"Do You Hear It?. It Is The Sound Of The Flowers"
bazneck20 November 2023
What can I say? In my opinion, this is the best drama of the year, perhaps the best in a long time, and undoubtedly the finest historical drama. It's a beautiful, inspirational adult love story with none of the fluffy stuff. The drama takes you on an emotional rollercoaster with many heart-wrenching moments throughout. While it touches on controversial topics, it deals with them beautifully, sparking diverse opinions.

The actors, especially the main leads, were phenomenal. The cinematography, fight scenes, and OST were amazing. Sure, you could point out some flaws in the plot, but let's be honest, most dramas have them.

This drama has secured a spot in my top ten, a list that I often tweak based on my mood. It joins the likes of "What's Wrong with Secretary Kim," "Itaewon Class," "Fight My Way," "Hometown Cha-Cha," "Flower of Evil," "Touch Your Heart," "Vincenzo," and "Strong Girl Bong-soon."

Honestly, I stumbled upon this drama by accident and didn't know the main leads very well. However, I watched it with an open mind and have no regrets. I found myself completely engrossed, never skipping a moment, even when the storyline got frustrating at times. The drama also boasts scenes that are worth watching over and over again.

I highly recommend it to people who enjoy the melodrama, romance, and sageuk genres. It's a must-watch!

A MASTERPIECE. The Acting is "Chefs Kiss"
ljansen-8768229 October 2023
It's the second Kdrama I have ever given 10 stars! Many have written synopsis on the story so I will refrain. Except to say this is absolutely no GWTW copy.

Have no idea why I started watching this and confess at the second Ep ready to abandon it, but suddenly it picked up in Ep3 and really took off. Through the horror of war and hunger I settled in for the ride and became mega hooked. Appreciation sank in as I watched masterful acting and took a personal interest in the outcome of almost all these characters lives.

The lead actors are both utterly astonishing! Both the ML and FL are a dream together. They take my breath away with the skill and genuineness with which they interpret the scriptwriter's intent with this plot of love loss in a difficult time in Korea's history. The Director deserves applause and a bouquet for his direction.

The cinematographer comes in bang on target with appropriate wide sweeping shots, magnificent colour and moving scenes. (the kiss in the field was excellently shot), With yet another massive bouquet for the Casting Director. Nearly forgot (slap wrists), the Costume Designer! The Qing Dynasty outfits are astonishingly beautiful and don't look like some fake Halloween get up, but genuine clothing. You can see the research that went into creating them. Altogether the production is a rare joy. I cried, laughed, was anxious and lived alongside the joy, war, tears and escapades of this historical Kdrama series.

Whilst waiting for the Second Series to be aired I rewatched the first 3 episodes to comprehend the intent of the scriptwriter as the foundations It helped get me ready for the airing of the 2nd series.

The ML initial inability to seriously commit to a relationship and the growth of the FL which I found compelling; once her teenage immaturity, silly flirting and feisty outspokeness passes, she comes into her adulthood with a compelling inner strength during the war, and later when she initiates and run a business, whilst becoming responsible for proving for her family and servants. The ML makes it clear it is her "brazenness" that he admires.

Currently at Ep 16, with four more to be aired but absolutely no hesitation in declaring My Dearest/Lover is easily my favourite Kdrama. I highly recommend it for viewing.

Update: Ep 21. The perfect ending.

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

Viewed: English subtitles + Korean audio.

That Rare Gem
AJ_McAninch2 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The series is superb and heading for greatness in the KDrama lists of its classics. First, there are wonderful aspects of "My Dearest"--great acting from the entire cast, superb writing, excellent, careful direction, gorgeous soundtrack, and more. Yet along with the carefully evolving FL, who is superb, it is the master class in acting that Namkoong Min is developing for us that makes me gasp. I am so deeply touched by what he has given both to AEJ as her Co-Star to work with and to us for our enjoyment. It is an unforgettable work of dramatic art in both his delicacy and strength. Plus those deeply expressive eyes and his quiet, beautiful voice. He has worked so hard for years and become one of the finest actors of his era.

