Director John Stevenson has had a fascinating working trajectory. From his early-career days in the 1980s working as a story artist on Jim Henson productions Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and The Great Muppet Caper, through to his 2008 Oscar-nominated directorial debut Kung Fu Panda, Stevenson has had his hands in many major studio projects. This makes his latest BAFTA nominated film Middle Watch all the more interesting, as it sees Stevenson return to a more concise and small-scale form of storytelling. The short film, which was made in collaboration with Falmouth University, follows a sailor in the latter days of World War II who finds himself trying to protect his delicate state of mind when he’s thrust in the presence of something extraordinary. Ahead of this year’s BAFTA ceremony, Dn joined Stevenson for an in-depth conversation that covered everything from the lessons he’s learned over his extensive career...

Ooo, so what’s this “new era” coming for the denizens of Downton Abbey, 1920s-Yorkshire’s nicest feudal hangover? I never truly thought it would be the guillotines my reading of the prequel had inspired in my imagination, though a girl’s gotta dream. But it would not be anachronistic to hope for the Great Depression hitting the Earl of Grantham’s interests hard. Or perhaps soak-the-rich taxation has finally come for Downton, forcing them to open the house to *gasp* paying visitors?
Alas, that last is the closest to comeuppance that will descend upon the sprawling Crawley family and their impossibly happy-with-their-station servants. In the mildest sort of meta one could hope for from this franchise, the moving pictures have come to Downton Abbey! Film director Jack Barber and stars Guy Dexter and Myrna Dalgleish are making a glamorous romantic drama and they need a grand house for the shoot.

Henry Cavill Isn’t Surprised Netflix Is Being Sued For Making Sherlock Too Emotional In Enola Holmes
A frothy, all-ages mystery caper hardly seems like the type of movie that would find itself the subject of legal action, but the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have filed a lawsuit against Netflix’s Enola Holmes regardless. While the majority of Sherlock Holmes stories are in the public domain and can thusly be adapted by anyone any way they see fit, a handful of tales remain with the author’s estate, and they’ve decided that Henry Cavill’s take on the literary icon is far too emotional for their liking.
The lawsuit doesn’t really seem to hold much water, especially when there are countless other adaptations that have put almost unrecognizable spins on Sherlock, including Will Ferrell as a bumbling idiot in Holmes & Watson, Johnny Depp as a gnome in Sherlock Gnomes, animated series Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century and Michael Caine as a...

A Cinema Retro Exclusive: director John Stevenson provides an exclusive interview with Midge Costin, director of the acclaimed new film "Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound".
Working on the sound was the most fun part of the two animated feature films I have directed. One of the nicest gifts you get as a director, after working on your film for years, is being able to see your film fresh again once the sound designers and composer have added a whole new dimension to the story. So I was very excited to see Midge Costin's new documentary "Making Waves: The Art Of Cinematic Sound" and have a chance to talk to her about this vital, but often overlooked aspect of movie making. Here come the Men in Black, but not the ones that you remember. F. Gary Gray’s “Men in Black: International,” a sequel/spin-off to the blockbuster franchise about human bureaucrats managing interstellar immigration services on Earth, has a whole new cast, a whole new style — and no new ideas.

Half the movie was straightforward exposition, but it was funny exposition so nobody cared. Eccentric and clever, and steadfastly refusing to indulge in an action sequence whenever a quirky conversation would do, the film was a rare beacon of wit in a wasteland of otherwise brainless spectacles.

No film has ever dominated business on its second weekend as much as Marvel/Disney’s “Avengers: Endgame.” After a staggering 89% share on weekend one –notching an all-time record $357 million domestic gross — “Endgame” came roaring back with a sophomore weekend initial estimate of $146 million.
That marked an astonishing 74% of the weekend’s total gross, even with a 59% drop from last weekend and three new wide releases (no other studio film bothered to open against the Marvel onslaught last week). For a film making a full-on assault on records (some of which don’t need pretending constancy in ticket prices), this is one of its most impressive yet. That’s the best second weekend share ever.
This “Endgame” gross did not set the biggest second weekend record. With adjusted numbers, that remains “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $154.5 million ($149 million in 2015 dollars). But that movie boasted the best possible date for...

This “Endgame” gross did not set the biggest second weekend record. With adjusted numbers, that remains “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $154.5 million ($149 million in 2015 dollars). But that movie boasted the best possible date for...

