Canadian-Indian-American actor Sunny Leone is making her Cannes debut with Anurag Kashyap’s “Kennedy.”
Presumed dead for years, Kennedy (Rahul Bhat) is an insomniac former cop who continues to work for a corrupt system while seeking redemption. Leone plays a pivotal character named Charlie.
“She’s a little bit of a complex character and she hides behind some of her motions. And one of the things she hides behind the most is this laugh. And I believe she’s a woman who’s caught in two different worlds – one is the one that she wants to live in and one is the one she has been deliberately caught up in. I really enjoyed playing this character. And I think she is someone who’s trying her very best to be as strong as possible at every moment of the day,” Leone told Variety.

The film, which also stars Sunny Leone, will play in the Midnight Screenings strand of the festival. Several films directed by Kashyap have played at Cannes, including “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). In addition, several films produced by him have made it to the Croisette, including “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).
The plot of “Kennedy” is being kept under wraps at the moment. “Kennedy is a ghost in the system looking for redemption,” is how Kashyap describes the film to Variety.
The filmmaker says that the character of Kennedy has been an obsession with him for years and was born when fellow Indian filmmaker Sudhir Mishra hired him to write a cop story set in the 1980s. That film never got made but the character stayed with Kashyap.

“Jubilee” can be described as a tale of people who struggle, work hard, and find fruitful results in their work. A lot of them see success, but many of them also end up finding failures. Failures from which they learn to pick up their lives and rebuild them just to be able to move forwards This Vikramaditya Motwane and Soumik Sen show is set in a time when women hardly had the power vested in them to be able to make any crucial life decisions. ReviewIf life is an unpredictable occurrence, so is death, says the unified chant of the five filmmakers, even as each presents their case in their unique tone and sensibility.Pentagon / ScreengrabAnthology films managed to find a second lease of life following the advent of streaming platforms. In India, the resurgence of the format could be attributed to the star-studded four-part feature Bombay Talkies (2013) which, as a grand attempt to mark the centenary year of Indian cinema, brought together the four noted filmmakers Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, and Anurag Kashyap. Since then, one has seen several engaging themes and topics being moulded into anthologies and, in turn, helping the short film format thrive in parallel. Lust Stories, Paava Kathaigal, the Modern Love franchise, Navarasa, Anger Tales, and Kannada's own Katha Sangama (both 1975 & 2019) are some of the noteworthy endeavours in this format. In Guru Deshpande's five-film anthology Pentagon, the...

Sinister. Diabolic. Macabre. Wicked. Those are the respective moods Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and Karan Johar broadly bank upon, to thrill with their latest collaborative attempt. "Ghost Stories" is guaranteed to send a chill down your spine that should make the ongoing searing winter a tad more discomforting, and if you are a true-blue horror buff you won't complain.
Horror is a restrictive genre. Traditionally, it is associated with whipping up loud, quickfix tricks that guarantee instant scares, which is why script, performances and originality often take a backseat. It is a reason A-list artistes and filmmakers normally desist from participating in the genre.

Another month, another smattering of new Netflix titles to sift through. And it seems the online streamer is kicking off 2020 with a host of juicy horror movies and TV shows.
First thing’s first: there’s a number of big-name titles leaving the service next month, including Panic Room, Grease, American Pyscho, and the Spartacus series. And it doesn’t stop there.
We’ve compiled the full list below, but a special mention must go to two particularly exciting horror additions: Sam Raimi classic The Evil Dead and Tremors.

Until quite recently, the subjects related to the queer identity hadn’t been a part of Indian Cinema. Even if some efforts were being taken in the form of the films like “Fire” (1996) or the anthology films like “I Am” (2010) or “Bombay Talkies” (2013), they either faced severe controversies or catered only a core art-house film-enthusiast. With the change in the country’s legal affairs related to same-gender couples, there’s a rise in such topics and their voices are being heard. Swarnavel Eswaran’s “Kattumaram” falls in the same vein. It talks about the same-sex relationship in the context of Indian traditions. Moreover, it speaks on how that affects the people from a lower part of the social paradigm.