This series began by teasing us with flirtations and long looks: a beautiful man with a fan loving a charming woman more than himself. It then advanced to the man dropping the fan that was only a distraction anyway to the real man, the experienced warrior behind those eyes who risks his life repeatedly, and the "girl on a swing" revealing herself as a brave warrior who assumes the leadership role to protect other women and children.

The series has steadily moved us through numerous scenes of increasing danger and heartbreak, that were leading us to where we are now. It is a love story, yes, but it is also about invasion, war, escape, resistance, horror, and the violent treatment of the poor, elderly, women and children in a horrific reverse of their community into a war zone with them as the sacrifice.

It is terrifying, heartbreaking. And no love story can change that. But it can give us hope. The woman in the love story is brave and resolute in protecting others. GC has become the woman LJH saw and fell in love with the first day as he watched her floating high on the swing. And he is not just the man who loves and protects her but is also revealed as the resistance fighter who saw her and knew who she was. As he tells Ryang, "you do not know what she means to me." But we do. They are both wonderful as is this constantly evolving story.

Update

"My Dearest" Eps 18 & 19 I was able to sit down with my morning coffee and enjoy both episodes this weekend.

And it was very interesting to see how the entire series was moving this way all along-just as the writer and direction teams intended. For this is not just the romance most of us here share an abiding hope will be fulfilled, but also a historical study of the Qing invasion and its effects on Joseon, its people at all levels, and its future. These are all seen in the madness of the king taken out on his own people and family, the grief of the people-symbolized in the death of the baby, that the mother must bury with her own hands-and the shared anguish of the citizens just trying to return home but slaughtered by the misuse of power.

Additionally, there is more than one love story, and they are on multiple levels. But of course the central love story is that of JH and GC, who at the beginning seem to be a man with a waving fan but who is so much more, and a woman with a rising swing who finds out who she really is through his love for her. If the writer closes next weekend the way she seems to be moving, the outcome will be complex, as is the historical reality. And it should also become one of Drama's greatest achievements. But even if it falls short, the writer, production team, cast, and composers have given us a series that many of us love. That is an achievement in itself. So onward to next weekend and closure with hope and maybe a few tears.

Final Episodes 20-21 Closure

There are tragedies, of course: this is a violent invasion; we will lose characters we care about and be disappointed in some others. But there are also blessings: GC's growth into the strong, protective, loving woman she becomes is one of the finest in film. And JH always knew who she was. Ahn Eun Jin's transition in her performance is magnificent. And even the princess who wants JH so much does the right thing in the end: because she in fact does love him in her way. The cast on all levels is one of the most talented in KDrama-and they made us care. The production team taught us about the Qing invasion of Korea along with the monstrous political behavior of Koreans in power, and kept those effects, especially on the people, firmly in front of us.

Min Nam Koong as Jang Hyun created one of the most heroic characters in film, and he does it with his deceptive fan, steady calm, interrupted when needed by explosive defenses of his people and the woman he loves. But he is also funny, ironic, and adorable, created through his warm, beautiful voice, and the delicate expressions from his eyes and mouth. The man is simply beautiful and so gifted we fall in love with his characters. All of the cast and production team are outstanding-but it is Min Nam Koong who commands every scene he fills-and we cannot look away.

So though I didn't like JH getting beaten up all the time and being forced to use the amnesia trope not once but twice-I love "My Dearest" and its cast and production team and especially the character Jang Hyun that Min NamKoong created and so many of us fell in love with. He is one of the finest actors in the world today, and new fans are discovering him every day.

What a wonderful experience is this fine drama.

Highly underrated Must watch PS.Misleading tag
tpradeepkkumar16 October 2023
First of all it has a melodrama tag so most people like me will skip this drama. But just because of namgoong min I gave it a try. As expected first 2 episodes were kind of melodrama. But I still continued for another 2 episodes. That's when things started to go south . Episode 4 I was crying like hell . I was invested in this . This is not just melodrama. It was action , gore , thriller . Now I realised why namgoong min accepted a period drama.

