Remember This Is a FREE Movie
openbsd213 December 2012
Remember This is costing you Nothing to get and watch. For a Free to download movie I have to give credit to the makers and actors. You have to take in account that these are not professional actors but physicists! & it was made for under $2000! (REALLY?) And to be fully honest I've seen MUCH worse on the SCFI channel!!!! Watch it with an Open mind and its rather enjoyable some of the effects are pretty good too. The guys in it are certainly not what the public idea of physicists are, and im sure there will be plenty of girls out there routing for the high IQ (in real life) actors. The plot is in theory plausible, because of the unknown nature of the subject matter.....we simply don't know enough about it to dismiss it, very clever as expected. All in all We liked it thanks to everyone involved :)

Very Impressive For The Budget But Let Down By The Cast
Theo Robertson28 February 2013
This comes with a marketing buzz . Written and directed by a real life physicist Luke Thompson on a budget of £2,000 DECAY centres around the premise of things going wrong at the Haldron Collider in Switzerland . You know what the Haldron Collider is don't you ? That's the famous energy particle accelerator that made headlines a few years back when some scientists tried to block the experiments via a court order claiming it might destroy the world by creating a black hole fears which turned out to be unfounded . When a scientist who knows what he's talking about uses the topical intangible fears of science to create a premise for a film then that that film is surely worth tracking down isn't it ?

Thompson deserves great credit for getting off his backside and making a movie . While the vast majority of wannabe directors sit around and whine that no one recognises their undiscovered genius Luke Thompson has put his own money where his mouth is and produced on a shoestring budget a well shot , well edited film complete with convincing make up and a musical score that suits the film . Need I repeat that this only cost £2,000 ? Put it like this - every small group of film students must know several people who could raise a few hundred quid in return for a executive producers credit . This film proves there's no excuse for not making a low to no budget movie

There is a problem with having a minuscule budget and it's obvious what it is - the cast . No offence but they really are quite dreadful in their debut roles all of whom are appearing in a movie for the very first time . Imagine you're trapped in a building and rabid blood thirsty zombies are trying to eat you alive ? How would you react ? Yeah me too but the cast here more often than not give the impression that someone has just turned off their favourite TV show rather than having to fight for their lives against zombie hordes . It's also a rather vapid menace of zombies when the Hadron Collidor offers so much scope for potential monsters like aliens from another dimension or anti-matter men but I guess having a few extras with fake blood running around pretending to be the undead is far easier to realise on screen than more imaginative creations

I really did want to love DECAY and some of my expectations were meet and even exceeded from a technical film making point of view . One should perhaps be more forgiving towards the amateur cast but unfortunately they're a bit too amateur and it's interesting the film works much better in the second half when there's little dialogue hence the characters don't have to say any lines in a distracting , stilted manner . Perhaps Thompson should have invested just a little more money casting professional actors . As it stands the general consensus on this page is close but no cigar and I quite agree

Made by physicists at CERN? Forget the 4 out of 10 -- see it.
john-858-510485 February 2013
Remember this movie was made by physicists, not movie makers. The CERN backdrop adds a new dimension for zombie story that almost makes the idea of walking zombies plausible. Does the script drift at times, are there bad gaps in some areas, etc? Sure. But who cares. If you watched any made for SyFy movie there is a good chance this one is actually better than most of those. In fact, it would be great if this online distributed film could make the jump to cable with a home on SyFy. Despite the geeky nature of the premise it is still interesting enough for a much wider audience.

It will be very interesting to see if these PhD students find a career in science or in film -- or perhaps get lucky enough to continue what they seem to be doing here and somehow have both.

Decay: One of the most amateurish messes I've seen in months
Platypuschow12 November 2017
Decay is a British zombie film with a brilliant unique concept. Alas that is the single only thing it has going for it.

Telling the story of a group of young physicists who discover that an experiment has gone wrong and the underground tunnels have become bombarded with radiation while a team is down there. Before they know it they are besieged by its victims who have returned as the undead.

I liked the idea and initially I thought this might be something special.

Sadly it wasn't meant to be. This claustrophobic tale features some of the worst acting I've seen in a longtime, a laundry list of goofs including an actors hair length/style changing between scenes! How in the blue hell did they not resolve that? The zombies look terrible, the soundtrack is laughable and the whole thing became a chore to watch.

