A former high school teacher with a Fast and Furious fetish ...
bosporan25 April 2022
An OK part one to a cross-over episode, but carrying copious baggage in introducing the new show. The plot is interesting enough, a blend of 'alien sightings' with 'psychopath with explosives'.

This is contrived to introduce a spinoff show starring Niecy Nash as trainee FBI agent Simone "Mary Sue" Clark. She drives like a nascar stunt driver, is as caring as Mother Teresa and insightful as Sherlock Holmes.

A well-performed first outing for the character but the 'practically-perfect-in-every-way' and the preachy polemic need dialling back.

Part two will shed further light, though I am sure to watch the new show to see how it settles down.

I hate Bailey's Army background
joshrcal28 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There is a major difference between the Army Reserves and the National Guard. They are two different departments of the army with major differences in purpose and how they work. In addition armories don't have ammo much less c4 stored in them. An armory is not a base. Also a Hmmwv(humvee) is not a mini tank. It's far from it. They had nothing to worry about with running that thing off the road. It wasn't an up armored model so the cab wasn't bullet proof. The hood on any model is just fiberglass, so easily shot through. Finally they are the complete opposite of bomb proof. Those things are so bad at protecting from bombs that the army is multiple phases and years into a replacement called the MRAP which stands for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle. Rookie do your research better.

Good Episode

Dick Wolf could take lessons from Alexi Hawley on how to shove left-wing talking points into a script even though none of them advanced the story line one bit.

Bravo Alexi!

Clarification
aliciadrobb30 April 2022
Is it appropriate to correct another review? In response to the viewer who was incensed that FBI stats on women were wrong. She said black women, not all women. I bet that stat is a lot lower. Just sayin'

Wow...bad...just bad...
adshiel26 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why introduce a new annoying character who simply wouldn't exist in the FBI because she is too old. Why would she get away with insolence and disregard for authority? Are they suggesting black women past the change can only get by being moronically annoying?

How creative a Russian villain with a scar... Hollywood really has no original ideas anymore.

Why is a firefighter at every crime scene?

And the feds side of the story is not remotely interesting.

Great new character
PardonTheTruth27 April 2022
Simone Clark is a home run. A great character: funny, shrewd and with a great knack for reading the room.

I loathe wokey nonsense and this episode was certainly not that. Can't wait to see the spinoff series.

Terribly annoying character
grlym-4684927 April 2022
This Simone character feels like a rip off of the armored truck lady in lethal weapon 3. She was masterful and stole the show, but in a good way ...however this Simone character doesn't have that gravitas. She is just an annoying character.

Additionally, her character and how they used her in the show really deviated from how the show normally goes. Which tells me they want us to like her...like there is going to be a FBI rookie show staring her. If that's true, that's great for people who like her character because they get a while show for her. And it's good for The rookie fans, because she leaves the main show. But if they are trying to work her into the main show....that's terrible for all. Nolan already fits the shows empathy role in the cast dynamic. It doesn't need another. Especially this annoying character

Why am I more Insensed than I should be? Because I love this show. And this character derailed the show so much, I forgot we tracking down a terrorist because if a school counselor that is a some super cop in training and all her backstory derailment. 95% of her screen time could have been edited out and it would have flowed so much better

Hopefully this is the one off, but I still remember that terrible cop chest camera episode earlier in the season where it was nothing but interviews (felt like production phoned it in)

I'm going to love the spin-off!
david-344426 April 2022
Niecy Nash-Betts is simply the greatest! Everything she does is fantastic - always entertaining, always compelling, and always full of sincerity even when her character is ridiculous. I can't wait for the spin-off so we'll get weekly Niecy Nash-Betts back on TV.

So no rules for Rookies anymore
donaldduck-3803026 April 2022
Let me make that clear: it is not about the color of the newly introduced character. I fully welcome a more diverse cast!

But the new character is unfortunately completely unrealistic. Not only is she perfect in any way (driving like in fast and the furious, solving cases like Sherlock Holmes and showing empathy like... no other character on the show). She learned all that because she was a student councilor. Yes that's how it is justified.

Remeber Nohlan and how he failed so many times esp. During season 1 and 2? Doesn't matter anymore, we have a new and perfect FBI trainee.

In addition, she is rude to her supervisors (again remeber how the NYPD trainees had to talk to supervisors before?), which makes no sense at all. Literally nobody, would join a meeting of senior staff of different departments and interrupt the main speaker... as a Rookie.

Last but not least, she is allowed to do almost anything. During season 1-3 we learned the strict rules every police officer (esp. Rookies) has to follow. We remember how Brad was almost fired because he hit another car, Nohlen and Chen were advised to break up and many other stories. But the new trainee is allowed to use a police vehicle, interrogate a suspect (because she knows him...) and disobey any command.

Again, I welcome a more diverse cast, but please stay true to your roots and don't turn it into a fantasy show.