It's nothing like romantic period drama where main characters love each other and will get a happy ending and all. This is serious every character is well written. It's a must watch.

If the cast says Nam Goon Min, I'm in.
sanachattha26 September 2023
If it says Nam GoonMin, I'm in. I started watching him from "Remember", then "The Veil", "Doctor Prisoner"," Good Manager"... and especially last year's release "One Dollar Layer" was a top-notch masterpiece. He always knows what he's bringing to the screen. I started this drama and now I'm left even more mesmerized by his acting skills. The plot, cinematography, ost, acting... everything is so on point. Finally we got something unique after what feels like two years of boring cringe stuff. Only half of the series got aired yet, and I'm patiently looking forward to the next part. My love for Sageuk dramas has increased tremendously. Mr Queen, Red Cuff Sleeve and now My Dearest.

Not just memorable Kdrama - just outstanding!
nolamargie19 November 2023
I'd give My Dearest 20 stars if I could. Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun-jin turn this beautiful drama into a classic. I really don't know what to say except that if you love Kdramas My Dearest will rocket to the top of your favorites.

Namkoong Min is such a handsome guy, but after seeing a younger version in other dramas, and then watching a more mature man in My Dearest, I am struck by his beauty and talent. Like Sean Connery, he gets better as he ages! Ahn Eun-jin is beautiful, but she shines in this drama. The two of them are my favorite drama couple ever. The supporting cast is also so well done - all top notch actors who made me forget that they were acting parts as they were so natural and believable in their roles.

Additionally, the soundtrack for My Dearest is hauntingly beautiful. A classic in itself. I keep hearing the score because like the story, it is too special to forget.

My Dearest Is the Best Damn Love Story Going Strong
emw-0819220 August 2023
Min Namkoong yet again defies typecasting and brings it all to the table as an enigmatic man of the world smitten with a woman who when things get rough proves to be far more than a silly flirt. The Lady has spirit in a culture where it's not usually valued in a woman. This is NO damn wanna be GWTW as one reviewer yapped about. Gary Grant could only dream of having Min Namkoong's acting chops. And the rest of My Dearest/Lover 's cast are no slouches either in this romance amidst a war where smart strong leadership is in short supply. When those "precious lips" are kissed it's going be a HUGE moment. But that opening scene on the beach, well, it makes one wonder IF that moment will ever come.

Update edit: Mea culpa, indeed Cary Grant was not Clark Gable in GWTW. Still neither can compare to Min Namkoong--they're both third rate actors in comparison. Their status was created by Hollywood marketing. Min Namkoong's status is due to his remarkable talent.

Episode 11 is off to a grand start of the second half of My Dearest/Lover. Heartbreak like none other? !

In an award acceptance speech Min Namkoong thanked writer Hwang Jin-yeong for the wonderful script/story she worked on for five years.

Best of the best
hebataallahmohammad19 November 2023
Finally, I found the most beautiful, most wonderful, and best drama, i have watched from years.

"My dearest" As its name means, it is the dearest to my heart.

It is the best drama, in the cast, the dialogue, and the scenes in my opinion.

It is literally a "legendary love saga".

I'm so sad it's over. I'll miss it so much.

And of course I'll miss the great actors.

Also i hope that they will receive many awards, for this amazing work.

I would like to thank all the staff for these warm and beautiful moments that we felt while watching this legendary drama.

There are no words can describe such beauty. It is the best in everyway.

I hope everyone watches and enjoys this beautiful drama.

