There are plenty of reasons Woody Allen cast Jesse Eisenberg to be play a fictionalized version of himself in "To Rome With Love," a charming, omnibus portrait of life in Italy's picturesque capital. They're both relentless workers (Allen makes a film a year, Eisenberg says he's going to do a play a year), they're both famous for being quirky (regardless of how reductive that characterization is), and, well, they cut a similar figure.
But Allen comparisons aside, Eisenberg is a star in his own right. After rocketing to fame on the strength of his performance as Mark Zuckerberg in "The Social Network," the 29-year-old Queens native has added a string of fun roles to his resume, including a memorable voice gig in "Rio" (and the forthcoming "Rio 2") and a turn in "30 Minutes or Less," a comedy in which he held his own in the company of Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride.

Killer Joe (Lionsgate) William Friedkin’s film of Tracy Letts’ off-Broadway hit about a family of Texas trailer park cretins (Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon) who hire a cop-cum-hitman (Matthew McConaughey) to take out their troublesome mother, then foolishly cross him, is a stinging satire, given double-barreled audacity by Friedkin’s sure, and fearless, directorial hand. Earning its Nc-17 rating in spades, “Killer Joe” reminds us that daring, frank material like this is why movies exist in the first place. McConaughey gives the performance of his career, hopefully redefined after this. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Commentary by Friendkin; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Thanks goodness Fox Searchlight didn’t decide to go with “The Bayou.” Specialty houses have been on a bit of a bender this year with renaming festival films for theatrical release. The latest is Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions’ decision, announced Thursday, to turn the Kristen Wiig-Annette Bening Toronto film festival comedy “Imogene” (directed by "American Splendor" filmmakers Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman) into the eminently bland, rom-com-sounding “Girl Most Likely” for its July 19, 2013 opening. A few 2012 Sundance selections have been released this year with blander titles, too, including Ben Lewin’s “The Surrogate,” which Searchlight redubbed “The Sessions” (snore…) for its fall release, and Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner’s “Predisposed,” which IFC Films opened over the summer as “Why Stop Now.” (Actually, “Predisposed”...

An unexpected hit and an unfortunate disappointment lead this week's crop of new DVD and Blu-ray releases as Seth MacFarlane's Ted and The Bourne Legacy hit store shelves. The other major release is Ice Age: Continental Drift, but looking beyond that we have some interesting smaller titles including the Sundance hit Why Stop Now starring Jesse Eisenberg and Melissa Leo, Morgan Spurlock's Mansome, and the long-lost '80s cult classic Miami Connection (which is also available on limited edition VHS and digital download here). The first season of Lena Dunham's HBO series Girls is also out, and on Blu-ray we've got The Qatsi Trilogy, Christopher Nolan's Following and Dick Tracy! What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the full list of new releases after the jump. Amazon.com Widgets

Following (Criterion Collection) I received this and Criterion's release of The Qatsi Trilogy only yesterday evening so, no, I haven't had a chance to watch any of it, but I'm really excited to give it a watch considering the new 26-minute interview with Christopher Nolan that accompanies it. The rest of the features, including an audio commentary with Nolan, a side-by-side look at the shooting script and the film and a chronological edit of the film have all been available on DVD before. Following isn't Nolan's excellent lost film, but it is a fascinating film and a great, early look at the director that would go on to receive global acclaim for The Dark Knight and Inception... just to name a couple.
The Qatsi Trilogy (Criterion Collection) I have never seen and only heard of the three films that make up the Qatsi Trilogy -- Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi. I...

Even though he's not even two years removed from his Best Actor Oscar nomination for The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg has felt weirdly absent lately. It might because when he was playing Mark Zuckerberg he was absolutely everywhere, and since then he's appeared only in tiny movies (Free Samples, Why Stop Now) or small studio films that nobody saw (30 Minutes Or Less, To Rome With Love). Ok, he also voiced one of the birds in Rio, but that barely even counts. Anyway, Eisenberg is on his way back early next year in the magician heist thriller Now You See Me, but much more intriguing is his team-up with Submarine director Richard Ayoade for The Double, a loose adaptation of a novel by Dostoevsky. Eisenberg stars as an ordinary man who slowly loses his grip on reality when he encounters his doppelgänger, and we've now got our first look at ...

Certainly feels like the director and producer who has only delivered in mainstream items (Soul Food, Men of Honor, Beauty Shop, Notorious) is trying on a new hat of sorts with the spunky titled The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete. George Tillman Jr.’s latest appears to tap into the more authentic, inner city borough pics featuring kids in survival mode a la Raising Victor Vargas or Chop Shop. Starring Anthony Mackie, Jeffrey Wright (pic on the left), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks (see tweet pic top right) and a pair of first-time on the big screen young thesps in the lead roles, filming took place during the summer, has been post-production since late August and features tech crew work by the likes of Production Designer Jane Musky (Why Stop Now) and Cinematographer Reed Morano (For Ellen).

