Synthetic World
coadyy4 August 2011
For a small budget ($20,000 I think) the production value of this Sci-Fi action/thriller is extremely well done. I can only imagine what they could've done with a $20M budget. The rich color palette of the cinematography creates the right amount of atmosphere to the story. Especially in regards to Katherine Banting's character. The special FX were well done for the budget constraints. When the girl reaches the building's roof and looks up into a night sky of flying cars, we see through her POV (cybernetic eyes) and realize she is more than human. I was completely drawn in to Katherine's character and hope one day to see the entire story played out on the big screen.

Hints at a complex world
greg-13726 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Synthetic World is the kind of science fiction that really sparks my imagination. Relying minimally on dialog, we get a glimpse into a unique (if dark) future world that is likely far more complex and nuanced then the film has time to address. The film leaves room for speculation, inviting the audience to fill in the gaps.

In addition, it's technically well executed in all areas. The effects, though simple, are seamlessly integrated and never took me "out" of the action.

My only criticism would be that it's conclusion is perhaps a bit too vague. I'd have appreciated knowing a bit more about the characters, particularly the old man in the limo. It's also disconcerting in that there is no real "antagonist" in this; we never know who the good guy is. Bit then again, perhaps that is intentional!

I look forward to more work by this director.

An excellent film! Synthetic_World is a very small film that feels huge. Not only does it capture loads of action but also creates its own world, this in particular elevated my interest in this movie. I enjoyed figuring out what these characters doing and getting absorbed in the setting and mood that was built.

With a movie this length you really don't expect the amount of intensity that is packed into this. I found the editing to be superb and the effects top notch. It feels like the intro to something much larger in scope. I look forward to seeing more from from this director and hopefully a feature length version of Synthetic World is in the works.

Worth a look

Slickly made and put together, this was a pretty damn good short film. Though, if you've read or watched enough Science Fiction, the ideas presented here won't really seem that new to you but that should not deter you from watching this. While there is very little dialogue, actions truly speak louder than words here. The opening text crawl (while reminiscent of Blade Runner)sets up the plot and the world you are about to see, but the story unfolds quite smoothly and almost expertly afterwards through the characters actions. Not once are you lost with what is happening in front of you. It sucks that this was only a short film, I would have loved to have seen this as a feature.

A great science fiction about how in the future synthetic humans prize organic organs

I am a huge fan of science fiction so when I watched Synthetic_World I was pleased to see that even with a budget under 20k a sci-fi short can deliver big budget effects and keep you on the edge of your seat. This film sold me on the special effects and editing pace but it lost me as far as the script. Looking over the notes of the film the script seems to have been dictated by the Philips Parallel Lines Contest. Despite the absent script there is a great story hidden between the lacking dialogue. There was a great deal of camera movement and quick edits which keeps your attention. In this short they pay attention to detail that really helps you get into the synthetic world... with guns that use electronic blast and there is a cute girl whose eyes that flash and control machines.. and the coolest thing is the flying cars in the end which really went beyond my expectations. If you can get past typical cliché of synthetic people having blue blood, you'll be impressed.

What a rush!

When I clicked the link to Synthetic_World, I was blown away with what an almost 6 and half minutes long movie could pack. It had my heart racing in 2 seconds & my heart beat was elevating with every second. I had to watch it over & over again because there was so many details. I kept seeing things I didn't notice the first time I watched it. With every replay, it kept me at the edge of my seat. I'm an undercover Sci-Fi fan, and this was definitely a yummy treat. I am dying to see more! It was beautifully directed, the acting was captivating, and the use of symbolism magnificently tickled my nerdy pickle. Bravo! Thank you for an exhilarating adventure.

Synthetic_World Review

After watching this film it left me wanting more. The acting was very believable and the concept made me feel it could actually occur in the distant future.

I also loved the directors visuals in showing the raw emotion on each of the characters. You could really get the feel of the emotions that were running through their bodies.

Another thing I really enjoyed about the movie was the visual effects. It wasn't over the top at all, in a way it was just the perfect blend.

This director is definitely on his way to bigger and better things. One day I know I'll be able to say, I was lucky enough to see and review one of his first feature films.

Great Film!

This film is really a diamond in the rough! The acting was believable and the concept of a future where real organs are rare is something that is not only brilliant, but also holds a possibility of truth!

The way that the actors made you believe that they were slightly robotic was spot on and it had me sucked into the movie the entire time.

The post production value of it was also very well done, you could see that they spend a lot of time in post work to accomplish the great effects.

Keep an eye out for this director! He is going to be someone that is going to take the movie world by storm!
