Worthington will again reprise the role in Avatar 3, which Disney has slated for release on December 19, 2025.
Also recently starring opposite Andrew Garfield in FX’s Under the Banner of Heaven, which was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Limited Series, Worthington’s other past film credits include Mel Gibson’s Oscar-nominated Hacksaw Ridge with Garfield, Brad Anderson’s Fractured, The Shack, Everest, Cake, The Debt, Clash of the Titans and Cate Shortland’s Somersault,...

“Sound of Freedom” is the biggest success story of the summer outside of “Barbenheimer,” with $182 million in box office for the child-trafficking thriller — but its director isn’t taking part in the spoils.
Alejandro Gómez Monteverde sold his back-end participation to get the film finished, which means the filmmaker didn’t get rich off the stunning theatrical success.
“Like any independent film, we ran out of money,” Monteverde told TheWrap. “I decided to sell my points to the producers so we could finish the picture.”
“I don’t even want to think about what those points might be worth,” he added.
The movie took a challenging path to the box office. Produced in 2018 by Sentient Entertainment (which also produced “Map to the Stars” and “Taken”), the picture ended up in limbo after initial distributor Fox Latin America was purchased by Disney. Hillary Swank rallies her entire town to help out a neighbor in the latest trailer for Lionsgate’s true-life faith-based drama “Ordinary Angels.”
The two-time Oscar winner plays a hairdresser who inserts herself into the life of a grieving widower with a critically ill daughter. The kid needs a new liver, and the dad just needs a little help. As revealed in the trailer, circumstances change when a new organ becomes available for transplant, but it requires a cross-country flight and happens to occur during a once-in-a-generation cold front.
Swank won two Best Actress Oscars, one in 2000 for “Boys Don’t Cry” and one in 2005 for “Million Dollar Baby.” Although she never really became a bankable draw, she has made a career out of mostly top-billed leading roles in films like “Amelia,” “The Core” and “The Gift.” Moreover, she almost never found herself just playing the love interest or the lone woman in a macho melodrama,...

March brings a fresh slate of new shows and films to Hulu. The rotation of the catalogue also makes room for well-loved films arriving on the streamer this month. As for new releases, Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon play hard-working journalists in the investigative thriller “Boston Strangler” (2023) from writer and director Matt Ruskin. Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Now that Avatar: The Way of Water is taking audiences back to Pandora, actor Sam Worthington returns to the spotlight as the Aussie actor took a back step to supporting roles after dealing with the struggles of fame and franchises after the critically panned Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans. He would take smaller parts in films that were lower budget and more critically driven, like The Shack and the series Under the Banner of Heaven.
Worthington is now set for multiple sequels for Avatar, and the actor sits with Variety to talk about his personal life after breaking through with the first film. He reveals in the interview that he was given the opportunity to try out for many roles. However, before Avatar, he tested for James Bond during the casting for Casino Royale. He would fly out to London to do a screen test in a tuxedo for Barbara Broccoli,...

I’m worried that Sam Worthington is going to tear his skin off. He has this tic. When he gets nervous, his right hand snakes under his black T-shirt and starts to gnaw at his shoulder. And what’s got him scratching so intensely is an easy question: Who are the actors you look up to?
“It’s too hard to answer these questions, mate,” Worthington says in his thick Aussie accent.
What’s interesting is that over the course of a two-hour conversation in a hole-in-the-wall New York City diner, Worthington is an open book about his blown opportunities and personal struggles, recounting them in detail. Just don’t ask him about things like his “process” (a very un-Worthington word), because that’s when he’ll start to scratch.
Thirteen years ago, Worthington seemed to win the acting lottery, securing the starring role as a military grunt-turned-leader of an alien race in “Avatar,...

While there are many new movies and shows coming to Netflix in December to look forward to, the streamer unfortunately has to cut some great films this month as well. Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” along with “A Little Princess” will be leaving this month, among many others.
Oscar-winner “Blue Jasmine” starring Cate Blanchette will also depart in December. The “Men in Black” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise films have a ticking clock as well, not to mention “A Cinderella Story” starring Hillary Duff, Chad Michael Murray and Jennifer Coolidge. Though Daniel Craig’s reprisal of Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion” arrives on Netflix on Dec. 23, one of Craig’s five James Bond films, “Casino Royale” will leave Netflix on Dec. 31.

It’s been a big year for Prime Video. From The Boys season 3 to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to even the terrible games presented on Thursday Night Football, there were many hits to satisfy Jeff Bezos’ bottom line. How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. This time around John Krasinki’s CIA analyst will be dealing with a potentially nuclear conflict with Russia. The only other original TV series of note this month is Three Pines on Dec. 2. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.
Over on the movie side of things, Prime Video is bringing forward a major holiday tile on Dec.

It’s time to get the hot cocoa boiling and the holiday decorations up! It’s almost December and nearly every streaming service has consumers covered with both seasonal content and new shows to carry them into the new year. Amazon’s Prime Video service has a few new series debuting, including “Riches.” Starring Deborah Ayorinde, from “Them,” the series is described as “a high-stakes family drama about the exploits of the stylish, privileged, and super-successful Richards siblings vying for control over the family business.”
The streamer also brings actor John Krasinski back into the world of Tom Clancy with the third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” This installment finds CIA officer Jack Ryan wrongly accused of treason and on the run from his own government as he races against the clock to stop a global catastrophe. The season hits December 21.