I know you can hardly contain your excitement for Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, but the most interest rating for me today was the PG-rating for Sony Pictures's The Swan Princess: Christmas. I'm not sure I've ever seen a PG-rated film head in to the appeals process and I've been doing these articles for a long time. Other than that, what follows are the latest MPAA ratings from Bulletin #2237. #Holdyourbreath Rated R For strong bloody violence, sexual content, language and some drug use. Bigfoot County Rated R For pervasive language and a brief sexual assault. Down The Shore Rated R For language and some drug use. Electrick Children Rated R For language including brief sexual references. Escape Fire: The Fight To Rescue American Healthcare Rated PG-13 For some thematic material. Girls Against Boys Rated R For violence, some sexual content/nudity and language. A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles...

In Why Stop Now, Jesse Eisenberg plays Eli, an outcast who is every inch as nerdy and bad with women as he is remarkably talented (so, in terms of roles played by Eisenberg—the usual). In Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner’s new film, he is a piano prodigy who is one audition away from getting into the most elite music school in the country, and thusly, one step away from escaping his miserable, deadend life. His road block? His drug-addicted mother, Penny (Melissa Leo). Add in the town’s local drug dealers, Sprinkles and Black (played by Tracey Morgan and Isiah Whitlock),...

Everyone waits until the year is over to compile their “Best of whatever” movie lists. This has become a mundane practice. Time for a bit of a change, kids. Six new players from last week all found spots on every part of the bench (list). Some, such as ParaNorman, got to sit right next to the coach because of their stellar play. Others, like the overrated Why Stop Now, found their way toward the end of the pine, specifically, sitting on the floor with a towel. And then there’s the unknowns in Robot & Frank, who hustle with their limited talent and impress the coaching staff. Everyone gets a shot, [ Read More ]...

Originally titled Predisposed after the short it was based on, Why Stop Now made a splash at this years Sundance where it caught the attention of IFC Films at the film’s world premier. Riding the line between addiction drama and drug infused comedy, the film centers on Eli (Jesse Eisenberg) as he tries to escape his drug addicted mother (Melissa Leo) by putting her in rehab, which would ultimately free him to pursue a top-notch musical education. All he needs to do is get her high first. The problem is, she owes her dealer (Tracy Morgan) a nice little sum, and he wants them both to help him score a new deal before hooking her up. Within this wacky adventure is a soulful contemplation on redemptive quality of art and the importance of family, no matter how wretched they might be.

It's do or die this weekend for Sylvester Stallone and his cohorts as they try to prove that the more washed up action stars you throw at a movie, the better it will be. While the expanded roles of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis are expected to push The Expendables 2 to the top of the box office quite easily, I wouldn't count out ParaNorman, the stop-motion animated film from the same studio that did Coraline. It also has to compete with Sparkle, featuring the last on-screen appearance of the late Whitney Houston, and The Odd Life of Timothy Green starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Garner. In select theatres, we also have David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, Craig Zobel's Compliance, and the indie sci-fi dramedy Robot & Frank starring Frank Langella. What will you be watching this weekend? Jesse Eisenberg isn't like typical celebrities. For starters, he makes his own phone calls.
"Hi, this is Jesse," Eisenberg said as normal as humanly possible when HuffPost Entertainment answered the actor's call earlier this week. Eisenberg was phoning from England to discuss the indie comedy "Why Stop Now," in which he co-stars opposite Oscar winner Melissa Leo.
"It seemed like such an ideal opportunity," Eisenberg said of the film. "Just knowing her acting, I was really interested."
Eisenberg and Leo were working on "Why Stop Now" for quite a while before meeting up on the awards circuit in 2010, when he was Oscar nominated for "The Social Network" and she for "The Fighter." (Leo would eventually win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.)
"When we were together at all these silly parties over the course of a few months, I had already been working on the movie for two years," Eisenberg said.

For Oscar-winning actress Melissa Leo, the experience of making a movie is almost as important as the end result. Take, for example, her new indie, “Why Stop Now,” based on the 2008 short film “Predisposed,” in which she also had a starring role: Leo cultivated an important working relationship during the quick shoot. “The thing that leaps to my mind about that less-than-a-month last summer: Jesse Eisenberg, Jesse Eisenberg and Jesse Eisenberg,” she told Moviefone during a recent chat ahead of the film's August 17 release. “I knew the first time I met him that there was a great hope that he'd play my son in the film,” she said. ”[I would have been upset] if anybody else would have ended up playing that boy, because he was so perfect for it, the maternal instinct I had for him the second I met him, and the respect and the admiration.” As luck would have it, Eisenberg would...

