Unusual and hard to predict.
Thrill_KillZ24 March 2013
This tale begins with a man waking up in a shallow grave with amnesia. Not knowing exactly what to do, he begins to wander aimlessly through this remote Indonesian forest, eventually finding a cabin with a car parked outside. Inside he's horrified to find the cabin empty except for the bloody corpse of what he believes to be his wife as he discovers a wedding ring on his finger. Then, after watching a video of a faceless attacker killing her, he ventures back into the forest, scared & confused, with only a lantern to guide his way. The atmosphere in the first thirty minutes was creepy & unpredictable as the viewer watches and waits to get a handle on what exactly is going on in the film.

As more information is introduced, the level of suspense does come down a little and at times I found myself scratching my head a bit. Certain things happen that seem at the time a bit absurd, but if you stay patient and continue into the final act, there is a nice twist on things that IMO made it a very original worthwhile watch. Some camera work was a bit shaky, but for the budget the production value was just fine for the duration of the film. The acting wasn't a problem, there wasn't a whole lot of dialogue for it even to become an issue. It is an English speaking film despite it's locality & ethnicity of the cast. In all, it wasn't a highly suspenseful thriller or a gory horror flick, although it did contain some elements of each. If horror fans are looking for something different than the same old clichéd plot line than I do recommend taking a look, it's originality & clever end make for a solid 6/10.

Smart little horror flick
curleyac21 August 2013
The movie starts you out confused but interested. It gives you a chance to put all of the pieces together as you watch the main character attempts to solve the mystery and save his siblings. Finally you think you have the plot down and you are ready to label the film "slasher flick involving dummies not looking for help, but fighting the battle themselves in the woods". Same lost in the woods genre movies" The director takes you on the twist of the epic proportion. This movie is a classic and a must see for true horror/suspense fans, but you have to be patient,. All will come to light prior the credits rolling and you will rewind it at leas once, if you are like me. ENJOY!!!

Not that hard to predict it, still fun tho!
Patient4448 October 2013
Well this is a movie made with love! Yes, the good old times are coming back to us, because here we have something not made to bring millions from the box office, but to entertain, to explore the beauty of cinema.

OK, let's get down to business: indeed, the plot is not the most original, but not the most used one either, it will present itself as new to most and as a beautiful deja-vu to the rest. The acting was quite lovely, the plot makes you wonder a lot and the ending will snatch some applause from the beginners and a smile or two from the elders.

There isn't much to say about Modus Anomali without spoiling it, therefore I have to pick my words carefully, so, I'll sum it up like this: it's a nice breath of fresh air, which I for one was dying to take, not scary, a little suspense yes, some thrills and overall a good story.

Do I recommend it? Well if you want to see a nice film, sure, this one will do the job. Just be aware, don't come here thinking you'll fine the lost gem of horrors, just walk by, grab a seat, some chips, relax and enjoy. It's a movie made with love, you won't wanna buy to see it, but you will want to watch it! Cheers!

A Huge Waste of Time, Awful Ending
nafps18 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For almost 90 minutes, the film follows a single man wandering in the woods, convinced something is stalking him. His paranoia leads him to kill both his children by mistake, in two different knife attacks.

And that's the whole film except for the supposed twist ending several reviews praised. So what was the twist? He was high on drugs that made him see things and get psychotic. The loving father we were supposed to feel sorry for turns into a crazed killer again, this time killing an innocent family, a mother and her two teen kids.

The problem is, we lost any sympathy for him once we saw him murder his second child "by mistake." The would be twist is not mind blowing at all. You feel cheated.

clever little film
Corpus_Vile28 April 2013
A luckless individual wakes up from being buried alive in the forest with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Stumbling across a cabin he finds a horrific snuff film. From there on, he slowly regains his memory and realises he and his family are being stalked by a mysterious killer. So begins a murderous game of cat & mouse as he attempts to save his family and stay one step ahead of his pursuer...

Let's face it, this premise sounds pretty generic and bog standard, doesn't it? Well... it isn't.

And I'm not gonna tell you any more except to recommend you stick with this unusually shot in English Inonesian offering as it's a smarter film than it appears to be. While standard in set up at first, director Joko Anwar cleverly pulls the rug out from under your feet with a surprising and smart little revelation.