Still a step up from the likes of The Zombinator (2012) but not by much. If you want zombies go check out Train To Busan (2016) or Wyrmwood (2014)

The Good:

Great idea for the zombie outbreak

The Bad:

SFX are weak

Acting is dreadful

Laden with goofs and inconsistencies

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

I need to take a break from the zombie genre

Not that good really.
Michael-Hallows-Eve25 December 2012
This British movie is meant to be a good quality low budget zombie horror. But for me it fails badly. The acting is quite bad and the plot moves along quite slowly too. I do like some of the blood and zombie effects, but that is all I liked about the film. Now normally I don't mind a good indie horror movie but this was not as good, in fact nowhere near as good as it could have been. There's not much I can say about the film, yeah it may have been a good idea in the pitch process, and yeah they only spent two thousand pounds on it, but after seeing 'Colin' (another almost no budget Brit movie which only cost a reported 75 pounds) which was quite good, they could have done better in my opinion. So I give this movie a 2 out of 10 (because of the effects).

Almost but not quite
zink-paul16 February 2013
First, let me say that the cinematography and editing in this film were very decent quality: highly professional at first viewing. And the music score, while not groundbreaking, was more than suitable; again, professional quality. The effects were hit or miss, but largely well done, especially one long shot of a realistically gnawed prosthetic dead body.

That's it for the good points, now for the not-so-good. The acting is passable, if you don't mind face-twitching and arm waving to reveal emotional reactions. The dialog isn't great, but I've endured worse— although at times I was expecting to hear "dammit, Jim, I'm a Doctoral candidate, not a special forces commando!"

However, the big problem is the story line. Not the overall concept— it's a zombie movie so we all know what's going to happen, and being at the Large Hadron Collider in Cern, we know the plot is going to center around particle physics and the action will take place in the laboratories, offices and physical plant—which is interesting to see, by the way.

But the story line is predictable, vague in too many areas of detail, and doesn't give much idea as to who the main characters and what their jobs are. Also, too many scenes telegraph the impending action with a leaden heavy hand: lights dim and flicker out, putting parts of the set in darkness, then the lights flicker back on: OMG-scream-there's-a-zombie-right-in-your face!!! (Yawn…)

Various conventions of zombie — and generic action—movies are observed, but not in a consistent manner. As for the ending, there's a nicely conceived double twist, yet one that demands a more competent actor in the relevant role to make it satisfying.

Not Bad For A Very Low Budget Horror Flick
motter103613 October 2015
Many reviewers have really panned this movie. I guess they haven't watched too many episodes of MST3Ks. Some of those awful movies had much bigger budgets and some even name actors Granted this is not a great movie but any means The acting is pretty poor the plot has been done many times and it plods for about the 1st half But for a 1st time effort it shows promise the gory effects are very good. The movie does have some suspense too it and at about 75 minutes it does hold your attention Hopefully this 1st time director will have success in getting backing for a larger budget film with pro actors and then we may see how talented he really is

Not overly impressive...
paul_haakonsen29 December 2015
"Decay" is a movie that tries wholeheartedly, but fails to fully step up to the plate. Directors Luke Thompson and Michael Mazur had the best of interests but their ideas were killed by the classic zombie mistakes.

And those mistakes are of course bad zombie make-up, running zombies and bad acting. Yes, "Decay" made that far too-common mistake of having zombie make-up on the face, but forgetting about the neck and ears. It just looks ridiculously bad. The running zombies? No! Simply no. And as for the bad acting, well it was in particular Zoë Hatherell who dragged the movie down with her absentminded acting.

Oh, and the story is incredibly slow paced. You need to get 27 minutes into the movie before anything of any importance or interest happens. And even then it never mounts up to anything extraordinary.

The cast, most of them at least, were doing adequate jobs with their given roles and characters.

For a zombie movie then "Decay" fails to stand out and leave a lasting bitemark, pardon the pun. And as such, it just fades into the vast amount of less than mediocre zombie movies.

"Decay" is a weak addition to the British zombie catalogue. Nothing much to see here, and I would suggest that you get your zombie cravings sated elsewhere, because "Decay" is less than mediocre.

These are Real Scientists and Real Equipment, not actors on a set
alansiegman27 March 2016
What is the problem here? Any science nerd who doesn't get a thrill from this -- hey I'll even give a fast forward or two -- maybe isn't really a science nerd. No, not really Great Science Fiction? Maybe not but this is more about the setting and the 'realistic' physicists, than the plot and the production. Or I would have just skipped the movie and moved on and not whined about some student movie not impressing me like Avatar.

These are the people and equipment who actually DID discover the Higgs Boson, which made the entire physics Standard Model that has come out of relativity and quantum mechanics complete with its greatest confirmation ever!!! That was the culmination of 100 years of specific work on that model! The work done by these scientists and students at that lab -- NOT their movie production ability -- has become a meme that has been the subject of jokes for years. What nerd doesn't want ANY GLIMPSE of that actual accelerator which cost $13 BILLION dollars (so they can make a $2000 movie and show us the guts and their playing around in them???

