Katie Holmes has maintained a relatively low-key persona in the aftermath of her divorce from Tom Cruise last summer, but now she's getting back to business with her first movies since 2011's "Jack and Jill" and the ReelzChannel miniseries "The Kennedys." Photos from the set of one of those movies -- the upcoming "Mania Days" -- have surfaced, featuring Holmes dashing through a fountain with co-star Luke Kirby while clad in a wet T-shirt.
"Mania Days" depicts two manic depressives who meet in a psychiatric ward and embark on a romance. The movie is written and directed by Paul Dalio, who made his feature-film debut with the 2012 Bulgarian movie "Faith, Love and Whiskey." Spike Lee serves as a producer.

The movie, currently being filmed in New York, also stars TV vets Christine Lahti ("Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Chicago Hope") and Bruce Altman ("Law & Order").

Katie Holmes sure seems to be having fun. First she popped up at the Met Gala with a fauxhawk and showing a little sideboob, embracing her punk rock side.
Now she's working on a movie in New York City and seems to be having a blast. Holmes stars with Luke Kirby in "Mania Days," and Tuesday (May 21) called for them to film a scene playing around in a fountain at Washington Square Park.
Of course, it could also just be the most clever excuse a director could ever use to get Katie frolicking around in a wet T-shirt. Paul Dalio, the director, seems legitimate though, so it probably has something to do with the story.
In "Mania Days," Katie and Luke play Carla and Marco, two manic depressives who meet in a psychiatric hospital and begin a romance. After this movie, Holmes jumps into her next project, "Responsible Adults," with co-star Chace Crawford.

Katie Holmes filmed scenes for Spike Lee's latest producing project, Mania Days, in NYC yesterday. She started working on the movie late last month but was joined by costar Luke Kirby on Tuesday. The duo shot scenes in front of a church, held hands while walking on the sidewalk, and got caught up in fits of laughter. In the film, Katie and Luke play two manic depressives who find each other in a psychiatric hospital and develop a romance centered on their conditions. Katie was in a different kind of spotlight last week when she made a stunning Met Gala red carpet appearance. The actress will remain in front of the cameras for a while, though, since she's also tied to another romantic comedy, Responsible Adults, alongside Chace Crawford. View Slideshow ›...

New York -- If you want to get a good idea of Katie Holmes, actress – as opposed to tabloid star – you can't do any better than "Pieces of April," a gem from 2003 in which she plays a ponytailed and tattooed New Yorker desperately trying to prove herself to her visiting suburban family with an improvised, downtown Thanksgiving dinner.
This was back when Holmes was transitioning out of "Dawson's Creek," that teenage soap of a fictional New England coastal town childhood. But Holmes had already amassed an early filmography that any young actress would envy, including "The Ice Storm," "Go" and "Wonder Boys."
The budget for "Pieces of April" started at $6 million, but dwindled to $300,000 and was shot over just 16 days. Writer-director Peter Hedges recalls shooting in "condemnable" buildings with paint dropping off the walls of Holmes' makeshift dressing room.

And she's not slowing down as she shifts her career into a higher gear. Next week, Holmes, 33, is due to begin production on a new film, Molly, which she co-wrote and is co-producing. Oh, look what Bridesmaids has done for Ellie Kemper: it scored her a gig in 21 Jump Street in her time off from The Office. The feature version of the '80s TV show is shooting now with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as cops undercover in a high school to root out drugs and trouble. Late addition Ellie Kemper will be a love interest: Ms. Griggs, "an annoyingly sincere chemistry teacher who's attracted to Tatum's character and surprised when she discovers he's not a real student." (Sometimes casting like this is actually set for some time before it hits the trades, so it is possible Ellie Kemper isn't as late an addition as she appears to be.) The key point of interest here (for me, at least) continues to be that the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller wrote and are directing.

The reviews for Katie Holmes' most recent projects, the controversial miniseries "The Kennedys" and Sundance-booed "The Son of No One," have been downright scary. Now, she's hoping to make audiences shriek in an entirely different -- and much more welcomed -- way.
Holmes stars in the big screen remake of "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," a Troy Nixey-directed horror film produced by acclaimed "Pan's Labyrinth" filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Holmes plays Kim, girlfriend to Guy Pearce and surrogate mother to his daughter Sally (played by Bailee Madison), who, upon moving to a new, creepy mansion, begins to hear horrific noises coming from the basement.
A remake of the 1973 TV movie, the film is highly anticipated by fans of del Toro, the special effects and horror wizard from Spain. It's a solid choice for Holmes, too, who has suffered from rough goes in highly unsuccessful films of late.