So horror fans, have patience with this one, as its payoff is well worth it, and while the eagle eyed and sharp listeners may realise what's going on, it's still a satisfying film that puts a nicely innovative spin on the survivalist horror sub genre.

7.5/10 a decent little horror and what with 2009's Dara, Indonesia are showing themselves a force to be reckoned with for horror cinema.

starts off good but goes down hill fast
lil_dude66663 April 2013
Started watching this film with very high expectations. i could not have been more disappointed. As for the twist in the end it does not make any sense whatsoever and throughout the film the actions of the lead character are beyond stupid(when you watch this movie you will understand. I am shocked to see that people have rated this fairly high when i would give it a maximum of 4. If you agree with this review after watching please comment, many thanks, hope you enjoy this awful movie as i certainly did not. Like i said the film does start off with some potential but as the film progresses it goes dramatically down hill. You can also tell from this movie that the acting is very bad and that they should have made it in the original language instead of the cast speaking English, very silly if you ask me..

This one ultimately delivers in the end
Red-Barracuda26 April 2013
A man wakes up in a shallow grave in a forest with no memories. He soon discovers scenes of horror and tries to discover what happened.

This Indonesian thriller has clearly been pitched at an international market seeing as it's an English language film. Perhaps unsurprisingly, when lines of dialogue are spoken they are a bit clunky. However, there really is hardly any dialogue at all. The story is told virtually all via images. We work out details gradually and slowly put things together. To be honest, for the first hour I wasn't too impressed. There were occasionally effective moments such as when the protagonist hides in a shack to evade a mysterious opponent. But for the most part this opening two-thirds goes by a little too slowly and some character actions seem entirely bizarre. However, it has to be said that the final third is really rather good. It actually puts some of the frustrating moments from earlier into some kind of context and it ensures that the film ends in a satisfying way. This is for me an example of a film that is definitely saved, or even defined, by its clever denouement. For this reason it is worth sticking with for sure.

Forget about it
kosmasp4 July 2013
Actually you might just have done that. Or not, but maybe you have to watch this to be able to forget about it. As another reviewer writes, this movie will be made or break even further with the reveal towards the ending. I thought it wasn't as clever as it was trying to be, it was annoying as hell though. If the main character thinks he's disorientated, you can only imagine what goes on in the mind of the viewer of this movie throughout.

While it's always fresh to see new takes, it also needs actors and a script to support that weight. Without those a good idea will be smashed very easily. Something that is the case with this movie right here, which is very unfortunate

Another Joko Anwar's great work
aga-sandler3 May 2012
At first, after seeing the trailer, I was like a little bit not surprised about the genre, thriller, or let's say noir movie. As we know that Anwar's two recent movies took the same genre (Dead Time : Kala (2007) and The Forbidden Door (2009)). But as always, Anwar succeed to made me interested.

Well, this is sort of movie which thriller fans will enjoy and I am on of the fan. It was a great experience watching this movie. You'll get a very tensed atmosphere which supported by astounding shooting angle. It is also supported by the score which wasn't excessive, like another typical thriller movie, and still precise.

The actors was quite awesome particularly Rio Dewanto as the leading role. His expression was quite convincing.

The negatives about this movie is a little bit seam computer graphic at one scene. Yeah, just one scene. Also, considering that the actors are all Indonesians and this movie uses English as the language, stiff conversations frequently emerged though their pronunciations was very good.

All could I say, I am proud as Indonesians! Joko Anwar has made such a good movie in the middle of those crappy-cheesy-cheap horror movies invasion in Indonesia. I'm moved how a few Indonesian film-makers still try to raise the Indonesia film towards a better future.