By contrast, not a single bit of String Theory has been backed up experimentally, regardless of how much you may like Michio Kaku. ;)

I am a physics nerd, I took extra-bonus physics during my undergrad (electrical engineering) degree in the late 70's, back when Trekkies were all about Captain Kirk and i was more anti-Trekky then ... then around 1990 when working on my MSEE I took more physics, and I've used relativity both in my academic work and in my job in Bell Labs and Boeing Military.

Now I've gone back to school at Wichita State University, so that I can learn what's new in physics. That's where I heard about this film. Our instructor was an experimental physicist at Fermilab in Illinois, which I then visited a few weeks ago. He knows some of these people personally, and the other day I brought in DVD's I got from Fermilab to give out to the classmates, and they mentioned this film Decay. It isn't intended to be Great Art for the Snobbery Critics; it's some actual nerds doing actual nerd imagination things at the most expensive nerd toy on the planet!!!

REAL nerds will get what I mean, and were just waiting for this chance to pop up! Those who pointed this was a free film and it was with real stuff so that's a cool factor, thank you.

Good premise, awful execution.
Michael_Takes7 June 2014
It could have been great. Im sure MANY people are interested in the God particle and the LHC, however the subject matter is nothing more then the means of making a small and VERY cheap 28 Days Later.

The acting is bloody awful. Of the 6 main cast members only 2 seem to be able to show emotion, the rest are practically reading off the page. The setting is obviously not at CERN. I have been to university and work security at a hospital and would bet money that the above ground CERN footage was shot at a university and the underground footage at the basement/ service/ car park/ and any linking tunnels of a hospital.

One good thing though..... if the LHC were to f#$% up it we now know it wont destroy the world with a black hole, just create fast zombies. RELIEF!!!

a thinking persons zombie flick
dadatuuexx17 December 2012
Well, If you have a chance to catch this film, and have a bit of time, check it out.If you like a movie that inspires thought, you,ll most likely think its decent. However,if your into zombie flicks that have lots of cool effects, lots of the red stuff, action, and big names, please move on to the next Resident Evil installment.First of all,as i said before, this movie will get you thinking about science gone astray, and mankind opening doors that should be left closed,AND locked !. The super colliders that those evil white-coats have been working on(atom smashers to us non-involved) are fairly known to most these days, yet little is known about the down-side of one that go,s wrong. It has been said that if one fails,it most likely will create an artificial black hole,or throw the planet of its gravitational poles.yes, that,s what i said, and i,m not joking.the cast does a good job,and the camera work is fair.Nothing wild, just o.k. .There,s a bit of gore, and for what was spent on making this movie,i think they deserve a thumbs up.For myself, its sort of fizzled out at the end,but ,hey, what the heck, its a zombie movie ! Watch it with an open mind, and remember, some things are best left alone, and should,nt be messed with.Personally,i think atom-smashing is a HUGE waste of money, and time.Very dangerous, and what good is it anyway.

WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE (good things)
drugaddictsinthejungle18 August 2013
First off, you need to know that Dadatuuexx has no idea what he's talking about to a worrying degree, in fact he appears to be personifying the same ignorance and fear of science that Decay (clever title - both people and particles decay - geddit?) is attempting to satirise in the first place. "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should" and all that nonsense. The LHC, stem cell research, Bruce Banner, Mary Shelley, it's been going on forever. What it comes down to is ignorance versus rationality and I know which side I'd rather be on. But then again this is a zombie film, and obviously zombies aren't real, couldn't be real. Bad science and THE BEST science coexist here and the contrast is I think intentionally obvious, the effect of which highlights just how silly all the death-by-a-thousand-black-holes and similar theories patently are. But people do believe them, and that's a problem.

But anyway, that's about the extent of the satire as far as I can tell. The next thing I need to mention is the filmmakers could not have wished for a better location. The LHC is incredibly impressive to look at, and we see more of it here than I've seen in any of the documentaries about it. Not only does it look amazing, and it's HUEG, but the weight of its importance, and the genius not only of its architecture but of what it does, is constant, it makes you proud to be a human in the 21st century. Atmospheric.

The acting is - not always - but sometimes - a bit dodgy, and a few scenes lack the emotional depth and sense of urgency they could have done with. But these are physicists, not actors, and anyway what's cooler, pretending to be someone else for an hour or FINDING OUT HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS? (The clue's in the caps.) A scientist would deck an actor nine times out of ten.

Okay okay, actually, yes they're physicists, which would make you think they'd get the physics of a pipe through a skull or a hand through an abdomen a bit more...right. Both these things were done with seemingly little effort and no resistance (but the technique they use is potentially a smart one). Also the state of severed limbs and stuff like that reminds you that they're not biologists. Which is a slight shame, but it's still nice to see a pipe going through a skull and a hand going through an abdomen. And severed limbs.

