Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

Adult Swim Orders ‘Common Side Effects’ From ‘King of the Hill’ Creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels
“King of the Hill” creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are partnering with Adult Swim on a new adult-animated comedy titled “Common Side Effects,” the network announced at Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The upcoming half-hour series is created by Joe Bennet and Steve Hely with Judge and Daniels executive producing. “Common Side Effects” dives into the world’s complicated responses when it’s revealed that the elixir of life does, in fact, exist. The comedy’s gateway into this complex reality are former high school lab partners Marshall and Frances. Together, they stumble upon a conspiracy involving big pharma, the government and a rare mushroom that very well may be the key to curing all the diseases in the world.

Meryl Streep once collaborated with one of her children for a small independent feature. But while working alongside her daughter in the film, she refused to speak to her. Which later made for an awkward interaction.

"What makes you think the world is going to get better??" Apple has revealed an official trailer for a new near-future series called Extrapolations, from writer Scott Z. Burns. I wouldn't call this sci-fi, because it's much more sci-real, a vitally important and scary look at what's going to happen when climate change really takes over. The series features "unanticipated stories of how the upcoming changes to our planet will affect love, faith, work and family on a personal and human scale." It's written by and showrun by the same guy who wrote the scripts for The Informant, Contagion, Side Effects, The Mercy, and The Laundromat, so he definitely knows what he's talking about here. "Are we brave enough to become the solution to our own undoing before it’s too late?" The series features a massive ensemble cast: Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller, Kit Harington, Daveed Diggs, Edward Norton, Diane Lane,...

Some performers just seem to have that indescribable "it factor" -- and when it comes to Adam Driver, boy, does he have it. After gaining prominence in a lead role in the HBO hit series "Girls," Driver has catapulted to superstardom. Driver established himself as an actor who likes to take risks and work with all kinds of unique creators, and that's something that's remained key to his success.
The breadth of Driver's work is undeniably impressive. He's done everything from taut political thrillers to voice work to massive blockbusters, never once compromising on his talent. There are a lot of impressive movies in Driver's filmography (not to mention multiple Oscar nominations and several other accolades), and he has built up a career that most could only dream of. But what are his very best films? Well, that's what we're here for. Let's dive into the 15 best Adam Driver movies,...

Nine years before Steven Soderbergh tipped his hat to Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window" with his superb pandemic-era paranoia thriller "Kimi," the artist of many talents helmed 2013's "Side Effects," another film that owes a heavy debt to Hitch's oeuvre (right down to a move lifted directly out of the "Psycho" playbook). The movie stars Rooney Mara as Emily Taylor, a New York socialite who drives her car into a parking lot wall in an apparent attempt to kill herself, her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) having only just finished a four-year stint in prison for insider trading.
Believing the stress of Martin's return, coupled with that from their sudden loss of wealth, was the trigger for her heightened emotional duress, Emily's current psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) prescribes her a newly-approved medication called Ablixa under the advice of her former psychiatrist, Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Leah Remini, who like her friend Paul Haggis is a former Scientologist who left the church and became one of its most vocal critics, is expected to testify Monday on behalf of the “Crash” director fighting a civil lawsuit accusing him of rape.
Haggis’ lawyer Priya Chaudhry argued Friday that the defense should be allowed to call Remini as an 11th-hour witness to testify about “her personal experience with the various tactics used [by Scientology] to destroy her.”
Before the trial began, Haggis’ team won the right to argue that the church was somehow behind the suit brought by former events publicist Haleigh Breest, though they have yet to produce any evidence or testimony making that connection directly.

Updated with more testimony, 4:33 Pm: Paul Haggis finished testifying Friday in his New York sexual assault civil trial, saying he is still the “deeply broken person” he called himself in a 2011 New Yorker article about his exit from the Church of Scientology, but not a rapist.

“Oh, God, no,” Haggis said when his lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, asked if being deeply broken included committing sexual assault. It was his last statement to jurors after three days on the stand disputing a claim by a New York woman, Haleigh Breest, that the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Crash and Million Dollar Baby raped her in his Manhattan apartment in 2013. The two had been at a movie-screening after party for Side Effects where Haggis was a guest and Breest, a publicist, was working.