There’s not a whole lot of forward momentum in “Why Stop Now?” which is a surprise considering the immediacy-baiting title. Though the film takes place within the span of one day, the narrative feels truncated, allowing for connections to form, and then sever, over the course of twenty-four hours. It's well-acted, certainly, though these performances belong in a film with sharper pacing, one that breathes easily. But, this directorial debut from Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner breathes like a frequent smoker: in fits and starts, peppered with coughs and dry heaves. Jesse Eisenberg, probably playing slightly younger than he can manage, is Eli Smith, a high school piano prodigy with one shot to get into a prestigious university. With one audition left to master, he only needs to complete a few menial tasks: take his little sister to school, pick her up later, and drop Mom (Melissa Leo) off at rehab.

There's a reason Melissa Leo has 13 films tentatively scheduled for some kind of release between now and 2014: "I like to work," Leo told HuffPost Entertainment. "I just like to work."
No kidding. From indies like "Francine" to awards contenders like "Flight," Leo is becoming a permanent fixture at the multiplex here in 2012. Out this week is the indie comedy "Why Stop Now," where Leo stars opposite Jesse Eisenberg, Tracy Morgan and Isiah Whitlock Jr. The film -- which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in January -- shows off a lighter side of Leo, who is best known for her serious roles in films like "Frozen River," "Mildred Pierce" and "The Fighter," the latter of which won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

August isn't starting off delivering megahits, but some generally acceptable results can be found if you squint as The Bourne Legacy didn't blow the doors off, The Campaign overperformed based on expectations and Hope Springs managed to wrangle in its target audience. Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 9 Weeks In A Row The Bourne Legacy The Bourne Identity opened with $27.1 million in 2002 when it was essentially an unknown quantity. Looking over the month of August 2012 there are four movies I've already seen, so I can't necessarily pretend to anticipate them. To be entirely honest, I originally attempted to make this a list of my top ten most anticipated films for the month, but simply couldn't. To that point, five was even a stretch considering Lawless was among my "already seen." But instead of a top four I scrounged and came up with a fifth place feature to make it a nice round list of five. As for the films I've seen, along with Lawless (my review from Cannes here), I've already seen Hope Springs, The Odd Life of Timothy Green and ParaNorman. So those four you won't find below. August is a curious month, it's a late Summer and early Fall dumping ground, but that doesn't mean it's a month to be overlooked. Last year August brought us Bellflower,...

Yes, Jesse Eisenberg and Melissa Leo have made their first film together with "Why Stop Now." But while they are both known for being solid dramatic actors, the feature debut from writing and directing pair Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner finds them exercising their excellent comic skills instead. Co-starring Tracy Morgan, "Why Stop Now" tells the story of Eli (Eisenberg), a piano prodigy who is getting ready for an audition that will determine his future and career. However, his responsibilties to his sister and drug-addicted mother (Leo) may get in the way. Given the simple task of dropping off his Mom at rehab, things take an unexpected turn, forcing him to enlist the help of an unlikely ally, her drug dealer Sprinkles (Morgan). The day spirals downhill quickly, and the hapless team must collaborate every step of the way to battle their own demons and get Eli out of the rabbit hole.

As another work week draws to a close, we’ve got four new trailers to help get you through your Friday afternoon. Read on for previews of some cool upcoming features. We kick things off with a new trailer for the IFC comedy Why Stop Now?. Jesse Eisenberg headlines this quirky laugher as a young man trying to get his mother (Melissa Leo) into rehab before his big piano audition. Unfortunately, she can’t get in – and Eisenberg finds himself spending the day working for his mom’s dealer (Tracy Morgan) – with funny results. Eisenberg still seems to only play one kind of character (just like Michael Cera), but if you like seeing him as a socially awkward misfit geek, you’ll probably enjoy this clip. You can catch Why Stop Now? today on iTunes...

Jesse Eisenberg has the market on frazzled, neurotic young intellectual juuuust about cornered but with movies like Zombieland, The Social Network and 30 Minutes or Less, he showed a willingness to open that caricature up to nuance, and often R-rated comedic situations, and we've come to look forward to any movie he's a part of.
His next movie, now that Woody Allen's To Rome With Love in is theatres, is Why Stop Now, where he plays a piano prodigy trying to bring his mother (Melissa Leo) to rehab but finds some major hurdles in the form of a re-up and pick-up and is ultimately forced to join drug dealer Sprinkles (Tracy Morgan) on a wild chase where basically everything goes wrong.
The trailer, which just premiered, has some genuine laughs and with direction and script by newcomers Ron Nyswaner and Phil Doring, perhaps we're witnessing the birth of a new power duo.

