Joe Maplin has nothing to worry about at Chummy's.
Sleepin_Dragon21 February 2022
Father Brown, Inspector Mallory, Sergeant Goodfellow are all invited to a weekend at Chummy's Holiday Camp, naturally when they're there.....it's murder.

Divisive, you are either going to love it or hate it, and I'd say if you're having a bad day, you'll hate it. As I've not long had gas, I absolutely loved it.

It was as if Hi Dr hi was mixed up with Death in Paradise and Spitting Image. It was pretty funny, but there was an engaging enough crime.

No Sid, Bunty, Lady Felicia or even Mrs M (shock horror) it was great to see Sergeant Goodfellow almost step into the roll of Father Brown's assistant. I liked the setup.

We had caricatures of them all, Ted, Peggy, Pike and of course Gladys. Mavis was an almost cardboard cutout of the beloved Peggy Ollerenshaw, so desperate to be an orange (yellow) coat, and of course Mrs Chummy is like a mix of Gladys and The Queen from Spitting Image, I love how exaggerated her costumes were.

Some gorgeous costumes, amazing costumes throughout, it really did look nice.

The writer and production team clearly had a hoot with this one, and though it's one I don't think I'll return to frequently, but as a one off, it was a laugh, nice to see them trying something a little different.

Fun, 7/10.

I think it's an age thing
MissMinnie0913 January 2022
Ok I love father brown but this was by far the weirdest episode ever I think it's an age thing because my mum and Mark Williams are the same age and she had the same joyful look he did as she was watching it laughing and smiling throughout, she would remember the days of holiday camps and all the silly shenanigans that go on there and it would probably be nostalgic but I being in my 20s look in confusion and maybe a little horror at the rather silly episode Not for everyone and no my favourite but good nonetheless.

Chums

Warning: Spoilers
I love the description, "When Father Brown visits Chummy's holiday camp, it doesn't take long for someone to die-de-die.". Yes that's a send-up of the popular British sitcom Hi-de-Hi! That reigned supreme in the 1980s all those years ago.

Only three of the regular cast are in this one, with Mrs McCarthy sorely missed (her character is in Ireland). I guess this episode was produced in response to the pandemic, with limited contact and social distancing.

There are class and race issues in the originally accused murderer that is an undercurrent in the British holiday parks that Hi-de-Hi! Would be proud of.

What's remarkable about this episode is the high number of user reviews.

The Island of Dreams
Prismark108 February 2022
It is a case of Ho de Ho. The episode is very much as pastiche of the BBC sitcom Hi de Hi. There is even a room maid who wants to be a orange coat.

Father Brown, Sergeant Goodfellow, Inspector Mallory and his family all go to Chummy's holiday camp.

It is not long before there is a death. Majorie Chummy who opened the camp with her late husband is found dead.

Inspector Mallory arrests Mavis Jug but Father Brown reckons that some event in the past has come to haunt people in the present.

Unusually there is no Mrs McCarthy in this episode. It was a decent episode of Father Brown as he works with Goodfellow to find the culprit.

I did wonder just what kind of holiday camp this was. I think it was meant to be one of these indoors one and certainly not by the seaside.

There was a sly nod to Harry Potter. The Punch & Judy box had the name Professor Lockhart on it. Mark Williams appeared in the Harry Potter movies.

Covid Times

To be fair, filming during Covid Times I expect offers an abundance of challenges. This is not Father Brown's best season, but it IS still one of my favorite escapes. I'll hang in there hoping for better seasons to come!

Sadly, this is an episode to SKIP.

I think it must be the 1st episode ever that does not include Mrs McCarthy. Very few major characters & a crazy story. Fr Brown & Inspector Mallory at a holiday camp. Obviously a filler episode while filming during Covid Restrictions. Reminds me of prior least favorite episodes involving the Circus hypnotist, Jesters vigilantes, or ventriloquist Uncle Mirth.

Cotswolds by the Sea (NOT)
gflockley14 January 2022
Couldn't agree more with the other three reviewers. Worst Father Brown by far. Can't blame Sid or Sorcha Cusack for not wanting to be in it. Hi de Hi was pretty dire and I've seen it live. This was even worse than that!

And whoever heard of that type of holiday camp in the Cotswolds in the 50s? Where's the sea lol? Think they're beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Sorry Mark Williams, I've always liked you in Father Brown and I've made a couple of pilgrimages to my almost namesake Blockley, but this did you all a disservice!

Aaaagggghhhh!

Surely someone on the production staff would have stood up and said 'What are we doing? This is complete and utter crap!' I have the first 7 series on DVD and they're great, but this episode, good grief! What were they thinking?

Terrible

Really awful episode, poor unbelievable set/location, and the Inspector is more irritating than usual.

The plot lines are getting thinner, and repetitive.

Maybe it's time to rest this series.

Unrecognizable
mikelscholl9 February 2022
This season has been a wobbly drunken affair. But jaysus, we just drove off the rails. Not a Mrs. McCarthy, not a Syd, not a plot anywhere to be found, and not enough booze in the world. Clearly, this was a budget episode. A brood of overactors giving Inspector Mallory a run for his money. I'm a fan of Father Brown. But I prayed for a cozy mystery mass murder. Pardon the liturgical reference. The season is all up hill from here, right?

the worst
tlpme-681168 February 2022
I still watch the show but with episodes like this I'm wondering why? Jack Deam's portrayal of inspector Mallory just ruins most episodes where he has a fair amount of screen time. I was hoping they would do away with that character so that I could get back to enjoying the show as much as I did for the seasons he wasn't in it. That said. In addition this is horribly written terribly acted the continuity is off the direction is horrible. This is one of the few episodes where I was actually fast forwarding in hopes that it will get better. It doesn't.

Amateur hour at the holiday camp.

Without doubt this episode lets down every series that has gone before. If you haven't actually watched it yet my advice is simple - don't do it!

The worst Father Brown by far
ipadgraham11 January 2022
This is utterly ludicrous - it's obviously been copied from Hi-de-Hi quite brazenly. Even the characters are exactly the same. Whether the plot is any good or not is not relevant - I'm not watching until the end. The BBC is so scared of lack of diversity the character of Peggy (Mavis Jug) had to be played by someone of an ethnic minority. In my opinion this demolished the credibility of the Father Brown tv series - it's a disgrace to G K Chesterton.

I agree
tlw-3635311 May 2022
This was a bad episode. All the others I have seen, which are many, are so good. This was just odd. And kind of creepy. Agreed it does remind me of a Grantchester episode as someone else mentioned. And I could be wrong, but I think I saw a "era" mistake. If that is what you would call it. One or two shots show a smaller pool. This small pool appears to have a solar cover on it, the blue bubble kind we have now. Don't think they had those in the 50s.

Grantchester Rip-Off.
randallridgley9 February 2022
I thought I was experiencing deja vu, until I realized that this FB episode came across as a cheap rip-off of a Grantchester episode I'd seen in the past, that was done much better than this debacle!

parody?
drmique19 May 2022
This is remarkably bad... therefore, to account for my respect for the series (and the actors) I am assuming that for some reason (e.g., lost a bet, blackmail, a touch of the banshee 2-step) this is a parody, and not a serious attempt at an authentic FB episode, in search of some Razzie award. This review does not contain spoilers as... (the reader can complete the sentence).