Annoying Character
Regina12026 April 2022
Simone was pretty much annoying. "The oldest rookie in the FBI" doesn't have to be someone who is disrespectful. Why can't they make a polite and mature character as a potential spinoff main character!? Annnd of course this annoying character is portrayed somehow as the "superhero" who gets everything right, and all the other "experienced" FBI agents are portrayed useless.

Overall, they made one episode go to waste just for introducing her in this world.

What the heck was that?
Racingphan227 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, the most infamous drug lord ever from Ozark is now an FBI agent here? Nope Simone Clark may be the most irritating character in the history of the world. The actresess's vocal fry is so grating that I had to mute the TV.

This is by far the worst episode of the Rookie.

Horrible
kj-8248526 April 2022
Painful dialogue and terribly unrealistic... even for "The Rookie" standards. Definitly not gonna waste my time with the second part and there's no chance in hell I woud watch the spin off.

I always wonder "Who are the people greenlighting such a car crash of an episode? Are they just back from a coma or never watched TV before?"

Good god
bagaran27 April 2022
If this episode and the fragments of Simone and her dad are any indication, they will be heavily leaning into the black victim narrative on the spin-off. And of course Simone will be Mary Sueing it in every episode, and experienced agents will look like stooges compared to her.

Yeah, I'm gonna skip this spin-off.

Annoying
shuny27 April 2022
The Rookie has lost its way. If this is an intro to a new show, they shouldn't bother to make it. The character is very annoying. The FBI trainee steps in to pontificate about what experienced officers don't know. Only she can solve the case. Do we really have to watch a second part of this? She is essentially the same character she played when she was a guest actor on Monk where she was also annoying.

Who ever as took over this series needs to go
rodneyhemingway-4332127 April 2022
This was a series a looked forwarded to watching if the 4th series is the future of what's to come there won't be a full 5th series and definitely not a 6th. Whoever took over this series as killed it. It's turned into a joke instead of being interesting and something that resembled real life or as much as a tv series could.

I had forgotten this old school TV strategy
Back in the once upon a time of TV, shows did this thing where they'd "back door" a test pilot into an existing show. Suddenly, the characters you tuned in to see and enjoy are guest stars in their own show while we're force-fed this clown stranger. It took me into the second part/episode before I clicked as to what was happening. Before that, I was terrified that Simone was going to be a new regular in "The Rookie" cast!!

I couldn't tolerate this nonsense. The character of Simone was ludicrous and annoying. Some superhuman blend of Batman, Sherlock Holmes, and possibly Obi Wan Kenobi, that automatically bursts out of a career as a Guidance Counsellor and single mom. (All with premium levels of SASS!)

Any person who "wanted to be an FBI agent their entire life" would have a pretty solid idea what the agency does. Yet, Simone is flabbergasted and outraged with every FBI method or protocol she encounters.

I think 8 year olds are writing this crap
Ocean622-43-1675635 May 2022
I keep giving this show a pass cause I love Nathan. But I think I'm done. Soap boxes, bad science, bad writing, fairly bad acting which I blame on bad directing. Not gonna watch next season.

Horrible episode is it supposed to be a farce - parody?
sk-mckenzie25 May 2022
The plot and new FBI trainee character bordered on Scary Movie type farce - show has really jumped the shark into parody / sad as I really like Fillon.

Lies from Writers, Painful Characters
brian_liska28 April 2022
I was curious when the main character of this episode was talking about females in the FBI, these are publicly available stats. After stating "there's 1%" that number also sounded completely outside reality for a federal sized organization so I looked it up.

In 2019 - special agents.10900 male/2726 female 20% police officers.210 male/46 female 18% professional staff 10105 male/13998 female 58% Where are the writers getting their information from for these kinds of simple mistakes.

I honestly hope they are mistakes because the alternative is intentional misdirection of the audience directly causing misinformation to be spread.

Appalling acting and plot, new character sucks
clytn31 May 2022
The Rookie has been great this season despite some stinky background music at times. This episode is terrible, however and features the worst acting and most annoying, grating voice by the new female actress. I hope I never have to endure watching her ever again. Truly shameful.

Forced Diologue
brennannorwood26 April 2022
The diologue was really awkward, almost every scene with the guest star was really slowly paced. There were more things in this episode that were absolutely unrealistic than any other in my memory. I love this show overall, but boy this was a real stinker of an episode.

Not the Rookie
dshell1029 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes a show introduces a character for a new show. This was one of those episodes and it was a horror show.

The new character was unlikable - against so many people. And of course no one listened so she could seem tough.

And of course no one else knew anything (despite 4 years of good police work). Nope, it was all up to her.

It was so bad it was annoying.

And her character was all about diversity, which was in your face a lot of the time.

This was a black mark on the Rookie in every way. There was nothing enjoyable about it.

It was all about her.

Please keep her away from this great show!
