Hilarious Documentary
SLUGMagazineFilms20 January 2014
If I had a nickel for every documentary about an original musical from a community theater in Birmingham, Alabama, I'd have one nickel and one hilarious documentary. Skanks follows the production of Billy Ray Brewton's original musical, Skanks In A One Horse Town, from the first rehearsal to the opening night performance of the most successful show in Theatre Downtown's history. The controversial material within the musical is entertaining enough, but it's the characters behind the scenes and the amazing actors within the production that make this documentary a heart-felt, beautifully honest and connectable film. Chuck Duck and Flannery Hooks stand out most, though all of the actors and stage workers who appear in Skanks are dynamically unique. McMahon serves up a delicious film—complete with catchy-as-hell songs about three-ways, skanks and taking it up the ass—that shows what community theater is suppose to be about: Community.