Paul Haggis Accuser Recalls Oscar-Winning Filmmaker ‘Slobbering All Over’ Her Face in Soho Apartment
The civil rape trial of Paul Haggis, the Oscar-winning filmmaker best known for his work on “Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash,” continued on Friday in a lower Manhattan courtroom.
Former publicist Haleigh Breest, who filed a lawsuit against Haggis in 2017, was cross-examined by defense attorney Priya Chaudhry for most of the day. Breest alleges that the filmmaker forced her to perform oral sex and then raped her in his Soho apartment.
After a limited number of interactions at industry events, Breest encountered Haggis at an after-party on Jan. 31, 2013, before heading back to his home. The event was hosted by the Cinema Society, where Breest worked as a freelance film publicist for eight years. She was let go after her lawsuit against Haggis was filed in 2017.
“It was devastating because I had done that since the end of college. My friends worked the evenings. There was a whole community,” she said.

The sexual assault civil trial of Oscar-winning Crash writer-producer Paul Haggis continued today in Manhattan, with accuser Haleigh Breest back on the witness stand.
The veteran publicist continued to describe a night in 2013 — she was in her mid-30s and he was in his late 50s — when Haggis invited her to his NYC apartment after they’d attended the premiere of the film Side Effects. According to the Associated Press, Breest testified today that Haggis tried to kiss her, backed her up against a refrigerator and asked, “Are you scared of me?”
She then went on give details of the alleged assault. The AP reports that Breest testified about a painful and terrifying attack that left her “really struggling to comprehend what had happened.”
“I couldn’t understand how somebody who seemed like a nice guy would do that,” she added on the stand.

The sexual assault civil trial of Oscar-winning Crash writer-producer Paul Haggis began today in Manhattan. Opening arguments from both sides cited a text exchange by the accuser.
The prosecution pointed to a passage from film publicist Haleigh Breest that read, according to the Associated Press, “[Haggis] was so rough and aggressive,” while the defense pointed out that the accuser also wrote, “I don’t care too much.”
The case centers on allegations by Breest, who claimed in 2017 that Haggis assaulted her in 2013 after the two attended the premiere of the film Side Effects. After myriad efforts by Haggis to have the matter thrown out of court, a New York judge ruled in mid-2018 that the case could proceed. But the Covid pandemic saw the matter put on hold until this week.
Breest is seeking unspecified damages.

Haleigh Breest was the first woman to accuse Paul Haggis of sexual assault, in a civil lawsuit filed in a New York state court in 2017. Nearly six years later – and with four more women having since come forward with similar accusations – the former events publicist still has no trial date.
The court’s massive backlog is mostly to blame for the delay. Lawyers for both Haggis and Breest told TheWrap that the case is active and ready for trial, but is awaiting a calendar assignment. One lawyer working the case told TheWrap that the case has been bogged down by both Covid delays and an already swamped New York Supreme Court, where the case will be tried.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Thomas Newman’s score for Operation Mincemeat, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow, as Warner Bros. releases the film in the UK and Ireland.
Operation Mincemeat tells the extraordinary story of two intelligence officers that changed the course of World War II, saving tens of thousands of lives and breaking Hitler’s deadly grip on Europe by recruiting the skills of the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man.
For the drama, Newman looked to craft a striking orchestral score, which evoked intensely dramatic action, while befitting more nuanced moments. The film was directed by John Madden, with whom Newman had previously collaborated on titles including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Debt. “John Madden is the perfect collaborator. Whip-smart, full of humor and a savvy listener,” says the composer.

HBO Max has released a gripping trailer for “Kimi,” a tech-age thriller that will debut exclusively on the platform Feb. 10.
From director Steven Soderbergh (“No Sudden Move”) and a script by David Koepp (“Jurassic Park”), “Kimi” depicts a world where Kimi, the name of a fictitious Alexa or Siri-like digital assistant, is listening and recording every moment of people’s lives. The film, which hails from New Line Cinema and HBO Max, follows an agoraphobic voice stream interpreter, Angela Childs (Zoë Kravitz), who believes to overhear a murder on a recording she analyzes. Thomas Newman and Steven Soderbergh hadn’t worked together in nearly seven years when the director called the composer about joining his next film “Let Them All Talk” in October 2019. “I was in London finishing up ‘1917’ and he said he had this movie and he was interested in me doing it,” Newman tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Btl Experts: Film Composers panel (watch above). “It was like late October of 2019 and we did it in January, February, pretty soon after I got back from London. We were able to record when people could actually smile at each other and see their faces.”
The HBO Max film is the duo’s fourth collaboration, following “Erin Brockovich” (2000), “The Good German” (2006), which brought Newman one of his 15 Oscar nominations, and “Side Effects” (2013). But the score is arguably the most unique one Newman has done for the Oscar winner. For one, Soderbergh...

