funny and satisfying

Warning: Spoilers
This is a great documentary about fashion models and the ups and downs of trying to make it in the industry. The pace is quick and skillful as it volleys back and forth between the horror stories of experienced models and the trials and tribulations of up and comers. Fascinating interviews with seasoned models Hoyt Richards and Beverly Peele mine the creepy underbelly of their personal experiences. To tell how they earned a little cash on the side, or to tell how they spent their surplus millions would spoil the suspense. It's better to hear it from the people themselves, as they use the documentary camera as a confessional. Filmmakers also follow a selection of young, hot billboard types as they try to stay thin, work out, and meet agents. And the only real criteria for them is whether or not they have "it", whatever "it" is that models have. There's no way to learn "it", there's no way to practice "it", it's just something models… HAVE. The mysterious force that leads to fame and fortune and shampoo endorsements. Chasing Beauty is a funny and satisfying journey, and makes you question exactly how glamorous the spotlight really is. Kudos to the filmmakers.

Shocking, Depressing, Inspiring
rstephen324 May 2013
While very depressing at times, this films makes a successful attempt to peel back the onion of runway and fashion modeling. In doing so it reveals the sobering reality of how difficult it is to make it in this industry; but also how hard work and motivation (sprinkled with a pinch of luck) can indeed pay off! Chasing Beauty is bold, beautiful, and shocking, but there's enough here to satisfy anyone's curiosity. This is a good watch for aspiring models, their parents and support network; fashion photographers and anyone else with an interest in this subject. It could easily work as an educational prop for support organizations and educational institutions.

Great Modeling Documentary...a real look into that world
theblusterous12 February 2013
I just had the opportunity to see Chasing Beauty at the Houston screening...so happy I did! Finally a modeling/fashion documentary that covers some different and surprising stories from the modeling business. Chasing Beauty was a harder hitting look than I went in expecting. I don't want to give anything away, but there were unexpected story lines to say the least. Brent Huff did such a fantastic job in giving the audience access to BOTH sides of a crazy business, the good and the bad. It was a fair look into that world. The doc was fast paced and very well done. I look forward to seeing it again when it comes out.

A provocative look into the cost of high fashion.

Warning: Spoilers
It was amazing to me to see the lengths that some will go to in achieving beauty, career and fame. Chasing Beauty was very enlightening to a person that is not in the fashion industry. From the outside, from what we see on the magazine racks, beauty looks natural, that these models were born this way. Unknowing to me was what many of the models achieved naturally, versus unnaturally. From the touched up photoshop images, to permanent surgical alterations to the preying on of the successful and unsuccessful, Chasing Beauty opened my eyes to an industry that is not only a billion dollar institution, but an ingrained part of our society. This film started off on the positive side, showing what these models achieve and the glamour that comes with it. I was taken back by the model who came out from Kansas City to make it here in L.A. and really thought she would make it big. I appreciated the shift in the documentary to be balanced and show some of what these models go through to achieve fame, many times sacrificing to get into an industry that rarely views them as simply nothing more than a commodity for hire. Overall, it was wonderfully filmed and told the story of the good bad and the ugly of the high fashion modeling industry.

This documentary is about finding a real meaning of beauty, which seems to be limited to a body image and physical appearance by media.
hrp071019 March 2015
A lot of documentaries and movies have dealt with this issue on beauty these days but this documentary deals with the idea of beauty in a broader sense in a specific field. Such a unique way to perceive a beauty allows the audience to understand what it looks like to live as a model who always has to look good and be in shape in order to keep their job. Throughout the documentary including a bunch of interviews with models, plastic surgeon, and make-up artists, I found myself questioning the real meaning of beauty. This documentary really makes you think about what it really means to be beautiful as a human being and how a definition of a beauty has been limited to a body image and physical appearance in general these days. What I also really liked was a unique technical aspect of this film, which was very natural and honest as they try to talk about beauty, which is considered to be perfect. I would highly recommend this film to not only all the women who struggle with a body image but to anyone whether male, female, young or old who is ever looked in the mirror and not liked what they saw.

Great movie for people of all ages considering the modeling industry.

