Well done cross cultural comedy

Good movie. Found this a totally good laugh. It is a well told, humorous story of differing cultures and finding love. Characters well acted and production all around worthy of a watch. I recommend it.

A movie with unique flavor
lebam-1502730 May 2020
Vindaloo Empire is a film with many ingredients, mixed together to create a flavored story. Sid migrates with his mom and sister, leaving behind his friends and 'motorbike' to join his father in New Zealand, who is supposedly working as a successful accountant. The combination of humor, drama, and culture makes Vindaloo Empire unique. The characters move with the flow, never feeling sorry for themselves or giving up despite the difficulties they face in a new culture. Director Cristobal Araus Lobos seems to be having fun making this movie. At the same time, he is in full command, as he takes us on a journey worth watching.

A wonderful feel good movie with so much flavour and goodness.
evelyne-824 May 2020
This is a wonderfully told story that has so much going for it. The Indian culture, food cooking, and life suddenly thrust into New Zealand. The struggles this family suddenly has adapting, but always have a really good attitude, spice, and humor. This fish our of water also is well-acted and beautifully filmed. I loved the ensemble cast and the love story element. There is something for everybody in this wonderful indie film

Really enjoyed Vindaloo Empire - a lovely, worlds-collide culture-clash romantic comedy. It had some proper depth to it, with all of the charm you want out of an indie film.

Authentic and original...a great indie flick.
kennyhughes15 May 2020
I always enjoy an original and authentic story. This takes you into East Indian Culture and mixing with western. The locations and performances are all a great way to travel the world and get a diverse experience. The performances are good and nuances are all fascinating to me. The story is good...and I think of it as indie. It's basically a romantic comedy...but a family comedy and a world perspective. I say give it a try!

A romantic comedy with heart and depth, the story was enjoyable and enlightening. I appreciated the juxtaposition of two cultures, which provided the film opportunity to be both thought-provoking and humorous. The characters were likeable and the story engaging til the end. Worth checking out.

Indian and Kiwi Flick, Full of Surprising Laughs
GilbertS-8517 May 2020
Sid and his family move from New Delhi, India to Auckland, New Zealand, for a better life.

Of course, things don't go precisely the way Sid imagined. Cultures clash, people fight, and Sid must cook his way out of trouble. The acting is spot on, and the story unfolds as a kind of family-esk comedy. Or maybe it's a fish out water, romantic-esk comedy type story. Ah hell, it doesn't matter because it's sweet, full of heart, and surprising laughs.

Light Hearted Romantic Dramedy
JGReviews14 May 2020
Vindaloo Empire a light hearted romantic dramedy that's really enjoyable. The film deals with issues of culture and differences between India and New Zealand, while still being a fun ride about a guy falling for the new local girl he meets. I'd definitely recommend Vindaloo Empire.

Fun romance and culture clash
directortim201218 May 2020
This was an utterly charming movie that perfectly fit my mood. It was funny, sweet and quite beautifully done. It's hard to believe it's a little indie as it's honestly better than a lot of the big films out there. A great story, well written and acted, believable. Just a total pleasure!

Very original and entertaining comedy
antoinepana12 May 2020
Very enjoyable and mostly original rom-com. It's a truely interesting dive into the kiwi culture from the point of view of Sid, Indian from New Delhi. It's an eye opener on the difficulties that exist when trying to fit in a new culture, espacially for Indians with have a very strong culture background.

A fun story featuring Indian culture
grantpichla24 June 2020
This independent film may not have had the budget of larger productions, but it makes up for it with heart and storytelling. There are plenty of jokes throughout, and the story is clearly told from the mind of someone who has lived some of the situations. If you're looking for a cute rom-com that about something other than the Hollywood tropes, check this out!

Cultural Harmony
reightr31 May 2020
Aunanda Naaido and Alison Titulaer lead a terrific ensemble cast in this romantic dramedy filled with laughs, culture clash, and very relatable life-and-love struggles. Cristobal Araus Lobos' lively direction and Padma Akula's unique script showcase fresh voices in the global, independent film community, juxtaposing several cultures that American audiences, especially, may be unfamiliar with. At a moment when the world is more and more in need of cultural harmony, this feel-good movie couldn't come at a better time.

Sweet indie find!
noorfay913 June 2020
I really enjoyed this film. Although it's indie it doesn't feel amateur - it's genuine, full of heart and filled with authentic characters. The characters are not only funny, but also have a good sense of humor towards one another and give you the feeling like you're in on the joke.

Lighthearted entertainment funny movie
lbruhnca17 June 2020
In search of a new life full of girls, bikes, and curry. LOL. Why not. I really enjoyed this lighthearted funny film with the comedy rooted in the fish out of water, things don't go as planned scenarios for which we have all likely experiences at one point or another. Laughing in great medicine in a world with too much negativity and drama so my congratuatlions to these filmmakers who made a fun entertaining film. Looking forward to watching their next movies.

A fish out of Water
blacknblu24 June 2020
A take on the classic fish out of water with an Indian trying to adapt in New Zealand while finding a new passion for cooking. You will feel the need to order in from your local Indian restaurant after watching, preferably vindaloo cuisine.

Food, fun and full of heart! It reminds me of Hundred Foot Journey indie style. Love the acting in this fish-out-of-water story. Order some Indian food and enjoy. Definite recommend!

A fun story with a solid cast, script and direction
catia-ojeda17 June 2020
A great fish out of water story for those who love a mix of humor, drama, and the heart of every culture: food and cooking. Stars Aunanda Naaido and Alison Titulaer are great, along with the rest of the cast. Tightly and expertly directed by Cristobal Araus Lobos' and a solid, fresh script by Padma Akula. A great look at Indian and New Zealander cultures. Other than the sound design and recording, this is a top notch indie film.

There is some good laughs to be had!
I'm not very familiar with Indian or New Zealand Culture, so it was interesting seeing both sides. I found this film sweet and funny. You end up liking the characters as the film progresses. And there is some good laughs to be had!

Great fun
anand_raj_naidu22 July 2011
It is a story showing heart. It deals with difficult issues in a manner that the audience can enjoy and walk away reflecting on it. The performances were great.

The film begins with amazing shots of New Delhi, India where the lead character,Sid, and his family live. The viewer gets a brief intimate peek of a customary Indian home and the lifestyle that Sid and his family will be leaving behind.

The genre of the film would be appropriately categorized as a "romantic-dramatic comedy". It explores the dichotomy of relationship expectations between the Indian and Kiwi culture, while also tastefully taking the micki out of a traditional Indian household. There is a more serious side to the film in its portrayal of the hardships of an exceedingly qualified Indian worker trying to find a job opportunity in Auckland. The cultural and communication barriers prove to be defeating for Sid's father who has difficulties finding employment within his field.

Curry Munchers was successful in its transitions among the multi-genre'd story lines. Powerfully constructed characters set an immediate and comfortable tone from one scene to the next. Most importantly, the overall light hearted nature of this film made it memorable and agreeable. People of every demographic can enjoy this honest and powerful depiction of real life issues surrounding the multi-cultured youth and families of Auckland.