Leave it to director Steven Soderbergh and composer Thomas Newman to go retro ’60s with the music for their fourth collaboration, “Let Them All Talk.”
Accompanying Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest and the rest of Soderbergh’s cast crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary 2 is a jazz score that might easily have been penned by John Barry (“The Knack”), Neal Hefti (“The Odd Couple”) or Henry Mancini (“The Pink Panther”).
“Steven genuinely loves that kind of music,” Newman tells Variety. “It was fun to be doing something so different, so outspoken. I’m usually more into the sensuality of how music hits image and can shape and structure things. This was a lot of jazz waltzes.”
Soderbergh contacted Newman while the composer was finishing his “1917” score in London a year ago. They had previously collaborated on “Erin Brockovich,” “Side Effects” and “The Good German,” the last of...

Scott Z. Burns has long been a fan of 1970s political thrillers like “The Parallax View” (1974) and “All the President’s Men” (1976). So as he was writing “The Report,” which would also become his directorial debut, he felt like this ripped-from-the-headlines drama “wanted to be a paranoid thriller.” So he “re-immersed” himself in the works of Alan J. Pakula and Sidney Lumet, “looking for guidance from those movies” and for elements he could incorporate into this one. Watch our exclusive video interview with Burns above.
The Amazon Studios release tells the true story of senate staffer Daniel J. Frontrunners are already forming in the Oscar race for Best Adapted Screenplay, according to early combined predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, many were seen by film critics and industry insiders at the recent Toronto, Telluride and Venice Film Festivals. Hopping into the top 10 for the first time is “Toy Story 4” while “Downton Abbey” drops out. We’ve confirmed category placements with studios or campaigners, but — as awards season veterans know — such labels can change later.

Anyone who thought the pairing of Steven Soderbergh and Meryl Streep would result in a dramatic punch, especially with them tackling the weighty Panama Papers scandal, will surely be shocked by the first trailer for “The Laundromat.” Netflix has debuted the first look at Soderbergh’s latest and it’s a freewheeling explosion, complete with fourth-wall breaks and comedic pizzazz that’s more in line with Soderbergh’s “Logan Lucky” and “The Informant!” than his awards heavyweights “Traffic” and “Eric Brockovich.”
“The Laundromat” stars Meryl Streep as a widow who is cheated out of money and decides to investigate what led to her insurance fraud. The character chases leads to a pair of Panama City law partners who are exploiting the world’s financial system. The lawyers are played with vivacious energy by Oscar winner Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas. The sprawling ensemble cast also includes David Schwimmer, Sharon Stone,...

Burns’ CIA thriller “The Report,” one of the company’s two seven-figure buys at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, a theatrical release this fall, opening September 27. It will open in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., before adding Amazon Prime Video on October 11. At that point, Amazon hopes to release it in a total of 150 total theaters parallel to its home availability.
Unlike rival Netflix, Amazon has has a history of making vital theatrical distribution commitments for films like their other Sundance buy, “Late Night.” Distribution head Bob Berney has made a point of honoring the standard three-month window for theater exclusivity, but this marks a shift under new Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke, who suggested at Sundance that a more flexible approach to releasing Amazon films was in the works.

Mexico’s famed “Tres Amigos” have made a name for themselves in Hollywood and beyond, directing their way to a bevy of Oscars. Less well known: the emerging wave of female auteurs from Mexico.
The directors range from Patricia Riggen and Issa Lopez, both busy with Hollywood projects and gaining their own international recognition, to women from indigenous communities, such as María Sojob, a Tzotzil native, and Elizabeth Piña, of Otomí Hñätho descent. The latter two are making their first documentaries. Also part of this wave: Tatiana Huezo and Variety director to watch Alejandra Marquez Abella.
“It’s just marvelous what’s happening now; there are more female directors in features, and even more making short films,” says Maria Novaro, freshly installed head of Mexican Film Institute (Imcine) and who fought against chauvinism early in her directing career. She is best-known for 1991’s uplifting dance drama “Danzon.”

Every day, I pray to the cinema gods and thank them that Steven Soderbergh didn’t retire from film as he promised back in 2013. “Behind The Candelabra” was supposed to be his final feature, but since then we’ve been gifted with the “The Knick,” the psychosexual “Side Effects,” the gleeful heist movie “Logan Lucky,” unsettling psychological thriller “Unsane” and now with fast-talking basketball drama “High Flying Bird” – a winning repeat victory lap of such quality that almost any other director would envy.
