Surely you have seen Shutter Island or Gone Girl – these are classic thrillers that have been recognized by both viewers and critics. However, the genre is full of projects that have gone unnoticed – and undeservedly so, as there are real gems among them that are better than many big-budget films.
1. Coherence, 2013
James Ward Byrkit's Coherence is one of those movies made on a dime that can outshine big commercial blockbusters. There are no spectacular special effects, but Coherence has something better: a really unusual and, most importantly, scientifically accurate idea about traveling to parallel realities.
The plot revolves around a group of friends who are affected by Miller's comet, which unexpectedly approaches Earth. Byrkit, who is best known for his theatrical work, decided not to shoot the film according to script, but instead allowed his actors to improvise – most of Coherence is based on dialogues that were literally born in the moment.

Fresh from Panic Fest 2024, The Ceremony is About to Begin unwraps itself like a meticulously preserved mummy, serving up a fresh twist on the horror mockumentary scene. Directed by Sean Nichols Lynch, this found footage film cleverly marries the allure of ancient Egyptian rituals with the chilling uncertainty of cult dynamics, all captured through a ‘documentary’ lens.

During her Celebration Tour in Atlanta, Madonna named the producer she was enamored with in 1994 when she recorded her album Bedtime Stories.
In between her songs, Madonna, 65, gave audiences a peek into her past romances. The singer claimed she was “madly in love with him” despite him treating her like “s—.” One fan posted a video of the confession to X, captioned, “Madonna spilling hot tea.”
“I’m just saying, you did, you dogged me, bro,” Madonna said. “It’s ok, I understand. You were just a boy. But I hope you’ve grown up by now.”

Head inside to watch the biggest moments from Ariana Grande’s SNL appearance…
Ariana referenced her newly released music video while performing new single “we can’t be friends (wait for your love).” She returned to the stage following an introduction from her mom Joan to round out her night with “imperfect for you.” She sang the delicate ballad amid a field that could have come straight from Oz.

Ariana Grande and Bowen Young could not keep it together during a sketch on Saturday Night Live tonight.
The pair brought to life songs that did not make it into the hit film Moulin Rouge which included “Up Where We Belong,” originally sung by Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker; “Do-Re-Mi” by Julie Andrews; “Creep” by TLC; “Happy Birthday”; and “Pride (In the Name of Love)” by U2 among others.
While they made it nearly all the way through the sketch before breaking character, Yang began to lose focus while performing Shania Twain’s hit song “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” He continued to have a fit of giggles as he and Grande sang “Happy Birthday” for the umpteenth time leading the latter also to break character. It only gets worse when the comedian dips the singer and attempts to sing “I Will Always Love You,” written by Dolly Parton...

Ariana Grande wasn’t just the musical guest during the March 9 episode of “Saturday Night Live.” While she took the stage to perform two songs from “Eternal Sunshine,” her just-released sixth album, “We Can’t Be Friends” and “Imperfect For You” — and was introduced by her mom, Joan Grande, for the second number — she also took on two different sketches.
After appearing as a patient in a group therapy session during the first half of the show, she was invited back to the stage later on in the night for a “Moulin Rouge” spoof, giving her the opportunity to sing covers of multiple hit songs.
The sketch created a PBS special, hosted by Mikey Day, taking a look at what the “Elephant Love Medley” would have looked like had director Baz Luhrmann known they’d be able to get the rights to other love songs; Bowen Yang and Grande played Christian and Satine,...

Found footage horror films have masterfully burrowed their way into the heart of the horror genre, compelling us to peek between our fingers at the screen as they blur the line between fiction and unnerving reality, whispering, “Could this actually happen?” With their handheld chaos and too-close-for-comfort storytelling, these cinematic gems have redefined what it means to be truly scared, proving that sometimes, the most terrifying monsters are those that feel like they could be lurking just outside our windows. Robert Alvarez and Adrian Rivas both started playing their respective instruments — guitar and drums — at the age of 12. They shared a love of rock, especially the heavier kind, like grunge and metal. And, years later, each received the same devastating medical diagnosis: a brain tumor.
Rivas and Alvarez hadn’t met by the time they were individually considering treatment options. But their common experience would lead them to play music together under very special circumstances.
Alvarez was in high school when he began to suffer debilitating migraines, he tells Rolling Stone.