One of the greatest Kdramas after a long time
poulomihari9 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Kdrama industry had long been capitalizing on deadbeat tropes like cinderella stories, fantasy-thriller-romance, nine tailed fox etc. After a certain time you begin to see a pattern. So it was safe to say I took a sabbatical from Kdramas for almost a year. However I do have a liking for period dramas. My first Kdrama was infact the hindi-dubbed DD National edit of Emperor of the Sea. Ever since I have been in love with historical shows. Kdramas based on historical elements have their own charm. Last good one in this genre was Mr Queen and it was hillarious. The reason I love the historical fiction is because you get to see some politics which adds to the stakes of the story and makes the plot far more intense. I was craving for a fresh historical Kdrama with romance and everything. And so when I scrolled on the Viki app, "My Dearest" caught my attention with its lush scenery and gorgeous landscapes. Curiously, I clicked on the trailer and I was quickly taken aback by a familiar face- the most versatile Korean actor IMO, Nam Goong Min.

I vividly remember NamGoong Min playing various lead roles in several TV series. And yet his most memorable role so far had been the devious villain of "Remember". The actor has a charisma, there is no doubt about that. He donnes his character with such perfection that you soon forget who he is and suddenly find yourself lost in his eyes. The actor has extremely expressive eyes. I mean, he doesn't need a monologue, he can speak a whole page with the way he looks. All other actors pale before him, even the senior actors. He alone can carry the whole series on his shoulders. Even the worst, most corny lines can seem meaningful by the way he delivers them.

Coming to the plot, this one is a very fresh take on historical fiction. Most of the times historical fiction is layered with patriotism and unnecessary jingoism. This one however is tonally grim. It has a sarcastic overlook about the monarchy and the political system. The drama portrays the horrors of war, but adds a clever layer of dark humor. I was baffled at times when I found myself laughing at some scenes during the grim invasion sequence, and its not because of some crazy stunt. For example there is a terrifying scene of childbirth in the midst of an attack. The destitute women are hiding from intruders and they are trying their best to muff their voices. At that terrible moment when they are trying to help their companion deliver the baby, and the poor mother asks to check how far she is dilated. One of the maidens faint at the sight of blood, while the other somehow manages to see there's a 2 inch gap. The birthing mother then declares that its going to be a while. The humor was raw and it seriously made me chuckle even when I was at the edge of my seat. There is another scene which I'd say without spoiling much, its the scene where NamGoong Min stares at his lady love with a sort of disappointment laced curiosity as he watches her worry for another male while he is sitting right there.... He had that quintessential meme face, "the disappointed cricket fan" look. XD. I don't care what other people say, but this for me is a very fresh kind of humor.

Coming to the serious elements, this story is about star-crossed lovers. I binged through the 10 episodes and it was evident that this story is not going to end well. Its engaging because like the plot of Lucifer, you keep hoping that for once their timing would be right. But it keeps kicking you below the belt. You cry, you yearn, you pray for them but you always find they are victims of bad timing. Perhaps thats how the writers are keeping us hooked. In the meanwhile you get a glimpse of a war-torn country and the plight of commoners. It candidly explores the inner motives of people in power and how our loyalty and personal ideals serve really nothing. It slaps the system and those who wield power while it also shows a mirror to those who assume that their high morals are going to serve the nation. In today's social media world this story is extremely relevant. We are all keyboard warriors when it comes to defending our country, but how many of us can venture the real battlefield? Can we really pick a gun and shoot the enemies at the border? Showcasing enthusiastic confucian scholars willing to die for the nation and juxtaposing them with the central lead character who is a pragmatic fellow, it really humbles a whole sect of trolls and self-proclaimed intellectuals.

This series also has an LGBTQ+ representation. Its a very sexy undertone I must say. Ryang, the handsome sidekick of Jang Hwan, although not shown to be openly gay, but is evidently in love with his master. You can't tell me otherwise. There is no other reason why he would try to sabotage their relationship. There is a scene where he delicately places his head on his arm and contemplates how much it hurts to see his master obsessing over that girl.