Don't you hate it when you're a piano prodigy and you want to check your mother into rehab but instead get caught up helping her drug dealer, all before you audition for a prestigious music program? That everyday occurrence is the story behind Why Stop Now?, the upcoming dramedy from newcomer Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner (screenwriter Philadelphia), who based the movie on their 2008 short Predisposed. The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year — back when it was still titled Predisposed — after which IFC Films picked up the distribution rights.
Why Stop Now? certainly boasts an impressive cast. Academy Award nominee Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) plays Eli, the aforementioned piano prodigy, while Academy Award–winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) plays his mother and Emmy nominee Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) plays Sprinkles, the drug dealer who puts Eli to work interpreting Spanish for him during a business transaction in the movie's first trailer.

Why Stop Now has its trailer up, courtesy of Film Junk, and it appears to be continuing in the vein of so many other Sundance Film Festival darlings with fairly big name casts and off-kilter escapades. The indie dramedy stars Jesse Eisenberg, Melissa Leo, and Tracy Morgan with Ron Nyswaner and Phil Dorling directing. Eisenberg plays Eli, a young virtuoso pianist trying to check his mother, Penny (Melissa Leo), into re-hab the same day as a big audition.

2010 was a good year for Jesse Eisenberg and Melissa Leo. While Eisenberg was wowing audiences with his performance in The Social Network, Leo was simultaneously turning heads for her role as an overbearing, white trash mother in The Fighter. And Tracy Morgan, well, Tracy Morgan is insane. So watching this trio team up in Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner’s new comedy, Why Stop Now, should be something of a treat; especially since the powers that be seem to have cast each actor in roles that place them firmly in their comfort zones. Eisenberg is always at his best when he’s in over his head and high strung, and his role here as a mild-mannered music student who’s forced into the drug trade due to issues regarding his high-maintenance and drug-addicted mother seems to give him ample opportunity to stutter his words and look around nervously. Similarly, it was Leo’s portrayal of a crazy...

The first trailer has been released for a new comedy called Why Stop Now which stars Jesse Eisenberg, Tracy Morgan and Melissa Leo. The movie premiered up at Sundance, but I didn't get a chance to see it while I was up their. It looks like a good movie though, and I've heard good things about it from people that have seen it. It looks like a movie worth checking out!

Jesse Eisenberg, Melissa Leo and Tracy Morgan might seem like a strange group of actors to assemble for a project, but first-time directors Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner seem to have put them to good use based on the first theatrical trailer for their indie "Why Stop Now."
The flick, which premiered at Sundance, stars Eisenberg as a piano prodigy who finds his big audition for a prestigious music school scheduled on the same day that he's supposed to check his drug-addicted mother (Leo) into rehab. She is denied access due to a mistake, and so they come up with the hair-brained idea to get her high in order to prove to the rehab center that she needs to be admitted. They go to her drug dealer, Sprinkles (Morgan), who ends up convincing them to work for him for a day in order to get the drugs they need. Needless to say,...

John Hawkes looks to turn in another superb, understated performance in Arcadia. The story revolves around Hawkes' distressed father who packs up his three kids and moves them cross-country to Arcadia, California. What starts out as a regular ole road trip takes a turn when the children start asking questions about where their mother is. Is their father kidnapping them or is he not telling them about an unexpected, bitter divorce? Arcadia has screened at a number of festivals this year, but currently doesn't have a U.S. distributor, thus no current release date. Why Stop Now finds a college piano prodigy (Jesse Eisenberg) who gets caught up in a bizarre drug-run with his strung-out mom (Melissa Leo) and a drug dealer named Sprinkles (Tracy Morgan)....

With his perpetually tweaking Ocd personality, "Social Network" Oscar-nominee Jesse Eisenberg always gets the most cinematic mileage out of dropping himself into super-frantic situations, i.e. robbing a bank ("30-Minutes or Less") or hunting the undead ("Zombieland").
After already having played a drug mule in "Holy Rollers," Eisenberg's neuroticism is about to go full-tilt boogie in "Why Stop Now," the trailer for which just debuted via Yahoo! Movies.
The story finds Eisenberg's piano prodigy Eli having to check his mother Penny (Oscar-winner Melissa Leo) into rehab the same day as his big Juilliard audition. The pressure cooker really starts bubbling when the clinic refuses to check his insurance-less mom in unless she's under the influence.
Enter Tracy Morgan's drug dealer and a whole host of manic, oddball situations and illegal substance transactions that snowball into one lunatic day. Oh, and the trailer promises at least one scene of Eisenberg on Oxycodone,...