Singer-songwriter Melanie, best known for performing at Woodstock and her No. 1 hit “Brand New Key,” has died at 76 years old.
Melanie’s children — Leilah, Jeordie and Beau Jarred — announced the news on Wednesday with a post on her official Facebook page. The cause of death is currently unknown.
“Mom passed, peacefully, out of this world and into the next on January, 23rd, 2024,” reads the statement. “We are heartbroken, but want to thank each and every one of you for the affection you have for our Mother, and to tell you that she loved all of you so much! She was one of the most talented, strong and passionate women of the era and every word she wrote, every note she sang reflected that. Our world is much dimmer, the colors of a dreary, rainy Tennessee pale with her absence today, but we know that she is still here, smiling down on all of us,...

The big surprise on the runway of Yohji Yamamoto’s Fall Winter 2024 men’s collection in Paris was the appearance of Wim Wenders. The 78-year-old German filmmaker, currently enjoying box office success in Europe with Perfect Days, walked the runway wearing classic pieces in the fashion house’s style of layering and varying lengths.
Yamamoto’s connection to Wenders dates back to 1989, when the director of Wings of Desire made a documentary about the founder of the Japanese brand called Notebook on Cities and Clothes.
“We became close like brothers a long time ago. We share the same memory from when we were very young — the Tokyo and Berlin bombings,” the fashion designer stressed backstage at the event inside Yamamoto’s European headquarters on Rue Saint-Martin, in the heart of Les Halles.
The soundtrack featured famous songs such as Radiohead’s “Creep,” Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” and Johnny Cash’s “The Little Drummer Boy,...

I adore found footage movies. From the claustrophobic visuals to filmmakers ingeniously extracting tension from miniscule budgets – nothing gets my blood pumping like some quality epistolary filmmaking. However, after seeing so many of these films, I have no problem admitting that the sub-genre as a whole has a huge characterization problem. After all, Pov storytelling and realistic dialogue make it extremely difficult to really get to know our main characters before shit hits the proverbial fan.
That’s why we’ve come to expect found footage flicks to focus more on plot than characters, as dramatic heart-to-heart conversations aren’t as common in “real” recordings as they are in the hyper-reality of narrative film. Fortunately, some of the more talented filmmakers out there have managed to work within these limitations and still come up with memorable character interactions, with the best example of this being Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass’ experimental classic,...

Found in your local “Shower After Watching” section of the suspicious flea market around the corner is 1993’s Skinner. And it’s probably the only movie in that bin to feature an acting performance from daytime talk show host Ricki Lake. Seriously.

“You never know if they like you for who you are or what you are,” Anna Nicole Smith once said before she passed away from an accidental drug overdose in 2007. The endearing model, actress, and television personality often found herself a subject of misinterpretation and ridicule when she wanted to taste life, be loved, and make people smile. A first look at Sylvia Hoeks as Smith is here, prompting fans to double-take before venturing into the Uncanny Valley.

When in Hobbiton, do as the elves do. Lizzo recently stopped by the New Zealand attraction — best known as a major filming location for the Lord of the Rings franchise — and made the most of the occasion, cosplaying Legolas and performing the film’s soundtrack.

She topped it all off by trading in her flute for a recorder to perform Howard Shore’s “Concerning Hobbits.” Watch it below.
Lizzo has just a couple of international dates left on her headlining tour, and you can grab tickets at StubHub. Then, she’s set to headline Philadelphia’s Made in America festival this September. She also recently belted Radiohead’s “Creep” while out at karaoke.

The Cloverfield episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Joseph Wilson, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The Blair Witch Project, Wolf Creek, V/H/S, The House that October Built, Creep, Troll Hunter, Paranormal Activity… Like all good found footage films, Cloverfield (watch it Here) seemed to come out of left field, suddenly going from having never been heard of to having the biggest buzz around it and making about 7 times its budget at the box office. So, how did that happen? What is it that took this one and elevated it beyond some of the older titles in the sub-genre. How did this one catch the attention of the public and make so much money it got two sequels to date?
How did Cloverfield become a hit, what set it apart from the rest?...

How did this one catch the attention of the public and make so much money it got two sequels to date?
How did Cloverfield become a hit, what set it apart from the rest?...

Lizzo, a documented fan of Radiohead and regular performer of unexpected covers, flexed her pipes by singing the band’s hit “Creep” during a recent night out at karaoke.
The “About Damn Time” singer shared a brief clip of her “Creep” rendition in a carousel post on Instagram Tuesday night, along with a caption that raised a rhetorical — albeit important — question: “What does Lizzo do after her shows?” Why, sing one of the biggest alt-radio hits of the ’90s, of course. (While donning baggy jeans and a t-shirt to suit the occasion.)
But Lizzo hasn’t always made her love for Radiohead so apparent. In a Vanity Fair cover story last fall, she explained she felt the need to keep her more rock-leaning music taste “hidden” from her friends at her predominantly Black school growing up.