Records continue to fall as Disney's Avengers: Endgame makes ready for its sophomore frame. After having already topped $452 million domestically (#17 all-time) and $1.664 billion worldwide (#6 all-time), the film enters its second weekend looking to top Star Wars: The Force Awakens's $149.2 million second weekend and add that record to its list of achievements. Beyond that, the film will top $600 million domestically this weekend and has a shot at outperforming 2012's The Avengers, which brought in $623.4 million after 154 days in release — Endgame is looking to do push past that number in just ten. As already mentioned, Star Wars: The Force Awakens currently holds the record for the largest second weekend of all-time with $149.2 million. While Avengers: Endgame destroyed Force Awakens's opening weekend by more than $100 million, Force Awakens dipped just -40% in its sophomore frame. Don't look for Endgame to follow suit, but given the sheer size of Endgame's debut, the second...

This weekend sees four new wide releases hitting theaters, though it will be WB's Shazam! enjoying a second go round as the weekend's number one film. As for the week's new releases, look for Hellboy and Little in what could be a tight race for runner-up position, while Laika's latest, Missing Link, vies for a spot in the top five and Aviron's After settles near the bottom of the top ten. After a solid start last weekend, which saw Shazam! exceed industry expectations, the superhero feature is likely to take a bit of a dive this weekend, though should remain in the top spot barring an over performance from a couple of the weekend's newcomers. We're currently anticipating a -58% dip for a three-day around $22.5 million and a ~$92 million domestic cume by the end of the weekend. Second place could be a tight race between Lionsgate's R-rated adaptation...

“Captain Marvel” continued its dominance with a $69 million second weekend. The 55 percent second weekend drop is on par with the most recent “Avengers” and “Thor” entries; by contrast, “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther” each dropped about 44 percent in their second outings.
Of all moviegoers this week, about half went to see “Captain Marvel.” That left the total gross, which will end up somewhat above $140 million, about $10 million above the same weekend last year. That’s two up weekends in a row after a long string of inferior three-day totals. That brings the year-to-date drop to just under 19 percent, with a total take lagging by about $460 million from where things stood in 2018.
The domestic take so far for the Brie Larson starrer is up to $266 million 10 days in, with over $400 million (about where “Wonder Woman” ended up) looking certain. The foreign take of $494 million brings worldwide to $760 million. That makes the...

“Wonder Park,” an animated family film from Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies, earned $700,000 in its Thursday box office previews from 2,620 screens. It opens on approximately 3,800 screens this weekend.
Paramount is looking at an opening weekend between $10-$14 million for the children’s fantasy tale, but it is of course contending with “Captain Marvel” in what is expected to be an especially strong second weekend for the Marvel superhero film. “Wonder Park” is tracking similarly to Paramount’s “Sherlock Gnomes,” which opened in March last year to just $10.6 million on a $59 million budget.
“Captain Marvel” meanwhile grossed an additional $9.1 million domestically on Thursday, bringing its domestic total to $196.8 million. It also made an additional $16.1 million internationally on Thursday, bringing its overall global total to $575.5 million.

After last weekend saw the weekend box office top the same weekend in 2018 for the first time all year, this weekend looks as if it is going to be tight on that front. Disney and Marvel's Captain Marvel is certain to top the weekend yet again as it pushes over $260 million domestically in just ten days while Paramount debuts the animated feature Wonder Park, Lionsgate and CBS release Five Feet Apart and Focus releases the near-future thriller Captive State. Also looking at a top ten finish is Lionsgate's release of No Manches Frida 2, the sequel to the 2016 feature that debuted with over $3.6 million from just 362 locations. At the top for a second weekend in a row will be Disney's release of Marvel's Captain Marvel, which debuted with a strong $153.4 million last weekend and has been pacing relatively similarly to The Hunger Games since release. With a $153 million opening domestically and $455 million worldwide, “Captain Marvel” is certain to be one of the fastest films to gross $1 billion at the box office. But exactly how fast will depend on whether it can hold as well in its second weekend as inclusive superhero films like “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther.”
While both of those films had very different openings than “Captain Marvel” — “Wonder Woman” opened to $103 million while “Black Panther” opened to $202 million — both notably kept their second weekend drop-offs below 50 percent. Strong word of mouth, combined with the cultural weight those films had, resulting in Marvel and DC fans returning to theaters to see again and again, making them both huge hits.

The “winners” of the 39th annual Razzies have been announced, and “Holmes & Watson” has the dubious honor of being named Worst Picture. The 2019 Golden Raspberry Awards were announced right before the stroke of midnight on Friday night, February 22. These 39th annual awards, “honoring” the worst achievements in film, were decided by more than 1,000 eligible voting members across all 50 states and two dozen foreign countries, while the Razzie Redeemer Award was chosen by registered users right here at Gold Derby. So who were the big winners — or losers, if you will? Watch the complete Razzies announcement video above, and scroll down to see the complete list of nominees and winners below.