Great job Brent!!! **** Very engaging**** I loved how the movie was sincere, bold, genuine & educational. The movie exposes a raw truth for males & females; about how great & hard the climb to being a model is. I learned a few things involving the extremes models are willing to go through to fight their hunger or keep a certain size. One model didn't get her "period" until her twenties because she was so thin. I didn't know that was possible. This movie gave really good insight to the beauty industry. With every dream you face risks & other options to take but it's up to us to keep moving in a good direction.

I'm looking forward to Brent's next movie. ~G

Outstanding, inside look at the modeling industry
jvaughncomedy7 April 2013
I recently watched "Chasing Beauty" at the Kansas City, Missouri screening and it was absolutely fantastic! Brent Huff did an outstanding job putting this film together and the results couldn't have been any more intriguing. The stories he weaved throughout the film took a rare, inside look at the modeling industry and I would highly recommend it to everyone. Brent asked all of the right questions and the models, agents and other participants in the film gave some very straightforward and honest answers to give the viewers a true picture of this glamorous, fast paced and sometimes heartbreaking business. I was truly amazed at the behind the scenes information revealed in this film. I've already watched it a second time!

Even if YOU don't want to be a model... we're ALL Chasing Beauty!
Chasing Beauty was an honest and real look into what the modeling world is really like. Sometimes it's amazing. Sometimes it's crazy. Sometimes it totally sucks. Sometimes it's really weird. Sometimes it's all luck and timing. There are so many factors that make a model a success or not and it often has little to do with looks and beauty. At the end of the day, we are all "Chasing Beauty". I love the honesty and purity of this film's message. It wasn't all dark and drama, nor was it all glam and glitz. It's informative. It's factual. And it's quite funny! To everyone out there who wants to be a model, you want to watch this. And to everyone else, you'll still enjoy this film. Kudos to the Chasing Beauty Film Team!

What an amazing film!
andreaporrasmadero15 November 2013
My friend Robbie told me about the film and I watched the film. It was very good. The director had an interesting message to tell and he told it well. I am a film major and am hoping to make some good films soon.

CHASING BEAUTY provides a rare glimpse into the intriguing and complex world of modeling. Behind the glossy covers of Vogue and Glamour lie the rarely talked about, uncensored stories of what models endure and sacrifice to become a top model. CHASING BEAUTY examines body image and the psychological effects of the beauty business on young women and men. The film examines what it takes to be a top model - the demanding and oftentimes unattainable physical requirements of the position, the financial and emotional investment, and the moral negotiations that are sometimes prerequisites for making it. The film follows supermodels, photographers, agents, designers, plastic surgeons, make-up artists and psychologists and asks the question...what is beauty and is it worth the cost?

Truly shows "the ugly side of being pretty"
kt-ald1728 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Intriguing, fascinating and informative. Chasing Beauty directed by Brent Huff truly shows "the ugly side of being pretty". The director had plenty of interviews that were either former models or they worked in the modeling industry. This really helped me to get a first hand "feel" of the modeling industry and gave an honest hard look at what it takes to become a model. This documentary was very informative and grabbed my attention right from the beginning. This film was far from boring. The way this documentary was filmed fit well with the topic of modeling. The model industry and the fashion industry are very modern, contemporary, and fast paced. Huff used upbeat music and the feel of this documentary felt very modern, new and fast paced. Brent Huff deserves praise for this documentary. He included first hand experiences of people trying to make it big in the modeling industry and showed how difficult it really is. Whether you care about fashion and modeling or not, Huff did a great job of informing you of both good and bad sides of the modeling world. Before watching this documentary, I was not aware just how much Photoshop is used in modeling. Huff included footage of a photo editor using Photoshop and he said that the editors completely change a picture of a model or celebrity to fit a beauty template that they created on Photoshop. They fit the models face to this template to make the model or celebrity appear more beautiful and perfect. This blew my mind because I thought Photoshop was used in modeling to remove blemishes or to perfect skin; not to completely change someone's body shape or face. This is a great film to watch to be informed that modeling is not always glamour and fun. I think young men and women as well as teenagers would benefit from watching this, especially if they are interested in the modeling career because being a model is not exactly what you think it is. I know this film made me think twice about the modeling industry and think about if it is really worth the effort to try and make it big time.