TLC is one of the greatest girl groups in history. The Atlanta-based trio, made up of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, rose to stardom during the 1990s after releasing their platinum debut single, "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg," which received a 1993 Grammy nomination for best R&b song. Following their initial success, TLC sent nine of their singles to the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart - four of which went No. 1: "Creep," "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs," and "Unpretty."
Now, more than three decades since the group first made their mark, Watkins and Thomas are looking back at their prolific careers with the release of their new Lifetime documentary, "TLC Forever," which premieres on June 3. According to the documentary's official description, "TLC Forever" will not only touch on the group's historic success but their biggest downfalls as well, including "internal fallouts,...

TLC wouldn’t be complete without Rozanda ‘Chilli’ Thomas, but there was once a time when she almost wasn’t in the equation.
In an exclusive interview with People, the soulful songstress, 52, candidly remembers the group’s formation while discussing Lifetime’s upcoming documentary on the generation-defining group, “TLC Forever”.

However, Chilli didn’t always hold a prominent position in the group, and surprisingly to some, she was almost kicked out of the group.

Those who have seen “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” can rest assured that musician Florence Welch also cried throughout the film, especially when she watched the segment set to her hit song “Dog Days.”
The singer of Florence + the Machine posted a TikTok of her reaction to the part in the film where the song starts playing. She was already tearful, but she cried some more tears of joy.
“So I cried all the way through this movie but when The Guardians of the Galaxy started dancing to ‘Dog Days’ I really lost it,” she wrote. “Thank you so much for all the love for this moment. The superhero obsessed little girl in me can’t believe it happened.”

"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn is a music connoisseur and personally selects the film's soundtracks. These needle drops blur the line of diegesis; Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) owns a Walkman (and later a Zune) and the songs in the first two movies are all from mixtapes gifted to him by his mother. "Guardians of the Galaxy" introduced us to the adult Quill by having him dance around the barren planet Morag, listening to "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone — perfectly capturing both Star-Lord's space cowboy persona and the film's retro musical taste.
Speaking to Absolute Radio, Gunn said he picks songs not because they're his personal favorites but because they fit the movie. "Vol. 2" features "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac, and the song's refrain of "keep us togethe," reflects the struggles of the Guardians to stay together despite their own flaws pushing them apart.

Some mild Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spoilers follow.
Once again, director and writer James Gunn has added another unique dimension to one of his films, with the perfectly curated batch of oddball tunes that populate the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack. And yes, once again, these tracks are presented as things being listened to by the characters during the events of the film, dropped in increasingly inventive, energizing, and even heartbreaking fashion at the appropriate moments.
Sure, things have changed a little bit, with the songs no longer being tied to any specific era, and being played as an assortment of tunes that had been uploaded onto a Zune MP3 player of all things, but they still hit just as hard, loud, and unexpectedly as they ever have. So if you’re ready to groove like your favorite bunch of interstellar misfits, here’s how you can do it.

Ready for the farewell tour?
The marketing campaign for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” savvily cooked up by the Marvel Studios and Disney teams, has positioned it as the last hurrah for the team that formed in 2014 with the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” and who have endured for two sequels, appearances in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” as well as “Thor: Love and Thunder” and their very own seasonal celebration, 2022’s “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.” (They also have theme park attractions at Disney’s California Adventure in California and Epcot at Walt Disney World in Florida.)
Now that the final installment is here, we thought we’d break down what happens at the end of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and its implications for the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (or is it Multiverse?)

The whole thing felt like a glorious fluke from the get-go. Never mind all those top-tier, name-recognized Marvel superheroes that were being trotted out in the name of establishing a multimedia, cross-branded empire. Let’s spend a lot of money on an obscure late ’60s comic-book title, using characters from its 2008 reboot run, and make that a franchise. We’ll give it to the guy who used to make Troma films. Cast the Parks & Rec doofus as the lead. It’ll be perfect for filling time between Avengers movies.

There’s a sense of an ending in part three of the Guardians trilogy, but not in the sense of the franchise actually, you know, coming to an end. Like almost all Marvel movies these days, it presents a continuum, giving all the main players an out while leaving the door wide open to a fourth iteration should they have a change of heart. From the evidence here, that’s entirely possible — there’s no sign of burnout in the adventures of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and co. However, there are signs of wear and tear in the conventions of the series: once its most refreshing aspect, the mixtape soundtrack seems more of a burden now, having long abandoned the conceit of the original C90.

