Ambitious but Painfully Contrived
tishvalenzuela11 October 2023
I really wanted to like this film and had high hopes as it was recommended by a friend.

Production, acting and cinematography was "Class A" but the writing, script and overall plot could have been more polished. I love how ambitious and different the premise was from the usual fare of Filipino cinema, but the film in many ways still fell into a cadence of plot devices typical of mainstream Filipino telenovelas and dramas- which disappointed me and had me itching to leave the theater towards the end.

Overall, while I appreciate how timely, witty and fun the overall experience was, I do not appreciate adding story elements for sheer shock value. It just felt like lazy writing to me. I have much hope though, for these two veteran actresses and the Filipino audience as a whole- if more stories that defied expectations were made, I would be a very happy critic.

Great performances, hit and miss story
jpismyname5 October 2023
A Very Good Girl has some good messages to share. The movie doesn't know what it wants to be though. It's like, confused or something.

The acting is top-notch. Dolly de Leon is just perfect, which isn't really surprising. I hope to see more of her. Honestly I was doubting Kathryn Bernardo at first but it's very interesting to see a new side of her, and she played it very well.

The story is a hit and miss for me. It has some good moments, particularly Dolly and Kathryn's scenes. The climax was really great with a really shocking twist until the ending, which I didn't like very much. I dunno. I still recommend this film.

Sayang naman! (What a shame)
ejayona1 January 2024
Story line was there, but the script looked rushed and unpolished. Is it really why the genre of this film is comedy because honestly i cant help but laugh at the ending.

I cant help but to feel sorry for the film because the scripwitting was too shallow too far from the expectation of having a Dolly de Leon in the cast which at first will make you think that this film would be as "Cannes Film Festival" caliber. Yeah, the production design was there, however the Miranda Prestley vibe that Peterssen Vargas want to acheive for Dolly fell short.

The only thing I guess I liked is the musical scoring which paid homage to classic Pinoy divas: Leah Navarro and Kuh Ledesma which added a bit of a depth in the attempt to level up the musicality.

Expectations... meh. Nice try though.

Good movie and acting.

Warning: Spoilers
The two leads did a great job in this movie, very good acting overall. The lead character, Philo/Mercy, not only had an incredible look and on-screen presence (one of the most attractive people ever put on screen) but she was incredibly sympathetic and well acted. The movie started in a very campy way, I couldn't figure out what direction it was going but the movie turned incredibly dark at times. One of the things that I liked was Mercy's backstory was so tragic and fleshed out that even when she was doing bad things and making bad decisions, I still felt sorry for her and supported her quest all the way. On the flip side, Mother was the opposite, cruel beyond belief and irredeemable even when she seemed vulnerable. Her character is probably similar to how most of our worlds wealthy act and treat those less than them. At one point, Mother teases Mercy in a manner of saying "you're too poor to do anything to me" and it's just this arrogance around her that makes you hate her. The movie had some good twists and kept the viewer guessing at all times, with some good suspenseful moments.

The main highlight of this movie though is in the theme of watching a young woman's life unravel after getting fired from her job. How unempathetic her employer was, how the firing unraveled every ounce of her life and even lead to the loss of a family member. It was very dramatic and sent a clear message to the viewer about how cruel the real world is. In todays world, it's a message that needs to be seen more because our employers really don't care about us and hold so much power on us that they can ruin our lives at the snap of a finger. I found myself feeling very connected to Mercy because it was such a realistic tragedy and while her response was extreme, it made me wonder about how much our wealthy get away with literally every cruelty they do while we just sit around and take it.

I do wish the ending brought a bit more closure to the story, but overall I enjoyed it.

The unpredictable twist that never came...
harleyhulu28 December 2023
This movie was painful to watch. It attempted to be a dark revenge movie but missed the mark by a mile. It tried to shock the audience through gratuitous cursing and sexual scandals that came off cringy. The story line was very predictable and main character was hard to root for. The flash backs were abrupt and the more the past was revealed, the more the present action did not make sense. As the main character got close to her goal, she then turns around and does something that doesn't make sense. Bad story telling, bad resolution, bad movie. I watched hoping for quality but instead got trash. It was as mediocre as the actress's cosmetic surgeries.