A new year has begun and audiences are looking for a fresh start. Only three films from last week's top 10 are making a return appearance, while everything else has been replaced. The adorable animated feature "Back to the Outback" has finally been ousted as the top watch for kids and replaced by the underrated "Rise of the Guardians." Audiences have finally kicked off my nemeses of the "Oldboy" remake and the weird Christian drama "The Shack" after a few weeks, but they've been replaced by perhaps even more questionable choices.

Sony Pictures not only sold 93 percent of movie theater tickets this weekend — with “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at $260 million leading the charge — but the studio is also #1 on all three VOD charts below with two different titles.
One is “Spider-Man: Far from Home” ($3.99), #1 at Google Play and second at iTunes. And “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” helped by a price reduction to $5.99, leads at iTunes and Vudu (the lower price started December 17; Google Play tends to lag a few days in reporting). And not only 2019’s “Far from Home” but also 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (also $3.99) made two charts. And Google Play, in a move that will confuse many, is accepting pre-buys for “No Way Home” for an unspecified date. Those presales rank the film at #6 on Google’s chart.

It was a thin week on the video on demand charts: only 13 different titles, a record low, placed on the three VOD lists we follow and track. And while holdover successes like “No Time to Die” (United Artists/$19.99) and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (Sony/$19.99) returned to their #1 positions, the real story this week is the ongoing success of three “holiday classics.”
Though each film has placed on the VOD charts in recent weeks, these three older family-oriented titles — including “The Grinch,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and “Elf” — are currently at their highest level of audience interest. “The Grinch” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Universal/both $3.99) both placed among the top six films at Apple TV/iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu. The year is somehow already almost over! To celebrate another passage around the sun, Netflix is putting its best foot forward with its list of new releases for December 2021.
Netflix’s options of original series are quite vast and impressive this month. The blockbusters continue apace from there with The Witcher season 2 premiering on Dec. 17, Emily in Paris season 2 on Dec. 22, and Cobra Kai season 4 on Dec. 31 to close out the year.

Netflix will close out the year by debuting its biggest awards contenders and popular series like Season 2 of “The Witcher” and Season 2 of “Emily in Paris.”
But the headline releases are on the film side. December 1 brings the streaming premiere of “The Power of the Dog,” Jane Campion’s Best Picture favorite starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. On December 10, Netflix drops “The Unforgivable,” a new drama with former Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock. On December 24, it’s Adam McKay’s star-studded Best Picture hopeful “Don’t Look Up,” with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Rob Morgan, Timothee Chalamet, Tyler Perry, Ariana Grande, and Mark Rylance. This year’s batch of Emmy nominated filmmakers for both documentary and nonfiction encompass a wide spectrum that include veterans who have greatly influenced the genre and younger creatives getting their first dose of wide exposure. In getting to talk with them, it was incredible to hear them not only talk about the works that influenced their decision to go into nonfiction storytelling, but also the nonfiction works that have stood out to them in more recent years. Gold Derby recently had these discussions with Kirby Dick (“Allen v. Farrow”), Amanda McBaine (“Boys State”), Steve James (“City So Real”), Tom Campbell (“RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked”) and Jeff Orlowski (“The Social Dilemma”) during our recent “Meet the Experts” panel.

After visiting over 30 countries over the span of half-a-decade, Tom Lowe’s non-narrative documentary Awaken is an awe-inspiring look at the bonds of nature and humanity. Executive produced by Terrence Malick and Godfrey Reggio–both of whom Lowe has collaborated with on various projects––the film is seemingly inspired by the spirit of Voyage of Time and Qatsi trilogy in its vision of the world.
I said in my review, “Shot in 4K over five years across 30 countries, Lowe orchestrates a non-narrative approach, letting the footage mostly speak for itself, accompanied by Joseph Trapanese’s bombastic orchestral score and sparsely doled-out, poetic voice-over from Liv Tyler. A visit to Dubai, where the film received its private funding for production, holds the most stunning imagery, as the camera floats ethereally above the sky as if created for a large-scale science-fiction film. Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

While much of Australia’s film and TV slate is currently being held up over insurance matters, production has now begun near Sydney on low budget feature “Dark Noise.” It is one of the first local films in Australia to start since the end of nationwide coronavirus lockdowns.
The film features the rising star of the British Shakespearean stage Imogen Sage (BBC TV’ “Doctors”) as a young woman foley artist alone in a forest listening for frogs. She hears something she shouldn’t have and stumbles upon a cocaine farm. Other cast includes features Callan Colley (“The Letdown”), Brett Rogers (“Rake”) and Australia’s Leah Vandenberg and Lauren Clair (“Packed To The Rafters,” “Underbelly”).