Ritual or Discord?
kerli26008 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Just because people gave this film a low score doesn't mean they are incompetent. This film received a low score for a reason. I finished this film and I give it as such for couple of reasons. One is the story. it started off well where the main character with no memory is stuck in the forest. The tension in the first 30 minutes of the film was superb. Not knowing what's going to happen adds a great deal of mystery and suspense. I wish the writer or director would maintain the atmosphere throughout the movie. It died down as soon as the two kids were introduced. As the story progresses somewhere in the hour mark made it looked like it was ending when there was 20 minutes left in the film. I don't want to give too much off the story away but overall it didn't make any sense and the twist at the end was a cop out. No payoff whatsoever and I bet people who praised this film only because of the twist ending. I have to disagree because when your story does not have a definitive explanation as to why the events are happening or for what purpose then there's no reason why it shouldn't sense. I don't expect the film to spoon feed the audience but at least have a reasonable script. That goes double with the twist ending. In addition to this, there was a lot of plot holes. The acting was terrible. Even though the actors' native language is not English, there is no excuse for that. At least give some effort to the characters. On top of that the dialog was terrible as well. The special effects on the blood was decent nothing special. A negative point was the vomiting scene which was poorly made. The cgi was awful even for a low budget film. I've seen low budget films that didn't have poorly done special effects. The music was pretty good. There was ominous music though I wish they didn't overplay during the chase scenes. The first 30 minutes proved this by having silent moments to add the tension. Camera work was wonky at times. it didn't really bother me. Overall this film was a massive letdown. I was into the story for about 30 minutes of it. Although it went downhill after that I was still interested on how is it that the rest of the story turn out. About the hour mark is when I was disappointed and kind of mad. The twist would have worked if it makes sense but even if it did then what was the purpose of the events unfolding. I give this film a two out of five simply because I enjoyed the tension and mystery part of the film and I wasn't entirely bored throughout the film.

Original and engrossing
matbriggs7625 March 2013
I'm not sure why this film is receiving low scores as I really enjoyed it. Basically, a guy wakes up in a shallow grave in the woods with amnesia and has to work out what's going on. He finds a cabin and the mystery begins to unfold. Or does it. It's not until the final scene where the plot takes a huge leap and, in my opinion, it's worth watching it just for that.

There are hints of Korean film-making in it, like Old Boy. It's atmospheric and tense throughout and it's quite an original film. I think what makes the film a cut above the rest is the sound. You really need to watch the film in surround sound as the sound is one of the strong points that adds to the tension. The mystery kept me guessing until right at the end. It's a very dark film on retrospect and I'd recommend you go into it without any expectations. Just enjoy the ride and wait for the awesome final scene. As I said, it's very original. I hope we see more films from Joko Anwar as he's certainly got talent and the potential to bring Indonesian film into the limelight.

The Indonesian version of 2003 "Identity"
phanthinga29 October 2018
Ritual is my first Indonesian horror movie and although I got a lot of problems with the main character action and the people surrounding him but it all clear in the end thank to the final arc and a little digging on the internet. As I say in the title of this review "Ritual" really remind me of "Identity" a movie where the main character played by John Cusack also going through the same thing but it got good performance from the cast and the ending hit me harder than Ritual so if you like this movie definitely check out "Identity"as well

Nice attempt, but too many unbelievable mistakes by the protagonist
kennethwyoung29 October 2020
I just don't get all the high marks for this film. It's not awful, but for a 'realistic' thriller, the main characters make too many obviously poor choices to be believable. For me, a realistic horror/thriller film has to make sense. Even if the characters don't do what I would do, I'd like to at least see where they're coming from. If their actions are beyond inexplicable, then I might as well spend my time watching a supernatural horror film with ghosts, or a demon-clown, etc. For this reason, I couldn't make it past the 1-hour mark. Nice camera work, good scenery, but just not well-written characters.

Wish the film was as good as its twist
Ansango16 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Modus Anomali aka. Ritual starts with a man waking up in the woods with no recollection about himself and his whereabouts. Gradually he pieces together his predicament with the help of a video camera and realises that he must find his two children all while battling people who are trying to kill him.

The premise, while not new is presented interestingly. We follow our protagonist and like him we as a viewer are also unaware of what is happening. The film invites us to piece the puzzle along with our protagonist and whatever we see onscreen is from his point-of-view, so when he realises that he has a family or his name is John, we realise that at that very instant. Dramatic irony is almost non-existent in the entire film.