While I don't know how many stories are yet to unfold, whether Lee Jang Hwan and Gil Chae Agassi would ever get to reunite, or whether they all die gruesome deaths leaving that one survivor in the beginning who is telling the story from a prison cell. I am however sure that this one will pull your heartstrings. I am mentally prepared to see a very tragic end to a love story (another Kdrama cliche). Overall this series is a must watch for people who love mature content. And by that I don't mean nudity or adult content. A mature content is food for an intellectual mind and blood for an empathatic heart. Its a kind of show that deserves an audience who are certainly a tad more elevated than society. People who love cheap content might find it boring or maybe too confusing, but for a grownup soul this one is a breath of fresh air.

A beautiful story of survival and eternal love
dbk-7865820 November 2023
A masterpiece! So beautiful. The male and female leads performances were mesmerizing. The drama will sweep the awards! Will forever be in my heart. Surpasses Mr. Sunshine with a far better ending. Everything about the drama is perfection. So riveting, heart wrenching and beautiful all at the same time. It is a story about survival and eternal love. I don't think I have ever been so emotionally moved by a drama. Every character was well developed especially the female lead. The story writing was incredible! Hollywood can't even come close to writing such a beautiful story that captures every emotion.

Binge Worthy? No Doubt!
Red_Sparrow_RSA19 November 2023
Set against the backdrop of the Joseon period during the Qing invasion, "My Dearest" weaves a compelling narrative that captures the essence of love amidst severe hardships. The series takes viewers on an emotional rollercoaster, offering a poignant portrayal of characters grappling with the challenges of their time.

The strength of the series lies in its ability to evoke a wide range of emotions. As a viewer, you are taken through the highs and lows of the characters' journeys, experiencing their joys, sorrows, and the depth of their love. The intense emotional investment in the characters is a testament to the well-crafted storytelling that keeps you engaged from start to finish.

The portrayal of the historical context, specifically the harsh realities of the Qing invasion during the Joseon period, adds depth to the narrative. The series effectively incorporates these historical elements, creating a rich backdrop against which the love story unfolds. This not only serves to educate the audience about the historical context but also enhances the overall authenticity of the setting.

The central love story is a standout feature of "My Dearest." The characters' unwavering commitment to each other in the face of adversity is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The challenges they must overcome to be together are a testament to the resilience of their love, making their journey a captivating and emotional experience for the audience.

The pacing of the series is commendable, evident in the fact that you found yourself binge-watching the entire series in just one day. This suggests a well-structured narrative that keeps viewers eagerly anticipating the next episode. The ability to maintain such momentum speaks to the series' ability to sustain interest and engagement.

The emotional impact of the series is perhaps most evident in its conclusion. The fact that you couldn't stop crying during the last episode indicates a powerful and cathartic climax. A beautiful ending adds the final brushstroke to the overall canvas, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.

In summary, "My Dearest" successfully combines historical drama with a compelling love story, eliciting a range of emotions from its audience. The well-developed characters, historical authenticity, and emotional depth contribute to a series that is not only entertaining but leaves a lasting impact.

If you don't mind a lot of sad content and the separation trope then it is very good
leahcubed26 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
7.5/10 is my rating. This is a 2023 South Korean Historical romance drama with 21, 60-90 minute episodes. It was originally divided into two parts: Part 1 with ten episodes and Part 2 with eleven episodes. So some say there are two seasons but there is only one season sometimes divided in two parts..

First I provide a Unique Synopsis then review.

Synopsis

Lee Jang hyun (Namkoong Min) is not the type of serious, respectful and honorable noble Yoo Gil chae (Ahn Eun jin) is used to encountering. He is a bit of what we would call these days, a lady's man but also a "player." He falls hard for the spirited Gil chae who, as the prettiest girl in her small community, has her pick of suitors. Of course the only guy she is interested in, Nam Yeon joon (Lee hak joo), is in love with her best friend. Kyung Eun ae (Lee da in), Gil chae's best friend would do about anything for her friend except give up the guy they both love. Eun ae knows Gil chae really just wants Yeon joon because he is not interested and that the roguish Jang hyun is actually a better match for her friend. Eun ae both kind and wise and knows that Jang hyun is actually a very kind and capable man who deeply cares for Gil chae. But Gil chae is slow to recognize her own feelings and does not believe Jang hyun's feelings are sincere. He has also clearly stated he is against marriage something any noble lady would scorn. Through war and the aftermath the two suffer many missed opportunities and Gil chae weds another man. Despite this, they both have each other firmly in their heart. Korea is suffering as the defeated party under a faction of China and the people are suffering by being impoverished, persecuted, killed and enslaved. Is there any hope for these two who seemed destined to be together?