Anastasia Brown, a veteran music supervisor who has long been a key figure in connecting Nashville with Hollywood, has been appointed chief content strategist of Visionary Media Group. She’ll direct content across platforms for the company’s music, TV, film and scoring projects.
The move comes at a time when Nashville is making good on its longtime promise as a major hub for film and television music, as full-scale scoring stages open up to rival the spaces in Los Angeles — on top of the traditional studios that have always been plentiful in Music City — and even gaming projects look to Nashville for their soundtracks.
“Creatives move to Nashville because of our sense of community, level of talent and respect for their talents,” Brown tells Variety. “A multi-media company will financially benefit content creators, which will then allow them to thrive here for years to come. I have always cared...

Ron Fricke’s 1992 documentary celebrating the natural beauty of the world and its cultures makes full use of a little-used but glorious photographic process, 70 mm Todd-ao. That crystal clear format was used for 1956’s Around the World in 80 Days and Fricke takes that as a challenge, traveling to 24 countries on six continents to assemble this one-of-a-kind movie. A sequel was produced in 2011, Samsara, which explored many of Baraka’s same themes.

Trailers From Hell is featuring more movies you never heard of this week, so my wine selections should be easy pairings – more wines you never heard of. Wine aficionados and movie buffs say those are the best ones, anyway. Everybody likes to think they are a cult of one. In my younger days, music at my place was like “stump the band.” If you had ever heard it anywhere else, it wouldn’t find my turntable. My fondness for Bruce Springsteen’s music knew no limits in those years, but diminished with each of my friends who signed on as believers. Oh, I still liked him as a superstar, it just wasn’t the same with everyone else on board.

Apple TV + has unveiled the trailer for “Little America,” its upcoming anthology series. Each half-hour episode will focus on the true experiences of immigrants that were featured in Epic Magazine, with a focus on the “little” but profound stories that other Americans don’t typically have the opportunities to read about in the media.
“Little America” premieres on January 17, 2020 and Apple will release all of Season 1’s eight episodes at once.
The uplifting “Little America” trailer opens with a handful of immigrants sharing their favorite or surprise experiences about living in the United States — such as discovering baseball and bacon chili cheeseburgers — before teases of some of its specific storylines. One episode, “The Manager,” will follow a 12-year-old who must learn to run a Utah hotel when his parents are deported to India, while “The Jaguar” will focus on Marisol, an undocumented Mexican teenager who navigates the world of competitive squash.

Easter weekend usually signals an onslaught of religious movies, especially coming from the other side of the pond. While it’s easy to dismiss the majority of these films as too simplistic in their approach to faith, some in the past, see The Shack, have offered a little more gravitas than others. The same sadly can’t be said about Let There Be Light, a film so ingrained in blind-faith and conservatism that it could turn any God-fearing christian into a confirmed atheist.
Directed by and starring TV’s very own Hercules Kevin Sorbo, the film is co-produced by conservative Fox News anchor Sean Hannity and is written by Sorbo’s wife Sam Sorbo alongside veteran writer Dan Gordon, the man behind Hollywood classics such as Wyatt Earp and The Hurricane.

Macario San Sebastian Film Festival has announced it will host a retrospective of about 25 films dedicated to Mexican director Roberto Gavaldón at its 67th edition.
The Jiménez-born filmmaker worked his way up through the ranks of actor, extra and assistant director and scriptwriter before co-directing, making his debut as a solo director in 1945 with The Shack (La Barraca). He would go on to film Macario in 1960, which was selected for Cannes and became the first Mexican film to receive a nomination for the Best Foreign Language Oscar. Its success paved the way for him becoming one of Mexico's most important directors for the next two decades.

Commemorating an era of revisionist-revisionist Westerns (we’re now further away in time from the deconstructed ones than the ones that deconstructed them were from the originals), “The Kid” simultaneously wants to humanize and mythologize its cowboys — and neither effort works.
Yet another story about Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, this time presented from the viewpoint of an impressionable teenager witnessing the final days of their cat-and-mouse camaraderie, Vincent D’Onofrio’s film is a maudlin, violent affair that wants us both to admire and to understand the two Old West luminaries, but all it really does is remind us that famous people should seldom if ever be seen as role models.
Jake Schur plays Rio Cutler, a 14-year-old who intervenes in a fight between his mother, Mirabel, and father, Pete, and accidentally shoots him to death. Pete’s brother Grant (Chris Pratt) shows up full of grief and fury,...

Lionsgate earnings and operating income have topped Wall Street projections, thanks to growth from its premium cable channel, Starz.
The studio reported earnings of $22.9 million, or 10 cents a share, and adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization of $171.4 million for its third fiscal quarter that ended on Dec. 31. Analysts had been forecasting earnings of 9 cents a share and Oibda of $162 million.
Revenues were down 18% to $933.2 million, which fell short of Wall Street’s estimate of $1 billion. Starz ended the quarter with 25.1 million overall domestic subscribers, up 1.1 million subscribers from the prior-year quarter, and achieved strong over-the-top subscriber growth.
“We’re pleased to report a strong quarter with significant free cash flow, and continued revenue and subscriber growth at Starz,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. “As we refill our feature film and television pipelines at a robust pace and take our integration of Lionsgate and Starz to the next level, all...
