I have seen Drag Den events on the streets of Manila many times; the best ones were done in public, supported by the local government, bringing the art of Drag to kids, and to their family and friends.
The show highlights actual gay experiences as it discusses financial/economic struggles, rejected friends and families, the toxicity of our own relationships amongst our own queer circles, and current Filipino politics. On the brightside, it's also about the small wins of overcoming these struggles, not only manifested in performance, but can be as simple as being out and proud, living one's truth that is rooted in Filipino history and culture.
I have come to realize that my insecurities are normal, and that I'm not alone in this journey of liberating myself from my own attachments to norms and expectations of others.
