The Lincoln Assassination (1995)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Tom Berenger narrates this two-part documentary from The History Channel about the assassination of our 16th President. The documentary starts off with Lincoln sharing a dream he had that he walked down from the upper side of the White House into a funeral being held where it turned out to be his. Days later the President was assassinated by actor John Wilkes Booth and throughout the 100-minute running time we see what made Licoln so special and what Booth thought killing him would accomplish. Part one of the documentary starts off with Lincoln's run for President, the battles of the Civil War and then the final days leading up to him attending the theater for the final time. Part two of the documentary covers the actual assassination, the fall out across the country and then tracking down the killers. If you're an expert on the assassination then it's highly doubtful you're going to learn anything you don't already know but if you're just vaguely familiar then this here should be the perfect film for you. For the most part this documentary does a terrific job at laying out all the details surrounding the President's death and not only are we given a great build-up to the event but the conclusion is also quite good as we hear the fate of the killer, the co-conspirators and of course the Lincoln family who had more tragedy to strike them in the coming years. Berenger's narration is extremely good throughout and we're given drawings as well as actual photos to show some of the things including the hangings. The experts on hand also discuss their thoughts on the matter and we also get to see some actual stuff from the events including the knife that was used in an attack and also the rope used on Mary Surratt.
