those categories. Plenty of them are bad,...