It’s been nearly three decades since past Razzie Award winner Donald Trump competed at Hollywood’s kudos for Worst of the Year, but now he has two new chances for more glory. When Razzie nominations were announced today, Trump landed bids for Worst Actor and Worst Screen Combo alongside “his self-perpetuating pettiness,” according to Razzies chief John Wilson. Trump’s real-life partner Melania nabbed a nomination for Worst Supporting Actress. Both are honored for portraying themselves in Dinesh D’Souza‘s “Death of a Nation” and Michael Moore‘s “Fahrenheit 11/9.”
In the battle over Worst Actor of the Year, Trump competes against Johnny Depp (voice in “Sherlock Gnomes”), Will Ferrell (“Holmes & Watson”), John Travolta (“Gotti”) and Bruce Willis (“Death Wish”).
Melania’s rivals are Kellyanne Conway (“Fahrenheit 11/9”), Marcia Gay Harden (“Fifty Shades Freed”), Kelly Preston (“Gotti”) and Jaz Sinclair (“Slender Man”).

With the Academy Award nominations being announced tomorrow, here’s something a little lighter as a momentary distraction. The Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies, have announced their annual nominees. This “worst of” nominations list attempts to shine a light on the films and performances that were the opposite of high quality in a given year. For 2018, they’re at it again, with a new political wrinkle. This isn’t something to pay much attention to, but on the eve of the Oscars nominations, something silly like this is a change of pace, at least. Consider it an appetizer of sorts before the main course in the morning. This year, the Razzies were led by Gotti, which was “honored” with six nominations. Also taking in a half dozen nods was The Happytime Murders. In the top category of Worst Picture, those two movies were joined by Holmes and Watson,...

The Razzies have announced their nominations “honoring” the worst films of the year, and as usual they’re plucking the low-hanging fruit. “Gotti” and “Holmes & Watson” have the dubious honor of leading all films with six nods each, including Worst Picture; “The Happytime Murders,” “Robin Hood,” and “Winchester” are also up for the top prize, with Donald Trump somehow landing a nomination as well.

If their dismal reviews wasn’t punishment enough, for the 39th year, the Razzie Awards seek to recognize the achievements of the worst movies of the year. And for 2019’s crop of nominees, John Travolta’s “Gotti” and Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s “Holmes & Watson” both received the “honor” of being nominated for Worst Picture of 2018.
Melissa McCarthy might be nominated for an Oscar on Tuesday morning, but on Monday morning, she scored a nomination for Worst Actress for both “The Happytime Murders” and “Life of the Party,” and the former also landed among the five Worst Picture nominees. A lifelong fan of Sherlock Holmes, director John Stevenson had a set of specific conditions for taking on the Paramount animated sequel, Sherlock Gnomes. Coming off Kelly Asbury’s 2011 feature Gnomeo & Juliet, the follow-up would retain key elements—namely, a band of charming garden sculptures, who get into a series of comedic misadventures. At the same time, Stevenson’s take wouldn’t be overly goofy or broad. Set in contemporary London, it would show reverence for an iconic literary character, who would be “repositioned to work for a family film.” An interesting and unusual challenge for the director was to take a franchise that began in one genre—the musical romantic comedy—and recontextualize it for another. “That’s not a normal thing to do with any kind of movie, let alone an animated one,” Stevenson says. “But that was the condition for me to work on it, and...

Even with the massive success of John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” and the latest installment of Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible” series, Paramount had a mostly flat 2018 at the box office.
Though it crawled up a spot from 2017 to take sixth place in market share, pulling in just over $700 million in domestic box office to date, the Viacom-owned studio still lagged well ahead the five other majors and showed little sign it would reclaim the No. 1 spot it held as recently as 2011.
“It’s a year where they have to take stock and look forward to creating more franchises like ‘Mission: Impossible’ as well as working with filmmakers like John Krasinksi to come up with unexpected hits like ‘A Quiet Place’ that could be hugely profitable for the studio,” comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced on Wednesday that 25 films have been submitted into the Oscars Animated Feature race, meaning there will be a full slate of five nominees in the category this year. Highlights among the group include “Incredibles 2,” “Isle of Dogs” and “Sherlock Gnomes.”
Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process. Sixteen or more films must qualify for the maximum of five nominees to be voted, meaning that this year the submitted films have crossed that threshold.
Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture.

On Wednesday (October 24), the academy announced that 25 films qualified for consideration in this year’s Oscar race for Best Animated Feature. That is one shy of last year and two off the record number of entries in 2017, which in turn had eclipsed the 2014 record of 20 features. There could be up to five nominees depending on how they score with the screening committee. All of the major players in the animation field have at least one film in the running.
