Philomena takes us into the Late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century and the rise of machines. We are introduced to the Wright Brothers (If they only flew a few hundred feet, why didn't they just walk?). And Edison's invention of the light bulb is greatly overrated because there were candles already. She shows us the first world war and the causes. The people she is interviewing seem even more bewildered.by her questions. She asks about the tattoos Lincoln supposedly had on his stomach. Henry Model T Ford is looked at and his use of the assembly line to build cars. There is also an intense discussion about when airplanes began needing toilets. Oh, and one of my favorite discussions where she talks about the Titan IC, a kind of huge submarine that was only used once and taught people that they can't breath at the bottom of the sea.