Review

I do not like sad shows. If you like sad then you would definitely like this more than I did. I actually looked up the ending and it said it ended happy enough so I went with that. But what I didn't understand is, it may end fairly happy, but it is sad all over the place throughout. Why? Well it is loosely based on true events where there was this Josean king who became paranoid and did a lot of horrible things as a result. And the royals were always trying to poison each other. That is why food tasters were common in many countries among the royalty. It was good for what it was. Wonderfully acted, the filming was amazing, and it was interesting throughout. So, understand that my ranking is based mostly on the fact that it had sad threaded all through it. I would not watch it again because it made me too down. I would recommend it to people that like historical and do not at all mind sad content.

Spoilers

I read that it ends with him losing his memory but that he remembers events around her. But they are together. That is true and that is the way it is nearly to the very end. But, in the last few minutes, he fully remembers her it shows his gaze becoming more steady and he says her name and looks her right in the eyes. So he does fully remember her. But two things about that. I personally hate the amnesia trope in general. And he has not one but two separate periods of amnesia. And, since it ended that way, we don't know if he remembered any of the other people in his life.

Yeon joon was just an annoying character to me. I guess that wanted you to think Gil chae's love for him in the beginning was completely juvenile and ridiculous. He was never a character I admired as he was so sanctimonious and it shadowed and influenced everything he did. He was never as thankful to Jang hyun for protecting him during the war as he should have been. If he told Gil chae about that in a "he is my life safer" type way she might have admitted her feelings for Jang hyum sooner. But I think there was a part of Yeon joon that liked having Gil chae romantically interested in him.

Gil chae was really annoying in the beginning. It had a real "Gone with the Wind" sort of vibe as she started as a noble that was very princess like as she was the beauty of the community. Then war breaks out and she goes through serious hardship and has to suffer horribly at the hands of the Barbarians. And it did humble and change her. But then she scorns Jang Hyun and marries the man who lied on the path on the island to basically use her as Barbarian bait. I get that it was Jang hyun's fault a bit because, even at that point, he did not offer marriage but still you don't turn your back on someone that has done so much for you and you obviously have feelings for.

Eun au, on the other hand, was such a sweet, humble and loyal person from the beginning, I did not feel like Yeon joon deserved her. The way he treated her when she was asking about being "defiled" by Barbarians made me like him even less. And then when he was a traitor to Jang hyun by leading the soldiers that nearly killed him, I liked him even less. There were just a few moments in the end when he asked Eun au to go with her and if he was still her husband where I think they were trying to show he had come around, but it wasn't enough. So that wasn't a sweet side romance.

I thought the Crown Prince and Princess dying was just tragic and unnecessary. Yes that may have been what happened, or close to it, historically but they could have departed and had him live. And then to make the Princess a traitor and even kill the royal heir, just made it Greek tragedy level.

The royal concubine was the evil doer behind most of the tragic events and we did not get the benefit of seeing her taken down. Evil essentially won. And that may have been what happened in the historical event it was drawn from but stories have the opportunity to improve and depart from such things. I suspect the king in the end was the concubines' son. That was her goal to have her son put on the throne, but that was not very clear.

A large portion of the show was told with the main characters parted by war and other circumstance. I really dislike the separation trope so that being so prevalent and repetitive throughout the series was a serious negative to me. They were apart way more than they were together. Then, they would just get together briefly and either they would have a misunderstanding and go their separate ways, or a tragedy would strike and drive them apart. It was so frequent that the majority of the live commenters were complaining about them mostly being apart.