We spend quite a lot of time looking at computer screens, and it would be nice if one day we'll get a proper representation of what a computer screen actually looks like in situations like this - but saying that, it was a lot better than we've come to expect. Yes there's green-text-on-black-background flashing around for no reason, text bleeps as it's displayed (that would be my vote for the main thing to sort out, the first thing I do when I install a new OS is to stop it making annoying noises unless I tell it to), and on one occasion a character's username flashes for no other reason than to tell us to look at it. But it's fine, they're using Bash v3.95 Beta and I'm using v4.2.45 and I don't even have an LHC so I'm happy. The joys of the fourth dimension.

They made the right choice leaving it at 75 minutes, it may have started to wear its welcome by the 90-minute mark, but overall I really enjoyed the film, I watched most of it with a smile on my face, so well done, you lot, seriously.

not just another zombie movie
suzanne-knight221 December 2012
As another reviewer said, its free to download and there is much worse on the Scifi channel! I came across it by accident while looking at a news article about something completely unrelated and found the whole idea of a movie made by physicists working with the LHC intriguing, so downloaded it. You have to keep in mind that this was an amateur production and as such is excellent quality, well edited, and a cool plot. The zombie theme may have been done many times over, but not like this.Despite the zombie theme it does have an air of realism to it, and its amazing to see the tunnel complex of the LHC which the general public do not get to see. I found it amusing and enjoyable to watch, and at no point did I think 'what a waste of time' and turn off as I have with so many other films, most of which fail to engage in the first ten minutes. Not so here - give it a chance - ten minutes in you will be hooked. Shaun of the Dead fans look out for the reference in the freezer at the start...

decay sucks its own balls
randjelovic14 October 2014
Really, really bad. It's not bad in that classy style that can sometimes happen to the low budget horror movies. In that particular piece everything simply SUCKS. I'm disappointed, I wasted my time and... You know. P.S. I saw that director and screenwriter is a real scientist (. That's cool. Dude, stay in science, get Nobel prize or something. You are an awful movie maker. Send yourself into the black hole, that would be awesome, but movies are just not your thing.

Not That Bad All Things Considered
Uriah4329 June 2021
This film involves five young scientists who work at the super collider facility in Switzerland and have the unlucky fortune to be given an assignment which involves staying in the control room while repairs are taking place. The problem is that the repairs were the result of sabotage and the person responsible for it intends to create even further mischief. So when the power to the station is unexpectedly turned on it not only kills the people working on repairs within the tunnels of the super collider but also threatens the health of the five young scientists in the control room. So recognizing that they need to evacuate, they immediately look for an exit through those same tunnels. But what they don't know is that the radiation has turned the dead repairmen into flesh-eating zombies and that they just happen to be on a direct collision course with them. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that for a low-budget zombie film this turned out to be better than I initially expected. Admittedly, the acting was second-rate but even so the action scenes were decent enough and the actual location worked to the films advantage as well. That said, while this certainly wasn't a great movie by any means, I didn't think it was that bad all things considered and I have rated it accordingly. Average.

Low budget. It shows, but still succeeds.
harry-d-mcmahon2 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Shot on a minuscule budget, this is a zombie chase movie, set in the bowels of CERN, Switzerland. To my knowledge, all of the cast are physicists as opposed to actors, so you have to excuse the somewhat leaden delivery of lines and expressions. The zombie makeup is OK, £2000 doesn't buy a lot of latex and fake blood. So, a group of 5 student types have to survive an accident with the reactor, which causes a maintenance team to be transformed into zombies. There is a subplot about the Higgs particle having a detrimental effect on human tissue, which leads a mysterious person to sabotage the reactor, causing the accident in the first place. The editing is largely very good, the direction is OK to good, and you get to have a look at miles and miles of dark, pipe filled corridors at the CERN complex. As the group inevitably get whittled down, leaving one survivor to figure it out and try to get help. It's worth a look, even if it is to inspire potential novice film makers to get off their backsides and have a go.

more annoying than entertaining
nursingservicesontario2 January 2013
Stressfully dumb. Never seen anything this lame. Its such a slow movie not sure if its the directing or the actors just sucked. Good storyline but totally boring acting and direction too slow, and lacking logic. The girl who is supposed to be the main actor looked like she was already bitten before she actually was. Not sure what her qualities were other than being blonde. Totally didn't look sharp at one point one of her friends is bitten and then she runs off and stays in a corner while her friend gets devoured, totally lacking logic. and whatever those things were they moved faster than the ones that were not infected. I say this is a case of more money and time than brains. If you wanna be stressed out watch this. I wanna punch whoever directed this. Whoever directed this trying using your brain. Logically if there is any kinda danger ppl don't react like that. that was very annoying. Try writing and directing for smart people with a brain. This didn't make any sense.