Cinematic superheroes have been going through a rough patch lately. Already this year, both Shazam and Ant-Man proved a bit at sea in their latest adventures. So it comes as a relief to report the trilogy-capping Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. achieves what it sets out to do, which is provide a stirring and audience-pleasing finale for a franchise that has proven to be one of Marvel’s biggest and most unlikely success stories. Well, at least until the next iteration of the Guardians comes along.
Arriving six years after the last installment (an eon in superhero years), this edition begins in startling fashion. The “Mia” rapper put something on one of his albums that may have been ill-advised. His vulnerable approach to lyrics and production may have hit too close to home for someone who used to be a big part of his life. The hit on his bank account might be far more than he ever thought possible.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is set to abandon one of the franchise’s most popular traditions.
The film, directed by James Gunn, follows on from the first two Guardians films, as well as other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) entries such as Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022).
Released in 2014, the first Guardians of the Galaxy was a smash hit for Marvel, and drew particular praise from fans for its infectious jukebox soundtrack.

In the film, music is played from a mixtape given to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) by his late mother.

Remember Asgardians of the Galaxy? No, not the pretty okay comic series that spun out of the Thor-centric Marvel event War of the Realms. We mean the MCU team set up at the end of Avengers: Endgame, which seemed to suggest that Thor would be joining Peter Quill and co. to go on ribald space adventures.
Thor’s time with the Guardians was a big part of the advertising of Thor: Love and Thunder, but the movie quickly discarded the heroes to set the god of thunder on his own adventure. Some people may have been disappointed by this missed opportunity, but not James Gunn.
“What the fuck am I gonna do?” Gunn asked himself after seeing Thor join the Guardians at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Talking to Rolling Stone, Gunn recalled the panic he felt when he realized that his plans for the third and final Guardians of the Galaxy...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t be out in theaters for another month, but writer/director James Gunn has already revealed the official soundtrack. Ahead of its release on CD and digital download on May 3rd, you can stream it now via Apple Music or Spotify below.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn explained why an acoustic version of Radiohead’s “Creep” sets the tone for the film. “It doesn’t start with ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ [like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2],” he said. “It doesn’t start with ‘Come and Get Your Love’ [like the first movie]. It starts with Radiohead’s acoustic version of ‘Creep.’ And that’s just a much different tone from the beginning than the other two films.”
Besides Radiohead, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack features Florence + The Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Badlands,” Heart’s “Crazy on You,” Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn,...

The Guardians of the Galaxy haven't said their big goodbyes yet, but if you want to get a sense for how emotional the third volume of Marvel's plucky underdog series could get, look no further than the just-released Spotify playlist featuring songs from "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3." Writer-director James Gunn shared a link to "Guardians of the Galaxy: The Official Mixtape" on Twitter today, along with a retro-looking poster that includes the tracklist for the soundtrack.
"The #GotGVol3 soundtrack is now live," Gunn tweeted. "Listen to the music before seeing the film in theaters on May 5." While the Spotify mix appears to include songs from all three "Guardians" films, including Electric Light Orchestra's "Mr. Blue Sky" and Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around And Fell in Love," it also features all the major tracks we've yet to hear in the space-set action comedy franchise. The complete tracklist for the...

The first sign that May 5’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will have a darker feel than its oft-comedic predecessors arrives immediately, with a musical choice. “It doesn’t start with ‘Mr. Blue Sky,'” says writer-director James Gunn, who’s already conjured two blockbusters out of an intergalactic-outcast saga starring characters even many hardcore Marvel fans barely knew. “It doesn’t start with ‘Come and Get Your Love.’ It starts with Radiohead’s acoustic version of ‘Creep.’ And that’s just a much different tone from the beginning than the other two films.

Two highly-anticipated comedy series are hitting streaming platforms this week, the excruciatingly relatable "Beef" on Netflix and the musical prequel series, "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies" on Paramount+. Meanwhile, there are films like "The Drop" and "Mayhem" available to stream that might help viewers get ready for a series like "Beef." Both flicks are exclusive to their prospective streaming platforms, so hopefully you've got Hulu and Shudder in addition to Netflix. There's also the Netflix series "Julie and the Phantoms" and the oft-forgotten "Grease 2" on Paramount+ to serve as the perfect companion pieces to "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies." Last-up, there's also the Prime Video series "Paper Girls" which manages to capture the girl-power energy of the new prequel series while boasting a stand-out performance by one of the stars of "Beef."
