"My Truth"
the_venetian28 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I there is one expression I am sick of hearing it is "my truth." Most of the time, as in this instance, is is a synonym for a lie. Happily, the issue resolves itself somewhat, with the show essentially coming down on the side of honesty.

This show has potential, though, despite the great appeal of the two principals, they seem to be a bit of a drag on the series. Esther and Kelby, and even Margo, are working out as characters as they settle in, but Humphrey and Martha, with their backstory tragedy and the annoying presence of the usually welcome Jamie Bamber in a role that seems like make-drama, are downers.

The writers have painted themselves into a bit of a corner with this IVF story and the continuing presence of an infertile woman and a man who wants children. There is only one obvious resolution, which is a pity because Sally Bretton is a fetching actress and the two seem well suited and have a charming on-screen chemistry. And to be quite honest, the addition of a new baby on a struggling show -- if they use surrogacy, or the miracle happens and she manages to get pregnant -- is all too often a drag on shows.

Maybe the writers can come up with some solution that lets them talk their way through it. But I do not currently see it and, with regret, I suspect this series is doomed.

This was an interesting yet "slightly infuriating" episode
Ziggy19651 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The main story was ok. I told my wife right away who was involved with the fires as soon as I saw her. Did not see the daughter angle. Why would the daughter need to break into someones place to get paint when it can be bought anywhere? Also, her painting skills are pretty bad that she has paint all over her hands by just holding a paint brush??

The real story here is the IVF issue. I could never understand why the writers would have Martha and Humphrey in episode 1 wanting to have a child and have Martha opening up a cafe at the same time? There is enough stress with the IVF procedure that to add another stress is a recipe for disaster.

It would have made better sense in episode 1 to just have the story of the IVF and not mention the cafe, then wanting to fulfill her dream of a cafe in episode 2 and finally opening it up in episode 3.

The reaction of Martha and Humphrey at the ends shows how different men and women think with regards to having a family.

No matter how much a man would love to have a child of his own with the woman he truly loves, if he KNOWS that they are unable to have one together he will still love her just the same if not more. He will move forward with his life accordingly. Now if he knows that she does not want to have a child with him, even though she maybe capable of doing so, then he will look at his options.

For Martha, I guess it is all or nothing? I have not seen episode 6 so am not sure where this story line will go.

I really do want to like this show. I found the 1st 3 episodes to be brilliant while episode 4 and 5 to be ok. They either split up, which means the show is ending, hich most likely won't happen. Or they come to a compromise and decide to adopt?

What made "Death in Paradise" so great was the detective and how he came to his conclusions as well as the interplay between him and his fellow staff. I would like to see more of that in season 2.

Episode 5
Prismark101 April 2023
This episode is on fire but the heat is going from Humphrey and Martha's relationship.

There are three arson attacks and they could all be linked to the story of the Three Little Pigs. Especially as the word Pig has been scrawled at each place that was set on fire.

Just who is the Big Bad Wolf? Well it could be Archie according to DI Goodman, his wine cellar was burnt down, he also had just recently increased the insurance.

However Humphrey and Martha deal with the fall out over the attempted kiss by Archie.

There was an interesting puzzle regarding the fires, although I had a good idea just who the main suspect might be. The solution was well utilised.

The domestics between Humphrey and Martha seems to be becoming a drag though.

The antagonism between DI Goodman and Chief Superintendent Woods is odd. She might have caught him nabbing on the job but DI Goodman has had a more than decent clear up rate since he has arrived.

Warning: Spoilers
Maybe I've watched way too much cozy detective dramas but really when the firefighter was introduced as a good 'un at the beginning of the episode, I knew something foreboding was in store with the three pigs analogy that threaded its way through the penultimate episode of the first series of Beyond Paradise.

At this stage the in vitro sub-plot threatens to engulf the series quite so, which is a shame. No way this would have happened in Death in Paradise init.

Anyway, the scenery in this episode is gorgeous and serene. It's a shame the first season has only six episodes. Anyway, I like Beyond Paradise.

The best episode yet
studioAT3 April 2023
I thought this was the best episode of the series so far, with an interesting puzzle that needed solving and also some lovely moments in the ongoing Humphrey/Martha storyline.

'Death in Paradise' (the show that this has been spun off from) sticks so rigidly to its format that over time for me it has started to become a bit tired, with the add on plots (the Inspector loves his sidekick etc) even being repeated over time.

'Beyond Paradise' therefore has been a fresh and engaging new prospect, and I like the fact it's not always a murder (I prefer it when it's not actually) and that the characters have a bit more depth about them too.

It's not perfect, they do still fall into some rather lazy stereotypes about daffy West Country people, but on the whole I'd rather watch this than 'Death in Paradise' based on current form.

3 Little Pigs
ygwerin128 November 2023
A fire is discovered in the early hours at the farm of one Lucas Farly, together with a spot of vandalism in the shape of graffiti, the word Pig being daubed on a tractor seeming to imply a personal grudge.

