Evan Dickson wrote in for both Bloody Disgusting and Dread Central regarding an impromptu interview he did with co-directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, along with star Alex Essoe, about their film Starry Eyes, coming soon from Mpi’s Dark Sky Films.
Co-director and writer Dennis Widmyer explains the film, “It’s a horror/character study/body-horror/drama. It’s about an aspiring actress who is kind of desperate and she feels like she’s on the edge of not making it and she goes on a strange audition for a production company that turns out to be a cult. A satanic cult. They lure her in, and she starts to transform physically and mentally into something horrible.”
Alex Essoe, who plays the “Starry-Eyed” lead Sarah, elaborates, “There’s three distinct phases that I go through. It was extremely fun and very disturbing. She’s in a place that a...

We caught up with actor and producer Marc Senter over the weekend to chat with him regarding his role in Grace director Paul Solet’s BlackBoxTV short Going Down as well as his growing musical inclinations and more. Read on!
Senter, who came to horror audiences’ attention with his starring role of “Ray Pye” in Chris Sivertson’s 2006 indie darling The Lost, and who subsequently has appeared in Darren Lynn Bousman’s The Devil’s Carnival and Simon Rumley’s Red, White & Blue, riffed on his collaboration with Solet on the Angel Heart’esque Going Down.
“Paul and I met a handful of years back,” said Senter, who portrays “Gunther Clearly” opposite actress Dinora Walcott in Going Down, of the collaboration. “We've wanted to work together for a while now so it was a blast finally getting the opportunity to do so. Aside from being a great director, Paul's also a really positive guy.

It's been a while since we last heard from Paul Solet, director of the critically lauded indie horror Grace. While he's had some acting parts since then on the directing front we haven't seen Solet at work since Grace, actually, a gap of a little over three years. Which is a shame, and a fact that Solet has rectified with a new short titled Going Down directed for Black Box TV with Marc Senter (Red White And Blue, Brawler) and Dinora Alexander.Gunther Cleary has his whole day mapped out, but a simple elevator ride shows him that life doesn't always go as planned.Take a look at the short below!...

Brothers Charlie (Nathan Grubbs) and Bobby (Marc Senter) Fontaine are part of an underground, mob-run fighting competition held on New Orleans riverboats. Charlie, the older, more stable of the two, has a steady job in construction and a serious girlfriend (Pell James). Bobby is a directionless playboy who is involved in several shady odd jobs, many of them mob-related. The siblings are the progeny of a local fighting legend and are respected by their late father’s peers and the old school mobster hierarchy. Though both brothers enjoy a surface celebrity, neither has been able to achieve much beyond a working class existence.
When debtors go after Bobby, his protective brother ends up with a broken leg while defending him. Recovering from his injury, Charlie marries his girlfriend Kat – a timid, unmotivated woman...

In Brawler, two brothers face a devastating personal betrayal and gear up to fight to the death. Based on actual events, the story takes place, where else, on a river boat that features a mob-run fight club. This clip features Bryan Batt (from Mad Men) as Fat Chucky, delivering a bit of friendly advice to brother Bobby Fontaine (played by Marc Senter). Check it out for yourself: What? He calls ‘em like he sees ‘em. Not a big deal. And the dude’s name is Fat Chucky. If you can’t take that seriously, what can you? So the acting from Senter’s end is a little stiff and uneasy. Let’s hope his talent lies more in his fists than in his delivery. Brawler is out on VOD now and hits DVD/Blu-ray September 18th.

USA, 2011
“As a kid, I had a record with the story of Cain and Abel on it. I used to play that record all the time – it really creeped me out.” – Chris Sivertson
Brawler is a ferociously original film built on the bones of very old stories – some of the oldest in literary history. It is a part of a new sub-genre of films including Bellflower and Another Earth that are “a complicated dance between what I guess you could call the traditionally more masculine [genre] storytelling and this more feminine, intimate human drama” as Brit Marling, writer and star of Another Earth explains it.
Or to put it another way, all three films are narratives about the most twisted, fucked-up relationships humanly possible, framed in the context of a genre narrative.

Ricky D, Michael Ryan and Edgar Chaput are quite familiar with the Fantasia Film Festival, having attended the event for years (some of us since the very beginning); so we thought it would be wise to list our favorite films from the 2012 line up. Enjoy!
Edgar Chaput’s Top 3
3-Game of Werewolves (2012, Juan Martinez Moreno)
A review for this film has already has already been published (link here), but the short version is that director Martinez Moreno and his stellar cast deliver one of the most engaging, hysterical, action packed and wonderfully shot werewolf movies in years. Not this Wolf has a film involving these nightmarish hunters been so entertaining. Its greatest flaw is the script, which makes some bizarre decisions as to character motivations, yet any qualms about why certain people are doing what are squashed by the joy out of seeing Moreno’s interpretation of the universe of lycanthropy…...

The first thought that came to mind upon arriving to director Buddy Giovinazzo’s then-shooting supernatural horror flick Ginger on Sunday, December 18 of 2011 was, “This looks like some place Charles Manson would have frequented back in the Sixties.” As I was to find, I was correct in that assumption, and as it turned out, Giovinazzo himself, too, was working hard to add yet another creepy chapter to the location’s storied past alongside Ginger stars Marc Senter and Elissa Dowling.

