The lastest in casting news for the upcoming fourth season of the BBC/Starz’s Torchwood is the addition of Mekhi Phifer (ER, Close Quarters, Lie To Me). Phifer scored the role of Rex Matheson that up-and-coming actor Enver Gjokaj (Dollhouse, Stone) and CW alum Chad Michael Murray (Lies In Plain Sight, One Tree Hill) had also been vying for.
Phifer’s character Rex is a “sharp-as-nails, funny-as-hell, tough-as-rawhide CIA agent who cares less about making a good impression than he does making a lasting one.” He joins the surviving members of the Torchwood crew, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) along with another new character of Ester yet to be cast.
Arlene Tur (Crash, Eat Pray Love), pictured above, has also been cast in a recurring role as surgeon, Vera Juarez.

"Torchwood" has cast the CIA agent to join Captain Jack in its upcoming season on Starz -- and it's not someone who was rumored to be up for the role a couple months back.
Former "ER" star Mekhi Phifer, late of Fox's "Lie to Me," has been cast in a lead role opposite John Barrowman and Eve Myles, Deadline reports. He's playing a CIA agent named Rex Matheson, who "become[s] embroiled in the Torchwood legend and investigate[s] what Torchwood is or was," as creator Russell T. Davies put it last summer. Rex is described as a character who's rising in the agency's ranks and has a very sharp sense of humor.
In casting Phifer, Starz and the BBC (which are co-producing the new season) have gone in a different direction than what was reported earlier in the fall, when "Dollhouse's" Enver Gjokaj and former "One Tree Hill" star Chad Michael Murray...

Exclusive: Mekhi Phifer is set to star opposite John Barrowman and Eve Myles in the upcoming fourth season of sci-fi drama Torchwood, which Starz is co-producing with the BBC for a run on both networks. Phifer joins original Torchwood stars Barrowman, who plays time agent/con man Captain Jack Harkness, and Myles, who plays ex-police officer Gwen Cooper. The Lie to Me alum will play the third lead, Rex Matheson, a CIA agent, a fast-tracked high-flyer with a lethal sense of humor who starts to feel his mortality when his life is put in danger. In addition to his co-starring turn on Fox's Lie to Me last season, Phifer, repped by Wme and Brookside, was a regular on NBC's ER. He also recently signed on for the Lifetime action film Close Quarters. Torchwood recently cast Crash actress Arlene Tur in a recurring role.

Harvey Fierstein is joining the cast of Broadway’s La Cage Aux Folles, according to a press release from the production. The Tony Award-winner will star as Albin. Appropriate, since Fierstein wrote the book on La Cage Aux Folles. No, really, he did.
In other, sadder stage news, the producers of Next To Normal announced via press release that the Broadway show will play its final performance Jan. 16, 2011.
Bette Midler is set to star in a 70-minute New Year’s Eve special called Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On. Not when it comes to this one. [Variety]

2 bits of TV casting and a director hire worth mentioning…
First – Tisha Campbell-Martin joins Chris Payne Gilbert and Ally Walker to star in Lifetime’s drama pilot Exit 19, which follows a single mother (Walker) as she juggles demanding personal and professional lives (she’s an NYPD homicide detective).
Tisha Campbell-Martin will play her “smart and vivacious” NYPD partner.
The project was reportedly originally developed at CBS for the 2007-2008 season; then, Geena Davis was going to play the single mother police detective, and Rosie Perez was to be her partner.
Second – Mekhi Phifer joins Catherine Bell and Anthony Michael Hall in another Lifetime project – this one, an action thriller film genre titled Close Quarters, about a suburban wife and mother with a secret dark past (she was a special-ops agent), which she’s forced to unleash after her husband is mysteriously kidnapped.

I’m almost 100% certain that I have the Lifetime Channel on my Dish network package, but, um, I have no idea what channel it’s on. Really, it’s never occurred to me to “check out what’s playing on the Lifetime channel”. But that might change after this news that former “Jag” babe Catherine Bell is getting her own action-adventure TV show called “Close Quarters” on the female-friendly cable net. The show will be produced by Gale Anne Hurd, who is no stranger to action, having produced more than her share of testosterone-heavy flicks like the “Alien” and “Terminator” films. In “Close Quarters”, Bell will play Abby, described as “a happy suburban wife and mother who has been concealing her dark past as a military-trained special-ops agent. But when her husband is mysteriously kidnapped, Abby’s past returns to haunt her and she must risk everything to protect her...

Exclusive: Lifetime, which has built its original movie brand with biopics and films based on headline-making true stories, is venturing into the action thriller genre with Close Quarters, a telefilm from producer Gale Anne Hurd and Sony TV. Lifetime star Catherine Bell (Army Wives) toplines the movie, about Abby, a happy suburban wife and mother who has been concealing her dark past as a military-trained special-ops agent. But when her husband is mysteriously kidnapped, Abby's past returns to haunt her and she must risk everything to protect her daughter and save the man she loves. "It's turning her role in Army Wives on its head -- in this she is a capable special ops agent with a military background and expertise in technology who holds her ground in the action area," Hurd said, adding that the film for the first time will showcase Bell's extensive martial arts training. Tapped to...
