Does not succeed with the supernatural aspects

"Dôjôji" is a Japanese, 19-minute short film from 1976, so this one has its 40th anniversary this year. It was written and directed by Kihachiro Kawamoto, one of the most successful Japanese (animation) filmmakers in the 1970s. His work here had me impressed for a little while as I believe this started off in a decent manner and the animation was fine too. But sadly, when the focus moves away from the man and woman as protagonists of the story that we actually see, it goes south pretty quickly. After the first 7-8 minutes, it gets quickly worse and the longer it went the less I cared for the characters and the story. Quite a shame as there was definitely potential for more in this little movie. It was also fairly difficult to understand the story for the most part. I have to give it a thumbs-down. Not recommended.