I guess the ending was supposed to be happy in the house he created to her specifications. But they were always surrounded by so many others throughout that them two alone just seemed very lonely. And it seemed they just planned to live as if dead so that he would not be hunted. But that was sad too. If it weren't for the mad king and the evil concubine he should have lived out a heroes' life.

Why review before 10 episode is complete. At least I watched every episode.
cassielund-036202 September 2023
Well this show was so promising until the end of the 9th episode. Yes it's obvious there will be a second season with the ending of part 10. It seems they are setting up a season 2 for him to fall in love with another women. The first season was a slow burn on the FL and ML which was getting good between them. Now the chemistry was destroyed by the story writing. It's a shame because now I really don't have a interest for a season 2 because they can't bring back the FL to create another spark. If they do then they creates a non worthy story which people would be mad for her having an affair. Also you don't want the ML to fall in love with another women because the original chemistry was very good between them. It's a losing story either way. No idea why writers think a crazy twist will make people want more. Simple stories with good chemistry is all you need.

Beautiful Love Story
akeleazer25 November 2023
My Dearest is a beautiful love story. I must say it's one of the best Korean dramas I have ever watched. The story is so beautiful, the acting is superb. There are other stories intertwined. The leading characters are such a strong and likable characters. The rest of the cast does such a great job with their characters/roles as well.

My only complaint is that sometimes the politics got confusing. I have watched a few historical dramas. But with this one at times I was lost. Perhaps I needed to pay better attention. However. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn't wait to keep watching every chance I got.

Kudos for the team production. The script are very well written. Every words came out from Jang Hyun towards Gil Chae are very captivating. Their acting are very on the top notch. Only from their eye gestures you can feel tons of emotions contained. Even thought the drama always tease us with the unpleasant scene and it's really torturing our heart but it's so worth it to watch. The strong love between Jang Hyun and Gil Chae are the key of this drama and not forget the supporting character really complete it. Gil Chae's character has really developed from the first to the second part and it's really wonderful. From childish Gilchae to matured and dependable Gil Chae. Nam Goong Min & Ahn Eun-Jin deserves an award.. Daesang for sure!

Every episode unfolded as a meticulously composed symphony, with each narrative note resonating profoundly. The characters, portrayed with nuance, breathed life into a tapestry of love, heartache, and resilience, creating a mesmerizing dance of emotions. The drama's ability to evoke a spectrum of emotions transformed it into a captivating rollercoaster, an immersive and unforgettable experience.

The cinematography, guided by a masterful hand, captured the essence of every scene. Light and shadow, actor choreography, and an evocative soundtrack harmonized seamlessly, creating a visual and auditory feast that elevated the viewing experience to a sublime level.

What a masterpiece. This Drama is perfect in all aspects... Strong and captivating storyline, with amazing acting skills and Characters, Male Lead is Extraordinary , strong and clear minded ....Female lead is perfect in her own way, bold and courageous lady. Every episode was so thrilling and exciting. It feels like i have lived through the whole Era of Joseon-Qing War..... It highlights all the aspects Of War and sufferings and fear of people. All the historic events seemed so realistic. The ending was so satisfying.... Tho i felt sorry for Ryang Eum ,he had to live in a mental asylum .... Highly recommended, must watch serial.

History-war-love kdrama at its best
antigone_19 November 2023
Telling the story of Qing invasion of Joseon Korea and its devastating aftermath on people from prince to servant through the eyes of an unconventional couple, it is as topical a story as it was centuries ago.

The depiction of war was incredible, original and realistic. The mistreating of people as slaves, of women considered miasma even by their own, every little aspect of how lives were ruined or used as collateral after the war supposedly ended was jaw-dropping and holded the biggest part of the series.

It was an excellent production and execution throughout.