The film doesn't follow a conventional narrative structure where you get a protagonist, an antagonist, a conflict and a confrontation in the end. We don't even know about John and how he got here and who the villain is? The entire film is like a chase scene between the victim and hunter, full of question with how and why. Due to this, it becomes heavily reliant on its climax to give the necessary resolution and tie things up neatly. The film, right from the commencement bets heavily on its climax but prevails only partly. While the twist at the end is genuinely good, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions in its wake. The way the plot progresses from second to third act is really weird and feels completely out-of-place and disconnected from the narrative. It's implied that some sort of drug is responsible but the way it's shown is lousy.

The entire story is set in a forest and is shot using natural lights which heightens the atmosphere and helps tremendously in ratcheting up the tension while also creating a suspenseful and moody atmosphere full of dread and gloom.

From the beginning to the end, we follow our protagonist, played by Rio Dewanto, and in nearly 75% of the scenes he is the only person on screen. While in physical tasks like running, fighting, jumping etcetera he excels, but being the only actor on the screen for almost the entirety of the film, his character also demands a lot of emotional stuff, and that's where he botches everything up. And it soon becomes a problem because the film contains very few dialogues and most of the scene demands acting without lines and in lot of places our lead needs to show his vulnerable side. Those scenes demanded subtle acting but Rio is really bad in those moments. Other cast members come and go for two or three scenes and they are stereotypically written and mediocrely performed.

This is the most different film in Joko Anwar's stellar filmography, and also his weakest. The way he chose to exhibit his story is excellent but falters in its rendering. He begins his film nicely but after a time, the film starts to lose its grip. It's not until the end of the film when the film gains some momentum. The mid-section feels really slow and lackadaisical. Withal, the moody atmosphere he created was top-notch.

Cinematography is awesome with some incredible use of handheld camera. Most of the film is shot in handheld mode which creates a sense of disorientation while long takes gives a sense of being trapped. Gunnar Nimpuno's camerawork is masterfully coherent and impeccably captures the setting and action.

Ritual is an interesting and fresh take on a done-to-death horror setting of being trapped in a jungle while being hunted. While the initial and final parts of the film are really tense, it's the mid-section that exhausts. Also, a lot of pending questions doesn't help its case. It is an impressively shot psychological thrill ride albeit you have to overlook its sundry flaws in order to enjoy the ride, which to be fair are exceedingly tough to ignore.

There's some redeeming aspects to this that makes it worth your time.
kevin_robbins24 May 2021
The Ritual (2012) is an Indonesian movie I recently watched on Tubi for free. The storyline focuses on a man who wakes up in a shallow grave in the woods who is being hunted. He watched some tapes and sees a pregnant woman appear to be gutted. He tries to track down and understand what happened while also staying alive. This movie is directed by Joko Anwar (Impetigore) and stars Rio Deanto (Love & Faith), Hannah Al Rashid (The Night Comes for Us) and Marissa Anita (Gundala). This film has an uneven storyline and some choppy dubbing; however, by the time you get to the end and understand what's going on it's actually pretty interesting. There's also some worthwhile intense sequences like every time he turns on the tape, where he's getting chased and the guy is shooting arrows at him and the neck cut scene at the end. There's some redeeming aspects to this that makes it worth your time. I'd score this a solid 6.5/10.

This was not a movie for me...
paul_haakonsen23 December 2015
"Modus Anomali" (aka "Ritual") was nothing like I had hoped for, given the DVD cover which looked rather interesting. I had expected that I would be in for a tour de force or for an impressive horror movie, but I was disappointed on both accounts.

To be honest, then I must admit that my interest in the movie dwindled quite quickly and found myself with my attention to the phone instead of the movie. And for me, that is a sign of a very uninteresting movie, because I have a tendency of sticking with most movies to the end. As such, I made it roughly halfway through "Modus Anomali" before I just gave up out of sheer boredom and turned off the movie.

The storyline in "Modus Anomali" was boring and lacking things to keep the audience nailed to their seats. Basically the storyline was just a guy running around in a forest, trying to elude some unseen antagonist, but failing horribly at doing just that.

I think that the people involved in the movie did have a blast in filming and making it, but director Joko Anwar failed to put together an impressive movie.

Having given up on the movie, I can honestly say that I will never make a second attempt at finishing it. It just simply isn't worth the time or effort.

I am sure there is an audience out there somewhere for a movie such as "Modus Anomali". I just wasn't part of that audience - possibly even as far away from that target audience as I could possibly be.

A Pretty Good Movie, Despite The Major Flaws I Still Have To Appreciate And Admit The Great Stuff That Still Exist Mostly In The Film
HabibieHakim1238 April 2024
7.5/10 Modus Anomali is actually an easy 8 and 9 material for me, but what kept me away from it was Rio Dewanto acting in this movie that i don't think was good, i mean the decision from Joko Anwar to make it an English spoken language film with local actors was unnecessary for me but i think as long as the local actors could still played it well then it shouldn't be a problem, but everytime Rio Dewanto start talking i just couldn't stand it, i'm sure he's a good actor with his local language but he just still not felt natural with his English yet, same thing with his son actor, but the rest of the cast was actually doing fine surprisingly, it's too bad that the main actor was the one that flawed, although at the same time i think his physical acting was great, and that's what he's mostly doing in this movie so at least there's that, again overall i think Modus Anomali was another pretty solid story that Joko Anwar offers, an intense, brutal, mind playing film fills with great set and good camera work, i felt the tension and everything, and props for Joko Anwar for the writing credits too with the interesting twist that happen in the movie, basically avoiding making the film as another typical intense survival experience, so overall Modus Anomali was still a pretty good movie and despite the major flaws i still have to appreciate and admit the great stuff that still exist in the film as it mostly what's in the film, i also just wish they use the Indonesian language instead as i really sure it could've been a better movie.

Wants to be a lot more clever than it turns out to be
golem0927 July 2015
This is a movie I really wanted to be good. The setting and premise is nice, and it's shot pretty well (That's where the 2 stars come from).

Sadly, the rest does not hold up at all. It is plain as day to see that everything is based on an artificial twist ending that is meant to be as shocking as possible. Everything constructed to support it, and even the motivations for it, don't make any sense, except to ensure it's existence.

It could have easily been tweaking slightly to ensure coherency, but that would have made the twist impossible, and that was clearly more important. I can not recommend this to anyone sadly.

Buddhism, Violence and Repetition
captainpass12 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A very good movie. 10 stars for the idea/5 for the execution = 7 overall.

This movie best makes sense (to me, anyway) if viewed as a sort of allegory or Buddhist-infused meditation on the nature of human violence.

We don't know exactly why the events we witness are taking place, and it's not always clear how we should feel about the events either. And the last twenty minutes, frankly, actually deepen the mystery rather than explain it. The mild-mannered, confused and "hurt" human man we first encounter as he rises from "the grave" is, by the end, a being without feeling-- a man who robotically replicates the story for yet another "victim." Over the course of the movie, we see the desire to avenge his hurt lead him to, in turn, hurt himself and his remaining family members. He then becomes part of the cycle of violence (the "Ritual" or "Modus Anomali) before re-burying himself so that the "ritual" can continue.

In short, this is the rare horror movie with a philosophical or quasi-religious point of view. Worth a watch.

Below average wannabe "Thriller"
sonysasankan31 October 2019
What should have been a decent 20 min movie is dragged to about 90 minutes of unedited long boring takes. At some portions, the protagonist is walking from Point A to Point B. I was forced to fast forward the whole "walk" and get on with the movie. Geez. Another point its driving... where we see the driver driving.... and driving... and still driving... and then some more driving! Its like they were forced to stretch it to some minimum length so they were eligible for some festival or something.

On top of that, we have actors speaking english which is clearly not their preferred language, and it shows. The "twist" is decent, but really falls flat when you think back and realize it doesn't make any sense. It clearly wasn't well thought out.

Modus Anomali is indeed an "Anomaly"
bakerstreet-862-61284022 January 2013
Well, i've gotta say that i was interested to watch it because of its catchy title and the idea about an English spoken film made by Indonesians (i reckon it's the 1st Indonesian film which used English as the main language in it).

The 1st 50 minutes, the film seems to be so dull with the shallow explanations, barely interactions from one character to another (unlike other previous Anwar's films), how kid characters ruin it with the way they converse in the forest poorly shows lack of thrilled & anxious expression, seemingly to be a shallow no-background story plot, and unsynchronized & unexplained details(necessarily prepared for the ending). All can lead the audience to a boredom and sleepiness.