NetflixThis anthology film brings together four directors, each of whom gives us a compelling tale.Mridula RLust Stories to begin with is you, me and literally everyone from any generation ever. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee and Karan Johar, Netflix's Lust Stories is an anthology, showcasing stories of relationships across different people. People from various generations, caste locations, socio economic status and upbringing. But, with the common ground being - Lust. With this anthology, the directors come together again after Bombay Talkies and deliver a fine watch. The 2-hour watch, divided into four parts, begins with Kalindi's story. Radhika Apte plays a college professor who is in a long distance marriage with Mihir and in an experimental stage with her man. With Mihir encouraging an open relationship, Kalindi finds herself contemplating the concepts of love, attraction and so on as she starts a fling with one of her students, Tejas (Akash Thosar). How she deals with the men she is attracted to is what follows. Through this part of the story, Anurag gives us a very realistic picture of open relationships, age gaps and also the 'logic' behind how a woman can be attracted to or rather inclined towards two men at the same. We also see how the director connects the story to the influence of technology through Kalindi, to whom Radhika gives the best face. The actor is a natural and gives one of her best performances yet. We laugh and very much relate to her girl-next-door yet sophisticated narratives. The director-actor duo definitely make for an intriguing collaboration. We then move on to Zoya Akhtar’s film involving Bhumi Pednekar and Neil. In this story, the director presents to us a tale of lust between a domestic worker and her boss. Zoya presents a very raw screenplay of the relationship between a woman from the lower class and the upper middle class man for whom she works. Most of our takeaways from the film come through Bhumi’s endearing performance which is all conveyed through expressions and barey any dialogues. Zoya manages to capture the essence of Lust Stories with just the first sex scene itself. She nowhere tries to paint a rosy picture of people's everyday sex lives, making us realise what a rare thing this is in Indian cinema. The third part, directed by Dibakar Banerjee, presents the story of Reena (Manisha Koirala) who is having an affair with Sudhir (Jaideep Ahlawat), her underappreciating husband, Salman's (Sanjay) best friend. What Dibakar does through Lust Stories is not a cliched projection of yet another extramarital affair. The screenplay very smoothly showcases the frustrations of a woman in such a situation, the ignorance of the men and a person's vulnerability towards friendship and attraction. Manisha is a delight to watch as she plays Reena, the woman who has to keep everything together for no reason whatsoever. We've probably never looked at forced togetherness or the craving for another being handled the way it is, in this story. Both, Manisha Koirala and Jaideep Ahlawat prove their versatility with this story of a very chaotic situation faced by three adults. And Sanjay is quite the perfect middle man. Post this, we reach Karan Johar’s world. His segment in Lust Stories is not particularly filmy, but yet has the Karan touch. The last part of the anthology follows the story of Megha Verma (Kiara Advani), a young school teacher, her whacky and seductive colleague Rekha played by Neha Dhupia, and Megha’s weirdly goofy husband played by Vicky Kaushal. The story follows Megha’s journey of dealing with a husband who is at it night after night and yet fails to understand the basics of sex and the female orgasm. All of this and more is highlighted aptly by Karan. This story too is bold, upfront and has got women characters who are unapologetically themselves, despite society’s prejudices and taboos. Neha’s role as Rekha is brutally honest and her lines are very much what is required in such genre of cinema representing everyday humans. It's also during the last part that Lust Stories leaves us in splits and manages to create an impact, at the same time. While we don’t want to give away the brilliant scene that shapes Megha’s life, aced by Kiara Advani, all we can say is that Karan recreates the famous Ugly Truth scene for this Hindi drama, and that’s a defining moment. Unsatisfactory sex lives, the importance of communication during intimacy, arranged marriages, elderly taboos and many more come into the limelight. Lust Stories gives us characters and narratives, matters of the heart and body that we are going to ponder for a long time after. The anthology has a fine cast and brings together actors who fit the bill very well. Actors, who get etched in our minds as Sudhir, Sudha, Kalindi and so on. Through every story, the film breaks the suffocating silence regarding sex and the stigmas associated with it. Lastly, Lust Stories gives us honest perspectives of four woman. Their liberation, thoughts, decisions and everything else packaged perfectly. Cinematically, it is not your average romantic comedy experience. From the casting to the screenplay and an urban Mumbai setup and the music with compositions like Prateek Kuhad’s Tune Kaha and more, we realise how this film doesn’t follow the blueprint of any other. The Netflix watch is a very Indian - lust drama-comedy to say best. It is layered and has definitely more than what meets the eye. "You always hurt people that you love!" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an anthology film titled Lust Stories, telling four different stories about modern romance and love in India. The film is directed by four major directors: Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee. Just a few months ago, Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee were neck-deep in shooting. And this was for an anthology that was themed around lust. Bringing together the quadruple team of Bombay Talkies, yet another film will have four different stories to tell. Titled Lust Stories, this film will however release only on digital platform – Netflix. Unlike Bombay Talkies that hit the theatres in 2013, the 2018 anthology Lust Stories is opting for a different approach. The film, which is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Ashi Dua, has decided to experiment with the digital platform.