Except that two further fires subsequently occur at different disparate locations, the third taking place at the winery of non other than Archie Hughes, who just happens to be Martha Lloyd's old flame.

A further incident occurs that of a break-in at a local boat shed, that initially appears to be totally incidental, but could provide at least useful clues.

The Police Chief Superintendent C. Woods, has the appearance of being something of a martinet, that impression comes across most certainly in her bearing, and in the approach that she assumes to those officers under her command.

She I assume is a woman on a clear mission, of her own personal elevation up the police promotion ladder, in the shortest conceivable time scale.

She also seeks to be fully on song, with the changes being brought about in the local policing structure, namely the ultimate phasing out of local stations.

She has already sought to make that situation clear to D. I. Goodman, and also has her beady eyes firmly set on D. S. Esther Williams.

I love the show, but this was awful.
Sleepin_Dragon10 April 2023
Humphrey investigates a strange discovery at a farm, and a series of arsons, one of the victims being Archie.

Now I can't lie, I have been a big fan of this series, and rejoiced when I heard that series two was coming, but this fifth episode, was shocking.

Silly, don't get me wrong, I know where my expectations should be with a show like this, but it was just juvenile. It was like a real life retelling of an episode of Scooby Doo, with every single character a caricature, none of them were real, just ghastly stereotypes.

The one good element in this one was Kris Marshall, credit to him, he was great here. Once again, I am really struggling with his and Martha's relationship, did they have to make it such a tragedy.

A silver button on the dungarees, well spotted Miss Marple.....

A shocker, 4/10.

Most infuriating episode
lbowdls3 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was rapt when I saw this show coming. I was a big fan of his detective character on Death in Paradise and thought this would be more of the same. Unfortunately even though it had his character the show overall has week plots - with no murders for him to investigate! Just normal small town occurrences which sure it's more realistic than small towns and a small island having murders every week. It doesn't make it very interesting to the viewer.

But the worse and strangely frustrating thing has been after 7 years Humphrey and Martha are only engaged. And now that engagement seems to be off! WTF? No! They should have been married already with or without a child. Obviously they put this personal life in to pump up the drama. When the drama should be in the detective work of more complex cases!

To top it off I knew who the culprit was!

Awful Awful Awful
joewilson706 April 2023
The scenery and Kris Marshall is great, and Sally Bretton is good too. Everything else is awful.

Its a world of strereotypes... The stereotypical fire chief, Police chief who tries and fails to promote 'the strong' DS , the eccentric old person, the idiot policeman, the lecherous male. The assistant who grows to respect the boss, the handsome, but dull, ex-boyfriend.

And the case is predictibly solved by a button, why is there always a button at every crime, and you probably guessed the culprit after 15 minutes too.

Kris Marchall and Sallt Bretton deserve better than this, it's more Doc Martin than Death In Paradise. Even the worst episode of Murder She Wrote is better than this, and the whole IVF storyline is getting boring by now. What a waste.

There was no panic
sandy-5208530 April 2023
Who writes the episode descriptions? There was no "panic" surrounding the arsons. In fact, no one in the town was shown even talking about the arsons. The episode was just ok; not one the most interesting cases they have had so far and not very many credible suspects to pick from. At the first fire, the main clue just happened to be found right where the detective was standing. Pretty ridiculous. Oh look, I found a button. I wonder where that came from! DUH! Let's spend all day and night looking at a website devoted to buttons! There wasn't much detecting going on and the episode wrapped up quickly. I don't really see the attraction between. Humphry and Martha. Guess we will find out more about their relationship in the next episode.

Not so good
joy4u216 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The show is a spin-off of Death in Paradise, and many of the familiar ingredients of the original show are present in Beyond Paradise.

While the first two episodes were good and enjoyable, things quickly became predictable and the characters were totally unbelievable. One particular moment that stood out to me was when the female lead commented that the protagonist was "growing on her" after he solved four mysteries single-handedly. I found this comment to be dubious and ungrateful.

While some have enjoyed the show's spin-off status and witty writing, others have found the stories to be awful and the characters to be totally unbelievable. In my opinion, the series is not worth watching and viewers should look elsewhere for their entertainment.

Death of a Show
aislingdublin15 August 2023
I looked forward to the Death in Paradise offshoot so much.

Humphrey was a fantastic DI and the best character to have the offshoot based on.

The 1st few episodes were so so. I was willing to allow for bedding in and character development.

This episode however ruined it for me. I will not be continuing. Someone already mentioned Scooby Do in another submission. I wish this had the fun and quality of scooby do.

Sloppy and silly.

Also..his colleague was talking in a slightly menacing way with a pig farmer who had just had a barn burned down. After the conversation where he was polite and answered all her questions, he asked for her number in case he needed to contact her. Her comment to her friend....i know who the pig is here....wtf..he was polite and respectful and then asked for her number...appallingly badly written..man bashing fir no reason at all.
