Way back in 2011, we heard about a new project from Legendary Pictures called Spectral, which sounded like a gritty version of Ghostbusters. The story follows a special ops group whose sole purpose is to take down evil ghosts who have taken over Manhattan. At the time, there were rumblings the project might move away from New York City to avoid the eventual comparison (both legally and creatively) with Ghostbusters, but it sounds like it's different enough that Legendary is moving forward without any changes, and THR has word that they've hired World War Z and Iron Man 3 star James Badge Dale to star in the film. Read on! The original idea, which has also been called a supernatural Black Hawk Down, came from up and coming writer Ian Fried, whose The Ever After Murders ended up on the 2010 Black List. The writer also has another project called Gaslight, a...

Looks like Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are having a great week. First, their film “Kon-Tiki” gets nominated for an Oscar on Thursday for Best Foreign Language Film. Now, they look to capitalize on all of their recent success, signing a seven-figure deal to helm a big Hollywood film. And one that could be the start of a potential franchise. Deadline reports that the pair are signing up to helm "Spectral" for Legendary Pictures (the home to Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, the upcoming "Pacific Rim" and "Man Of Steel" just to give you an idea of the kind of blockbuster we might be talking about here). With a treatment by Ian Fried (Hammer Films brewing Jack The Ripper movie "Gaslight") and a recent draft by Jayson Rothwell ("Silent Night," the recently aborted Snow White movie "Order Of The Seven") "Spectral" is said to be "a supernatural 'Black.

We're finally going to get a movie based on the legendary Winchester Mystery House! I've been wondering when we would get to see an awesome movie based on this creepy old mansion. Hammer has announced that they've optioned the rights to develop a feature length horror film based on what's considered to be the “world’s most haunted house.”
It's fun to explore the realm of the supernatural world, and I took a trip up to the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, CA a few years back to check it out for myself, and I really had a great time. It's such an incredibly creepy house with an intensely awesome and interesting history. I had an absolute blast taking the tour.

Having toured the Winchester Mystery House personally, I can attest to the fact that the place is as odd as they come. Seriously weird. Windows in the floor. Doors that go nowhere. It's truly a sight and the perfect place for a ghost story based upon, well, the real life ghost stories!

Ian Fried's Gaslight spec script landed at a healthy position on the recent 2011 Black List of unproduced screenplays. Now the writer has reason to celebrate some more as Hammer Films has purchased Gaslight and put it into development.
A Victorian take on The Silence of the Lambs, Gaslight takes place in late 19th century London. Unbeknownst to its citizens, Jack the Ripper was caught and secretly locked away in an insane asylum. But then a new series of grisly killings starts up, and all the victims share one identifying mark in common: two twin puncture marks on their neck. Scotland Yard decides that it will take a killer to catch a killer so it turns to the Ripper and his diabolical thinking process to help them solve the identity of the killer and bring an end to their murder spree.

With solid reviews and opening weekend box-office for its just opened film adaptation of Susan Hill's "The Woman in Black", the newly reinvigorated Hammer Films have announced two more projects it has in the works.
First up the company has acquired the rights to newcomer Ian Fried's Black List-making atmospheric thriller script "Gaslight".
The film posits the idea that Jack the Ripper was secretly apprehended by the authorities and imprisoned in a London insane asylum. It's there where he's called upon to help Scotland Yard solve a series of grisly murders where all the victims died from dual puncture wounds to the neck.
Hammer is also moving into production on the 'inspired by true events' story "The Quiet Ones" which John Pogue ("Quarantine 2") is directing.

More and more Black List scripts are being called from the ranks of the screenplay development realm by production companies and studios looking for fodder they can shovel into the hungry maw of the movie machine. The latest to hit the news radar? Ian Fried’s Gaslight, which Hammer is now working on.Gaslight, not to be confused with the Joe Wright project of a little while back, posits that Jack the Ripper was actually caught and secreted away in a London insane asylum. When a spate of murders occur all bearing the same Mo – a set of puncture wounds to the victims’ necks – Scotland Yard decides to tap Jack’s criminal mind, Hannibal Lecter-style, for some help catching the new killer. There’s no word yet on who might direct or star, but it certainly gives an intriguing, Sherlock Holmes-style twist to the Jack story and reminds us...

Screenwriter Ian Fried hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to selling scripts. Over the last two years, both of his screenplays, The Ever After Murders and Gaslight, were featured on the Black List — or, a list of the best unproduced screenplays. Thanks to Exclusive Media’s genre arm, Hammer, however, things are looking up.
According to THR, the studio has picked up the rights to Gaslight, a period thriller that puts a spin on the legend of Jack the Ripper. The deal is the second one for Fried this year, along with the supernatural action film Spectral he’s currently working on with Legendary.
Said to be similar to The Silence of the Lambs and Alan Moore’s From Hell, Gaslight follows Jack the Ripper as he’s released from his secret imprisonment in a London insane asylum to aid Scotland Yard in solving a series of murders.

Hammer describes the script, called Gaslight, an original creation of writer Ian Fried, as a cross between a "gothic Silence of the Lambs" and From Hell:

Hammer Films continues to move forward with new horror projects and we’re now hearing that they’ve acquired the rights to a new script revolving around Jack the Ripper. Titled Gaslight, the script was written by Ian Fried and involves Jack the Ripper trying to catch a serial killer:
