Every legend has a beginning. Even nightmares.
One Plus One Equals Two is like a darker version of Batman v Superman in animated form: here we have two titans Homelander and Black Noir fighting each other trying to outsmart the other when both of them are in the crossfires of Vought International and their ruthless scheming.

This evokes the DC Animated Universe somewhat, whilst having an aesthetic closer to some of DC's animated movies and parts of Invincible. This is helped by Homelander having a very 'Batman v Superman' like stand-off with Black Noir during the episode's climactic action sequence. It's very gruesome yet satisfying to see some greatly appreciated backstory on one of TV's greatest villains in recent memory.

One Plus One Equals Two adds up to lore-enriching storytelling for The Boys, and is easily amongst Diabolical's strongest instalments.

A strong season closer that expands a little on the backstory
RogerBorg5 March 2022
As with the other episodes featuring Homelander, the art style here is straight Westernised-anime, and decently done.

It's a straight up backstory episode covering (The) Homelander's reveal, his first mission and his relationship with Madelyn Stillwell and Black Noir.

Nothing complicated or unexpected, just solid reinforcement of the characters and setting. This is where I have to ding it slightly because it doesn't go beyond what we already knew or suspected. It's exactly on point, but I'd hoped for a little more nuance or twist.

Still, it doesn't put a foot wrong, and the voice performances are notably great, with Antony Starr doing a credible younger-version voice. Elisabeth Shue absolutely knocks her performance out of the park - it's hard to believe you're listening to a woman nearing 60 years old. They get solid support from the rest of the cast, who all know what they're doing.

Even the closing score is cleverly done with disjoints in the harmonies reflecting Homelander's increasing instability. That's a literally sound way to wrap up the season.

Good watch, ready for The Boys S3
amariaaron7 March 2022
Pretty straightforward. I wish we got a little more insight as to Noir's origin but it seems like they might be going the comic book accurate route with him.

When it comes to Homelander it's great to learn he wasn't always an murderous monster who didn't care about human life. It sticks with the whole idea of the Boys which is " if these things happened to you, why wouldn't you become completely awful?"

Homelander's Origin
AmosJAMcLovin5 March 2022
This show excels best when it focuses on the characters we know from the comics/show.

While other storylines are appreciated, this episode was the best one to end the season on.

It was great to get inside the mind of this character and learn that it doesn't take much to make him snap.

excellent Homelander Year One episode
Shadowboy_25cm10 March 2022
The final episode of this spin-off series is classical The Boys material following the canon of The Boys.

Homelander in one of his early solo missions.

Well crafted story, with great voice cast by actors of the original tv show The Boys, good animation and enough psychosis, dilemma, blood & loyalty to be a perfect end of this season to make us wish the third season of The Boys should start soon.

Very entertaining and great watch.

Highly recommended.

What the rest of the show should've been like.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is what I hoped the entire show was. We finally get to see another side of Homelander's origin, which is confirmed to be canon and set up season 3. We now understand Black Noir's role in The Seven, as the guy who keeps Homelander in check, which is a bit similar to the graphic novel but I'm pretty sure it'll be very different when we understand the full context of the character. I think after Season 2 of The Boys which was a bit weaker plot wise but stronger character wise, Homelander has potentially become one of the best TV Villains I've watched, and this short but great episode gives the character another dimension to hopefully see explored in the main. Series with a lot more time. We already know about his abuse and experimentation as a kid, but we get to see how badly this affected with him having severe PTSD and what looks like anger issues from it. At the time of the show I suppose he has had them more under control, but we realize at least at first he was trying to do good, which I think shows a great new angle at Homelander, who can too often seem fully evil. I think the gore is needlessly excessive at times in The Boys, but the way it was utilized here with Homelander's powers being too strong and accidentally hurting people was effective. Reminded me of how it was done in Invincible but in a darker way. So yeah, I honestly don't have that much to say about this episode, but what about the rest of the season?

Well I have mixed feelings. There's some cool concepts, the superhero couple, 90s cartoon, anime inspired episode, but they're mostly so cliched and basic it feels like wasted potential. I'm kinda confused what this show so going for, cause I thought this was supposed to be funny? I had like a few laughs, mostly from the Rick and Morty style episode from Justin Rolland which was actually creative and fun. But then there's multiple serious episodes, and it feels like they didn't know what they were doing. The anime inspired episode was totally serious, then why not have more variety in tone, cause half of it was more serious, maybe a little comedic, and the other half was trying way too hard to be funny and often failing. Not gonna bother mentioning the poop episode as I already reviewed it. Why couldn't we just have more episodes like 3 (the butcher one) and the finale building up the world? This just seems like something they quickly threw together without much effort except from the probably overworked animators (which were the saving grace for some episodes) to have something in between the extra long wait from Season 2 to 3.

It feels like The Boys has devolved into the media it criticizes on the show. Also it's needlessly edgy, there's so much swearing and sexual humor that don't fit with the episodes. Obviously with such a small runtime you can't do much with the stories, but aside from the stories feeling obviously rushed, most of the episodes also feel lazily written. I was hoping this was going to take place in the world of The Boys, as in it would be canon and build up the world in new and interesting ways, but the stuff that happens here completely goes against things we know, it just feels unbelievable and badly written to the point where it makes no sense and it actually would hurt the world building. Obviously none of it is canon except the last one, but then I ask what's the point of this? Like a few changes could've made episode 3 canon, the teens with crappy powers could work too, especially the Envision episode could tie into things and was interesting, though the episode was super predictable. Which was a problem with almost all the episodes.

I think the biggest example of this was the seventh episode, which had great animation, but a pretty dumb and cliched plot. So this old dude somehow steals some compound V for his dying wife, which gives her destructive powers she doesn't want, you get the obvious dialogue you'd expect and heard 50 times from these type of things before, Vought comes to get them, she drops them all- Wait, by the way, why is Vought portrayed so incompetently in these shorts? Like they do almost nothing right, heh. Anyways it all culminates in this monster coming out of the old lady, all the Vought soldiers being destroyed and then the old guy stops it with a taser?! Uh... what? Actually it turned out the old lady shot it at the same time but that genuinely confused me initially. So it seems his wife then sacrifices herself and we see her fly into a field... okay, maybe a little rushed? Like do you expect us to care from a cliched 10 minutes? Also I know I said I wasn't gonna mention it, but doesn't this plot have some of similarities to the fifth episode that shall not be named? It just seems like a complete lack of originality and actual effort put into the scripts of many of these. Almost the plots in the episodes are super forced, and I suppose they can get away with some things due to the runtime, but it still felt badly executed. Look at something like Smiling Friends, which came out recently, can accomplish with 10 minute episodes. Ultimately this was just a big lack of potential, and with it being barely movie length I wonder why did they settle with this? While The Boys: Diabolical doesn't affect almost anything in The Boys to hurt it, that also makes it disposable, as it's not good enough to stand on its own and the only tie-in is minimal. Overall, it had a few enjoyable episodes, some pretty bad ones, the animation was at least solid, so it just gets a mediocre 5.5/10 from me.

The Homelander
ezzedd6 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
An absolutely amazing season finale that provides the sick and twisted origin we all knew Homelander had in great fashion! Also the similarities between a death in this episode and the season 2 finale of the main show go hand in hand and in showing us Homelander and his Son Ryans darkest connection!

"The" Homelander Origin Story we deserved
rmpherwanihp23 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Watching this episode really made me think: could homelander have been this universe's Superman, even with his intense trauma? Probably not, given that even outside of the facility, homelander would still (as he did here) have to experience the pure corruption that is vought.

Good episode.

What I love about Homelander is the truth to his power and influence.

This was a great origin story to such a character, since it depicts most realistically, as far as emotions go, and most gruesomely , regarding to the visuals and story , the reality of white cishet male ego. The constant refusal to do the moral thing just because his feelings are being hurt from the constructive criticism he receives and the heinous acts that happen because of he's insistence on self unawareness.

Would love for it to be expanded upon later on.

Black Noir V Homelander: Dawn Of Injustice.
Pjtaylor-96-1380446 April 2022
'One Plus One Equals Two (2022)' depicts the canonical first mission of Homelander, seeing him transform from a good-intentioned hero into the callously violent villain we all know and hate. The piece plays with audience expectation in a couple of interesting ways, even though its ending is pretty much a foregone conclusion. It's a brutal and well-paced insight into the main antagonist of 'The Boys (2019 -)' that features some enjoyable animation and solid voice acting. There isn't all that much to say about it, really. It's entertaining right the way through and culminates in a suitably unsettling way. It's one of the stronger entries in its series. 7/10.

Zero Sum Equation.
southdavid28 August 2022
This final episode of the first season of "The Boys: Diabolical" is confirmed as being the only one that tells a supporting story directly in the world of the main series, this being an insight into one of Homelander's early missions and the origin of his personality disorders.

Announced as Vought's most accomplished hero since Soldier Boy, The Homelander (Anthony Starr) is introduced to an optimistic public. Madelyn Stillwell (Elizabeth Shue) spies an opportunity to tie herself to the new star but warns him to be wary of fellow Hero, Black Noir. Homelander's first mission is a hostage situation at a power station and though advised to wait for Noir's arrival, the hero spies an opportunity to impress.

Initially designed to be watched before season three, this episode does take on some deeper resonance having watched that season and seen what happens between Noir and Homelander, in particularly why Homelander assumes that Noir will always be with him.

The animation style is more akin to something like Amazon stablemate "Invincible" in that I found it serviceable if perhaps lacking in flourish and the vocal performances are generally done by the initial actors, with Anthony Starr, Giancarlo Esposito and Elisabeth Shue returning to voice their roles.

It doesn't perhaps give us anything that we don't already know about the characters, this was unlikely given the fact that not everyone who watches "The Boys" will also watch this, but in a series that was a mixed bag, this was one of the better ones.

I really hope for to really see for Homelander!
lilsilver-3531212 October 2023
I really hope for to really see: 1. Homelander becomes president.

2. Homelander's supersonic scream to rupture the ears.

3. Homelander's direct clone Black Noir.

4. Homelander destroy a giant asteroid the size of Texas, which weigh over 4.6 quintillion tons and entry speed of 11,200 meters per second, it can destroy the moon twice over (59 exatons of TNT Moon level).☄

This is for the Homelander fans to know about Homelander:

1. Vought had to keep hydrogen bombs strapped to Homelander at all times, because they had no idea what else could possibly kill him (Hydrogen bomb can measure from 100 kilotons to 50 megatons).

2. Homelander's enhanced vocal cords are 20 times more powerful than the ones of a regular human, he's able to produce screams loud enough to rupture the eardrums of a dozen people around him.

3. Homelander can be upscale to Stormfront, who can create tidal waves and hurricanes powerful enough to destroy entire villages and towns (8.6 Megatons of TNT), and Tek-Knight, who destroyed a meteor the size of Texas (4.6 qunitillion tons and entry speed of 11,200 mph it can destroy the moon twice over meaning he has enough strength placing him on moon level).

4. Billy Butcher claimed that superhumans can swim across the Sun, where it can be over 27 million degrees Fahrenheit.

5. Billy has also claimed that some Supes can outrun tachyons, which are theoretical particles that move faster than light (100,000x faster).

6. Homelander's heat vision can emit over fourteen billion joules per attack.