It stumbled upon some typical kdrama cliches at the beginning and especially towards the end. Look past that, because it was such a great series to watch.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DRAMA
spotteddoe4 September 2023
There are few dramas with as much to offer as this one. I have just finished Episode 10 and am broken hearted that I must wait so long for the next episode. Very few story lines have had me so deeply inveased that I cannot bear to miss the weakly release of new episodes.

I do not want to give away details, and am shocked to see the note that I have writtrn too little. This show is so well producrd and acted that everyone deserves to be as delightfully astounded as I gave been.

I was thrilled to see a favorite male actor as lead in a romantic drama, but have gained a favorite frmale actress to look up as well.

Gone With the (Joseon) Wind
thorsburg-571381 September 2023
Review "My Dearest"

It's hard to say anything about the debut episode of this series without addressing the delightfully shameless ripoff/homage to Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel "Gone With the Wind." Yoo Gil-chae sparkles in an unabashed reenactment of Scarlett O'Hara at the Wilkes barbecue as, after the Flower Festival, she cuts a swath through the young men in attendance in an effort to catch the eye of Nam Yeon-joon. The other girls are furious as, one and all, the objects of their affections are reduced to stumbling, tongue-tied infatuation with Gil-chae, but, like Ashley Wilkes, Yeon-joon doesn't even notice, captivated as he is with Kyung Eun-ae.

In the next scene, as the men gather to brag about the superiority of the Ming Dynasty (with whom the Joseon Dynasty was allied) in defeating the barbarian forces (prompting Gil-chae to echo Scarlett's comments about how "boring" the talk of war is), an insouciant voice emerges from the crowd, politely bursting their bubble of braggadocio, just as Rhett Butler challenged the Southerners bragging that it would take only a matter of weeks to defeat the Yankees and end the war. The mystery man is Lee Jang-hyun, and his pointed inquiries are greeted with the same resentment as Rhett Butler's are in Mitchell's novel.

It will be interesting to see if this or other novels pop up in "My Dearest" as the series continues!

Why copy GWTW? No more new stories?
dstef_ro17 November 2023
Really not understand this. Kdrama doesn't need to import stories. It was.strange to discover that action was very similar with GWTW, so i searched on internet to find out the truth. I was at third episode so after i found out i was not happy. I saw also the movie and read the book, so what surprises can bring me this series? It's a bad ideea from the start. I cannot give a high score even the actors are good just because of this ideea to inspire from a great succes movie. You cannot do such a thing and pretend it's a good movie. Anyway, for those who doesn't know GWTW probably will be ok, but for me isn't.

Good Enough
PennyReviews18 October 2023
Korean Drama " My Dearest " is part one of the historical melodrama, following the lives of two tragic lovers that fate and their own mistakes keep them apart.

The drama starts off seemingly like every other historical romance, with some light moments, some comical sketches, and two leads that seem to be constantly fighting and loathing each other, even though, underneath it, there is an undeniable tension brewing. Soon, however, things take another turn. War breaks out and the characters come face to face with its ruthless reality. Hereafter, the story goes deeper and deeper into darker waters, with the drama hitting its pick towards the ending, when the characters have gone through a huge character development, and their stories coming together. The ending, even though its just the end of the first half, was just what the story needed to fully embrace the melodrama.

Moreover, the performances were masterful, by everyone in the cast, but especially the two main leads, whose chemistry was deliciously enjoyable.

So, overall, nine and a half out of ten.

Best Korean Drama 2023
lastra-0414731 December 2023
I watched and enjoyed different Koreans tv series in the past years but this one deserve more than 10 stars. Beautiful to watch in every detail, from the beginning until the end. I really loved the acting and the devote relationship between the main actors. I was captivated for the history and narrative along all the episodes and I couldn't stop watching. I am a man but I cried in different episodes of this serie. This is a sample that you don't need to use profanity or sexual immorality in a show to have a successful play. I hope there is a 2nd part of this story and I can not wait to see it.