IT'S NOT WHAT I THINK.
yurahamni4 January 2024
At first, when i was watching it feels like that has a vibes of ten little mistresses. WHICH same genre or inspired in "Knives Out". The narrating is quite okay, no bias the story should need to polished. I mean ending is just karma. I give it a 6.0%/10%, 7.9% in acting, 6.0% in music, 7.9% in producing. ITS VERY ENTERTAINMENT FOR ME. Revenge drama like this is like "Ten Little Mistresses".

We have to realize that not all people are trusted so easiy. The motive of the main character is quite obvious that because people deceive you, and money deceive you as well. Overall my advice is the writing should be polished. This movie have another storytelling as well "Nanahimik ang Gabi".

I told you so
jezeillyn29 December 2023
The acting was of course evidently superb. No doubt about it. The plot of the story was so expected, it was a no brainer. They cussed so awkwardly and just trying to insert it in every scene which resulted to look like a "trying hard" moment. There are just scenes that are soooo frkn cringy. Too much hype of a movie that it was really such a pity that the storyline doesn't even equal the amount of range of how great the actors were.

Just if you are so curious, then go ahead watch the movie. And if you cringed, then just don't forget that I said, "I told you so".

Went with my Filipino wife
beavanjb11 October 2023
I don't regularly watch chich flicks or even Tagalog films, so for me this was a fun change of pace. Which also means this movie is pretty good and well done. The editing is very modern for today's generation which has short attention spans. The acting by the 2 lead women is fantastic and most of the women characters are well developed. I won't say the film is anti-male, but they purposely made the few male characters into bad generic roles. Despite the long running time, the movie is fast paced and has a deep story that is both fun to watch and keeps you interested in the back story. You really get to know all the characters hearts and by the end you really want Philo to committ the ultimate sin before the the ultimate karma comes for Mother. This is a good movie, not your typical Filipino romance drama you see all the time.

I really wanted to like this movie
c-5762229 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Can we move on from the old overdone trope seen in many Filipino movies and series: rich vs poor, poor exacting revenge on the rich. We can do much better to represent, no?

Script? Some of the lines, the delivery thereof were cringe-worthy and predictable. I was able to guess the next scene before it happened. Story line? So many subplots that detracted from the main story. Over the top acting, cliche camera angles. What's with the overdone make up?

I'm sure the actors are all very capable but they didn't shine. I guess it just goes to show that talent in the right Director's hands can shine. It's too bad because Dolly De Leon proved herself in "Triangle of Sadness".

I kept hoping it will get better. 1hr 57min I'll never get back. I really wanted to like the movie.

Almost!
theajs-599882 January 2024
The movie was good. I would recommend it to people who are looking for something to watch because you can't just not like it in general. I commend the script of this movie as it has brilliant and quotable lines. This made me question and weigh my morals, to judge whether what the characters' decision was good or bad.

There are just rooms for improvement in Kathryn Bernardo's (Philo/Mercy) acting. Great visuals, facial and body expressions but her delivery of lines kind of fell flat. Especially in parts where she's supposedly acting tough but it's just a little lacking, she's not used to this genre and it shows. Dolly De Leon's (Molly) and Chie Filomeno's ( Zab) acting fit their characters like a glove.

I would also like to call out lines that children typically says in generic Filipino films, no Filipino kid blurts out straight Filipino when talking so it's time for writers to be more innovative yet not try too hard to portray a 'gen Z' trait.

The film also felt long. The duration was 2 hours but it felt longer. A lot of questions were left in my head as the movie ended as well such as what exactly was Molly's money laundering scheme? How bad really was it?

The ending was great though, the music fits so well.

Overall, it is a movie that will be a hit for the Filipino mass.