The final audience numbers are yet to be confirmed, but Fantasia estimates it has welcomed more than 100,000 audience members in the past three and a half weeks. 150 international directors, actors and producers came to present their films and we had a great time meeting new faces and drinking the nights away with some of the filmmakers. I can’t stress how fun the festival is and highly I recommend our international readers who love genre cinema to one day travel here to Montreal, and check it out.

The 2011 Fantasia International Film Festival has come to an end and as usual was a rousing success with more than 100,000 audience members. In addition 150 international directors, actors, and producers presented their films at the fest. Read on for the wrap-up and winners from this year's various competitions.
From the Press Release: sThe festival opened with a bang with the Canadian premiere of Red State by director Kevin Smith. This was only the first in a long line of sensational special events that took place over the course of the festival. Among those was the incredible homage to the great John Landis (Burke And Hare), marked by the presentation of Fantasia’s new trophy “Le Cheval Noir.” Mirroring our strong launch, the festival closed with the Canadian premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s Don’T Be Afraid Of The Dark. Other memorable events included: the homage to André Link and John Dunning...

Director Chris Sivertson is something of a walking contradiction. He emerged on the scene with his 2005 adaptation of Jack Ketchum's The Lost, a dark indie that won Sivertson much love in the genre scene. He then that up with 2007 Lindsay Lohan starring effort I Know Who Killed Me. Which, I think it's safe to say, is rather a large change of pace. But Sivertson is back in the indie scene that originally embraced him with his latest effort, the underground fighting picture Brawler. Red White & Blue's Marc Senter takes the lead in the story of brothers fighting it out in illegal fights stages on a barge off the coast of New Orleans in the gritty picture soon to premiere at Fantasia.Want to...

Editor’s Note: Coincidentally, this post was supposed to be published in the early morning of July 14th. I noticed it wasn’t published after the first wave of Fantastic Fest films were announced.
Last year, I experienced my first Fantastic Fest. It was also my first film festival that I attended outside of St. Louis. My attendance meant a big deal for me, not only as a fan, but for the site as well. Not knowing when the official announcement for Fantastic Fest 2011 will be released, I can only assume it will be within the next couple of weeks as Fantastic Fest always released their first wave of films in mid-July. Beyond the break are some of my guesses on films that may or may not play – one of which is definitely playing.

Premiering at the Fantasia Film Festival in July, inside you'll find a tense teaser poster for The Lost director Chris Sivertson's new thriller that reteams him with actor Marc Senter. This time Senter acts as star and producer hiring Sivertson to write and direct Brawler, which is based on a true story. Described as in the vein of Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets, Brawler follows two brothers competing in an underground circuit of illicit New Orleans riverboat brawls, struggling to survive their opponents, the crime boss they work for, and ultimately, each other. Senter, who is a trained martial artists, will square off against his producing partner Nathan Grubbs (Privateer, Down in New Orleans ) in the ring. Senter also stars in Cabin Fever 2, and can be seen in Simon Rumley's SXSW festival hit Red White & Blue.

Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival, which will be held from July 14 to August 7, will kick off with Kevin Smith's Red State.
Fantasia also made the first announcement about the films that will be part of this 15th edition's line-up.
People can see the anthology film Theatre Bizarre. This coproduction between Canada, France, Germany, the UK, the USA reunites Richard Stanley (Hardware), Karim Hussain (La belle bête), Douglas Buck (Cutting Moments), Buddy Giovinazzo (Life Is Hot in Cracktown), David Gregory (Plague Town) and Tom Savini, as directors.
The festival will also hold the world premier of The Wicker Tree, from Robin Hardy. Moreover, a book launch is also expected because The Wicker Tree is based on the novel Cowboys for Christ, by Hardy.
As for a Canadian premiere, Ryoo Seung-wan's The Unjust will be screened. Besides, Ryoo will be invited by the festival's organizers to teach choreography for action films.

The Fantasia Film Festival is by far my favourite film festival in the world and I’ve been impatiently awaiting some news of what films they’ll be screening this year. Considered the world’s largest genre film festival and running over three weeks long, the event is celebrating it’s 15th edition this year and the lineup is already pretty incredible. In the past I’ve seen some of my favourite films premiere at the fest and last year I wrote up a list of the best films ever screened at the fest which you can read here. This year Kevin Smith’s Red State opens the festival and directors Robin Hardy (The Wicker Man) and Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) will be in the house to discuss the occult on film. The full lineup which includes 130-feature titles will be announced on July 7. For now here is the...

With Screamfest La celebrating its 11th anniversary this fall (the venerated Los Angeles film festival spearheaded by Rachel Belofsky runs October 14-23 in Hollywood, CA), the fest hosted another of its monthly mixers this past Thursday, March 12, and we were there to snap a few photos and chat with the filmmakers in attendance.
On hand for the event (which took place at Hollywood Boulevard’s tequila bar Te’Kila) were FX artist and reality TV star Frank Ippolito (who teased that his short flick ‘Night of the Little Dead’ is slated for a fest debut in the near future), Kiss Before the Slaughter director John Elfers, Hell’s Belles filmmaker Christian Ackerman, producer Drina Durazo and actor Luke Thompson.
Also in attendance were Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 actress Allison Kyler and that flick’s producer Chang Tseng and director (and Almost Human Efx guru) Robert Hall, the latter of whom...