In fact, in a tweet posted by Karan Johar about his film from the anthology, he captioned it as Bombay Talkies 2. This hasn’t gone down well with Viacom allegedly. On the other end, Ashi Dua has denied receiving any legal notice from the production house. She also asserted that the title of her film is finalized as Love and Lust and it is differently themed from Bombay Talkies.

Chauranga, produced by Onir and Sanjay Suri, and directed by Bikas Ranjan Mishra, has run into trouble, with the Censor Board asking the filmmakers to delete two vital scenes from the film. The filmmakers have been asked to remove a love-making sequence between Sanjay Suri and Tannishtha Chatterjee, as they feel the scene is derogatory to women. Another crucial scene involving a Dalit boy being pushed into a well has also been asked to be deleted.
The film is based on the story of a high-caste zamindar from Jharkhand and the love-making scene between Sanjay and Tannishtha, who works in his home, is a very vital part of the film. It seems Anurag Kashyap managed to watch Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do at a special screening and he simply can't stop raving about it.
He wrote on a social networking site, "Zoya Akhtar all the best for "Dil Dhadakne Do" , you know this one's gonna kill it. You want to laugh your socks off, go watch this crazy family guys."
Anurag also went to appreciate Anil Kapoor in the film and wrote, "See Anil Kapoor like you have not seen him in a long time."
It can be recalled that Anurag and Zoya directed two separate short films in 2013's Bombay Talkies. Karan Johar and Dibakar Banerjee separately directed the other two films in Bombay Talkies.

Dear Dibakar
You have set the trend for grim, hatke cinema that catches the viewer unawares. Your style of story-telling is entirely your own and this is what was seen even in a small segment in Bombay Talkies where four directors displayed their talent. Yours was a masterpiece. The way you exploited Nawazuddin Siqddiqui's talent was amazing, not to mention the wide camera angle that spoke the unspoken words.
Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Love Sex Aur Dhoka and Shanghai were other films that had your unmistakable stamp of creativity. You scared the viewers as well as entertained them.
So what went wrong with Detective Byomkesh Bakshy? The film was good, but it was just that: Good. There was no Dibakar Banerjee stamp of authenticity over the film like it has been in the above-mentioned earlier films. What happened? Did you have to tweak the subject to suit the Yash Raj banner?...

Although Kangna Ranaut has rightfully walked away with the National award as Best Actress for her performance as the Delhi girl on a solo honeymoon after being deserted by her fiance on the eve of their wedding, the rest of the Queen team was in for a disappointment, especially director Vikas Bahl who lost the best director award to the Bengali auteur director Srijit Mukherjee who won the best director award for Chatuskhon. Srijit admits he was "pleasantly surprised" by the win considering Queen was such a popular film. "It is a rare honour and I am totally overwhelmed," says Srijit. It may be mentioned here that last year, Queen was embroiled in a plagiarism controversy when it was alleged that the film's theme was suspiciously similar to Parvati Balagopalan's unsung film Phir Zindagi. While he is often being associated with creativity and dark films, Anurag Kashyap slowly yet steadily has carved a space in commercial cinema too. With his magnum opus Bombay Velvet now entering the final stage, the director decided to take a breather and shift his attention towards short films. It is not new for the filmmaker to venture into this familiar zone but this time around, he has found a space to feature his film on an international platform. MTV International has approached Anurag Kashyap for an anthology based on theme of extra marital relationships. Anurag who has given his thumbs up for it, stated that it is a rare chance where he can explore creativity devoid of commercial pressures. He also further added that the film will star his favourite Radhika Apte and Satyadeep Mishra of No One Killed Jessica fame and he has already started shooting for it.

After doing a short film in Bombay Talkies, Rani Mukerji was back in action with Mardaani. With rave reviews and Yash Raj Films exploring the new path of dark and realistic films, Mardaani surely turned out to be one of the best films of Rani's career. We hear that the state government has organized a felicitation ceremony in Bhopal for Rani on September 12 which will also be graced by many other state bureaucrats. It is being said that when the actress received the invitation from the state government about this function, she immediately responded to the message positively. A hard hitting and realistic take on child trafficking and prostitution, Mardaani hit the silverscreen this week. However, we hear that the movie will not see the light of the day in Pakistan. The film board and distribution of Pakistan has denied the request of releasing the Rani Mukerji starrer in the country. According to the Pakistani distributor Rehmat K Fazli, there was too much adult content in the film and hence, there were too many deletions being requested which is why it was rejected for public exhibition. It is being said that there were about seven cuts and certain scenes were asked to be blurred keeping in mind the stringent rules of the Pakistani Board.