Didn't quite live up to expectation
darkgreymatter3 January 2024
The acting was wooden, particularly the portrayal of the protagonist, which often leaned toward overacting. While many fans seem eager to defend it by labeling the movie as "campy," it's essential to note that a film can still maintain a level of tastefulness even with a campy vibe. Unfortunately, in this case, the balance wasn't quite achieved.

The plot twist and revelation at the end were disappointingly executed. It felt as if the filmmakers were trying to inject a shocking element into the story, but the result was more of a jarring disconnect. For a plot twist to be effective, it needs to seamlessly integrate with the existing narrative, offering a fresh perspective rather than feeling forced.

DISAPPOINTMENT AT ITS FINEST
rgnmeraki10 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
What were the writers thinking? What's the point of all that? I honestly anticipated this film because it is one of those showpieces that looks like they have the b*lls to pull off this kind of genre - but I was wrong. The actors were great, the camera angles were superb; the problem lies on how the story was written. It felt forced and rushed.

At the first part of the film, I pictured 'MOTHER' to be this intimidating existence where everyone is affected just by her mere presence in a room. Unfortunately, I did not quite catch her as this astounding person everybody looks up to, especially when she is supposed to be a catalyst for Mercy's change. Although I can see Dolly De Leon completely nailing being MOTHER, the character was so badly written.

There are relevant issues that they did address which is good but in the end, it didn't live up to expectations. The unnecessary cussing? No.

At the later parts, we can see Mercy drifting far away from the values her real mother taught her. Her relationship with the people who really matter began to deteriorate, that was a good element. I would have loved to see more of what was going in her mind and see this chaos be brought out to reality. Like break down and realize what the consequences are.

When Mercy finally had the chance to execute her revenge, she bailed out at the last minute. After every horrible thing she did, she suddenly decides that she is not that kind of person. And karma - I guess - did its thing. What was that? A revenge story? What a joke.

Aimed High but Fell Flat
aeriellejoyce30 December 2023
This film was heavily marketed and embellished by the media before its actual release. They hyped it up as a film that will shake things up and blow our minds. I was excited. I wanted this to be good, but it fell flat.

The film's story truly reminds us why we have terms like "suspension of disbelief". The plot is full of holes, the dialogue is corny, and the overarching narrative is incoherent and lacking in realism. The production value also fluctuates in certain scenes.

The main actress' quality of acting also suffers because of her delivery of english dialogues. Her english accent here does not do her talent justice because it was entirely void of all of the nuances and emotions that she usually nailed in the native tongue. Here, she sounded more like a high-schooler reciting lines in class instead of a decorated actress projecting a character.

The majority of the film's duration, I felt as though I was watching one of those low-effort youtube movies where they gather a bunch of influencers together and make them do skits. If you're wondering what I mean by that, look up Dhar Mann films on youtube. Play one video, and you will be shocked by the similar dialogue delivery and pretentious plot.

I think it would have benefitted the movie had it not taken itself seriously. The story, while trying to frame itself as different, but unfortunately fell back on the same old terrible tropes found in Filipino cinema and television.

Superb

In A Very Good Girl, the cinematic brilliance unfolds as the narrative delves into the intricacies of human connections. The characters, portrayed with remarkable depth by the cast, breathe life into a story that seamlessly blends heartwarming moments with poignant reflections. The director demonstrates a mastery of storytelling, creating a film that resonates on both an emotional and intellectual level. With visually striking scenes and a soundtrack that complements the mood perfectly, this movie is a testament to the power of storytelling in cinema. A Very Good Girl is not just a film; it's an immersive experience that lingers in the audience's mind, leaving an indelible mark long after the final scene.

Painful to watch.
tingski2 January 2024
They hyped this movie so much, you expected you'll see a good movie. Or at least an entertaining one. I wasn't entertained. Incredulity was the state of my mind while watching this. Too many inconsistencies. One user said it's contrived. I agree.

Actors needed some direction - some of them tended to over act. Though Dolly & Kathryn are OK. Was surprised Kathryn can act - from the love team Kathniel, I thought she'll give a lukewarm or a wimpy performance.

I will not pay 400 pesos to watch this in a moviehouse. I would like to support our movie industry but movies like this make me think twice.