Here's the trailer for another Sundance film getting distribution this summer called Why Stop Now (it previously went under the title Predisposed). The film stars Jesse Eisenberg as a piano prodigy named Eli who is trying to check his mother (Melissa Leo) into rehab, but they run into complications when they are forced to prove that she has a drug problem. After paying a quick visit to her drug dealer (Tracy Morgan), they end up being taken along on a zany adventure -- all on the same day as Eli's big audition. Hey, what are the odds?? The movie is directed by Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner, the latter of which wrote the Tom Hanks drama Philadelphia, believe it or not. It looks to be a fairly typical indie dramedy in many ways, although with Tracy Morgan involved the tone is definitely a little goofier than you might expect. Why Stop Now...

Academy Award nominee and Michael Cera’s stunt-double, Jesse Eisenberg, will be starring in the new indie comedy Why Stop Now, which looks a lot like Little Miss Sunshine, except with even more drugs. Melissa Leo plays Eisenberg’s drug-addict mother, but they won’t let her into rehab because she’s not high enough (which sounds goofy at first blush, but makes a lot of sense, when you think about it). Eisenberg’s gotta get her to hit bottom, so they visit her dealer, as played by Tracy Morgan, and hilarity ensues. Dig:
Okay, for openers, I officially announce that the Cera/Eisenberg crack I made above will be the last time I compare the two. For one thing, it’s getting a bit hacky making those jokes. And for another, however similar they may be, I respect both the guys as actors, despite the fact that they’ve...

IFC Films acquired North American rights to the Sundance indie dramedy titled, which was titled Predisposed, but will now be called Why Stop Now, with the tagline, "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Rehab," as the first official poster shows. Tracy Morgan stars in the film, alongside Melissa Leo, Jesse Eisenberg, Tanya Wright, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. In the film, Morgan plays a hapless drug dealer named "Sprinkles" opposite Eisenberg's character, who happens to be a piano prodigy; the film centers around their relationship. Co-written by Philip Dorling (he directed it as well) and 1994 Oscar-nominee for...

After a brief pause from acting in the past year, actor Jesse Eisenberg is slowly finding his way back onto cinema screens, most recently in Woody Allen's latest, “To Rome With Love.” That isn't to say the actor's been lounging off his Fincher cash though, as a first glimpse from his starring Sundance entry, as well as details of his second off-Broadway-penned effort, have shown up to provide two different sides to the actor's work. Before working with Woody, it was Ruben Fleischer's comedy “30 Minutes or Less” that saw Eisenberg working his jittery energy into the lead role, and it appears the actor will return to similar ground with “Why Stop Now?,” the Phil Dorling/Ron Nyswaner film that premiered at Sundance back in January. Eisenberg plays a piano prodigy struggling to check his loving mother (Melissa Leo) into rehab while also making a prestigious audition, but when...

It's a far cry from "The Social Network" or Woody Allen's recent hit "To Rome With Love," but Jesse Eisenberg makes an indie splash back to the big screen with Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner's "Why Stop Now," a Sundance ensemble comedy previously known as "Predisposed." Also starring Melissa Leo and Tracy Morgan, the film follows a piano prodigy (Eisenberg) and his drug-addicted mother, Penny (Leo), who turn to a drug dealer (Morgan) when Penny is unable to enter rehab. The film was a late entry at Sundance earlier this year. It hits stateside on August 17 in limited theaters. Check out the just-released trailer below:...

Jesse Eisenberg’s transition from humorous, intellectual indies like The Squid and the Whale to more mainstream comedies has proven a rocky one. While he landed a hit with Zombieland, his other attempt at wackiness, 30 Minutes Or Less, flopped miserably. But it looks like he’s giving the touchy genre another try – only, in dramedy from – with Why Stop Now.
A trailer for the Sundance selection has hit the web, and the feature debut from director, Phil Dorling - who co-directed along with the film’s screenwriter, Ron Nyswaner – seems confused as to what tone it wants to convey. Formerly titled Predisposed, it stars Eisenberg as a piano prodigy whose dysfunctional mother (Melissa Leo) endangers his chances at the audition of a lifetime. Because of her, he becomes involved with a drug dealer named Sprinkles (Tracy Morgan), and, I’m guessing, hilarity ensues from there. The trailer shows a more...
