Thoughtful and sweet family vignette
ty-6244129 December 2023
Hoar showcases a classic schism in values and lifestyle between two different generations, compounded by mental health issues. The mother and daughter characters are both rich and distinctive, but their dynamic is very typical. This makes it easy for the audience to relate to one or the other - or both. Every family has this kind of tension, especially in immigrant communities.

Hoar is well acted and beautifully written. In the climactic scene, the daughter character says "I'm just trying to get by" - a fitting encapsulation of the feelings of a younger generation making their way in the world. Kudos to the filmmaker Jeanette Dilone for developing an intriguing and thought-provoking story within just a few short scenes in a single location.