And "Dito Ba?" at the end...???

Giant insult to Filipino Cinema
tkentsh3 January 2024
Absolute trash!. Beyond trash even. Waste of talented actors and purposeless plot. Full of hatred. Pointless. Why??? I would be disappointed in my country for putting out this nonsense. Also what's with the repeated cursing? Is this supposed to feel more American now or something? Can't you write a better script than just have multiple uses of the same curse word over again. Come on just make good Filipino movies. Don't try to copy some other stuff out there. Don't waste 2 hours of your life. I am warning you. The titi at the beginning of this movie was a red flag right of the bat. I should have known something as stupid as that could only be bull**** as the old lady in this movie would say.

Not for me
edsonhelenrieviewl2 February 2024
The movie at start was good, the fashion, the actors was good but all ive noticed its from a movie " A Devil wears PRADA" & "Cruella" but back to the thing its a good movie but the ending made me not that really satisfied and near the ending was a sexual thing was kinda cringe,

kathryn made it always good her part was always been good in every movie, the make up, how she dress and how she wears it and how her character changed in that movie she handled her character very well and different.

For people who did not have yet i slightly recommend this movie for girl nights its fun at the same time tho!

Sayang...
ralphraeglindo22 January 2024
I know that the writers wanted to tell a good story on this one, although a revenge plot is nothing new depends on how it was executed and how the story unfolds, however A Very Good Girl failed to achieve that storytelling for Mercy, co'z I felt nothing as it reaches the end of the film.

The story felt rushed, maybe the script writing was constrained on how to squeeze a series-long revenge story in a 2-hour movie. Mercy's character development is one thing, then the revenge scheme is another. I really felt the disconnect between Mercy and Philo, sayang.

I really believe this film had potential, if only it was given more time on the script writing and maybe peer reviews from other writers? Next time hopefully...

Overhyped
betaniohermilynanne17 January 2024
The teasers, the trailer, and most importantly the 2 main actors - this movie got my attention from the very beginning that's why my anticipation and expectation was so high. However, it was so high that the drop was so hard and painful. This movie disappointed me because of how the story went. Up until the last scene, I was just so confused and had a lot of questions. For me, this movie wanted to show everything that it became so messed up. Despite the main actors' credibility, it just didn't fit in to the standard. I have to agree with people who said that this movie was overhyped. So sad because they even had a red carpet premiere in Hollywood. I wonder what they (people who attended the event) genuinely thought about this movie?

I can't believe it is a box office movie
monicachielovillanueva13 January 2024
The movie is so cringy. Plot twist-non sense. Not worth the hype. Not worth to watch. I really believe it was a box office movie, honestly. Character's acting is also very cringy. I only watch it from Netflix and i felt sorry for those people who watched and paid for the cinemas. The movie , a very good girl, was also boring and at the middle of it you might want to fast forward some scenes that are non sense and not worth watching. Acting wise, I don't know, maybe they are good but it just seems like just weird.

I am telling you, you will be disappointed watching this movie, and might even wonder, really a box office movie?

Not hype worthy, tbh
crrylai6 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Me and my 4 cousins watched this out of curiosity because we have heard so much hype about it, saying Kath is a different person in this movie and it's very different, very unique.

The first part of the film was "okay". My cousins was so confused but I got that she hated Molly and wanted to make a revenge. The effects, the cenematic. Very eye-catching. I didn't feel the slightest drowsiness during the entire film because the effects are so catchy, I'm so invested in knowing what will happen.

However, as the story progresses, it feels so stupid. There's so many "WHY". She's become a pawn to Molly at the end. There's no direction, she's just moving according to Molly and everytime she does something on her own, she fails drastically.

If Molly didn't get what she got at the last part of the film, then Mercy's life would've been hell after what happened that time. Not to mention, very cringey acting of the female lead. Feels so forced, doesn't feel natural at all. I feel the secondhand embarrassment so bad.

I would've rated 1 star overall but the makeup is so good. I love the makeup so I'll rate it 2 stars.