Endure it, then the film will show you the worth of Joko Anwar as a writer-director and Rio Dewanto as an actor.

Anwar prepared an unexpected suspense plot mixed with some thrilling horror ingredients blending them all in the perfectly fit location, and served it to the audience with some quite decent cinematography. Dewanto as the leading actor made convincing enough expression and acting (great pukes as well) so that his performance made "John Evans" becoming a more interesting character.

After watching it, some questions may show up in mind regarding the background story that causes things that happen in "Modus Anomali" and how the story goes after the film ends. Generally it's a recommended nice flick to spend the evening with.

8/10.

It's just too dull
daryopeek9 August 2022
I watched it the second time to give this movie another chance after the director's new movie released last week. Joko Anwar almost never fails to give interesting movies, but Ritual (Modus Anomali) is the exception. Almost all of the slasher formulas were brought up here, but I feel like the movie is aimless to tell what's the story and purpose. It's just pitch black in the forest with panic guy as the centerpiece.

The strongest/weakest point of the film is probably the brilliant yet forced ending. It works at first, but Ritual's simplistic approach almost make the ending too blatant, hence almost impossible for me to return to those tedious first and second act only.

I really recommend it if you don't know the director's other works. They are better than this. If you know, I think it's best to lower your expectation.

Strange flick
deloudelouvain21 February 2015
Despite my low rating I did enjoy watching this movie. I was just a little bit disappointed by the end. I'm not going to say much about it because I never want to spoil a movie. The only thing I will say about it is that I like a nice story with an easy ending, and with this ending I had to think too much and I just don't like that. For the rest I thought the movie was filmed well, with good atmospheric sound, and with a good actor, although I would have preferred if he had been talking in his own language. During the whole movie you are living in suspense with the actor and you wonder what's going on and what's going to happen. Anyways like I said I might have been mean with my ratings but that's just because of the ending.

Troubling but effective effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder19 February 2016
Awakening in the middle of the jungle, a man with no memory to his identity tries to piece together the disturbing events that lead to his condition and finds a far darker and more sinister secret at the root of the actions throughout his trip.

While there's not a whole lot to like here, it does have some pleasing parts to it when it tried, Among the more impressive parts here is the fact that there's an actually suspenseful job here getting to the main set-up, as the wandering through the jungle and stumbling upon the abandoned cabin with the tape of his wife being held hostage and then finding the blood on the floor creates a really strong opening here as well as the later scenes of him being out in the wilderness alone with the sounds of the animals chirping away furthering this nicely. As well, his search through another cabin later on while trying to stay out-of-sight of a group of attackers outside lends itself to some really creepy moments especially once they light the casket on fire to deter him. The final half, though, where this one runs through an incredibly impressive and truly enjoyable twist ending that takes this on a much darker and far more chilling concept than what had been previously utilized, makes for a really fitting end to this one. Outside of these elements, though, there's not a whole lot worthwhile about this one. The main problem is the fact that far too much time is spent here doing absolutely nothing but simply enhancing the running time focusing on utterly bland and utterly uninteresting passages throughout here with the main parts of the film featuring him just simply wandering around the forest doing absolutely nothing. All we get are panicked shots of him trying to stay out of sight as he tries to piece everything together. There's very little dialog in here as well to help bring things along as the first half plays more like a silent effort without letting anything come out to help this one make more sense with the ability to help let it be known what's going on. With so little information to go on and rather little of interest here in terms of what's happening, this one takes quite a while to get interesting and makes for a challenging watch as it struggles to get it's footing under itself with the way this takes to get to it's good parts and really lowers this one significantly. As well, for as much good as the positives unleashed with it's fine twist does amount to, this one still undoes a lot of good by employing it which really renders far too much of what transpired earlier moot due to not being able to make it gel cohesively with the actions throughout the rest of the film, effectively making it seem more like the finale was written first and then reworked into the rest of film, making it seemingly obvious and sticks out quite readily. Still, this one does have some solid points to it.

Rated R: Graphic Violence, Language and children-in-jeopardy.
