Season One Review

The next show on the Guardians top 50 shows of 2022 was season two of this sitcom / Comedy drama that I'd never even heard of before. I watched the first season first, obviously, and whilst I'd accept that the pace might take a little acclimatisation, I did enjoy it.

Having returned to her hometown following the death of her sister, Sam (Bridget Everett) struggles to find her place. Through her awful job she reconnects with Joel (Jeff Hiller) who idolised Sam when they were at high school, though they weren't friends. By introducing her to his choir group, slowly Sam starts to make friends and find some happiness.

Whilst "Somebody Somewhere" is genuinely funny, it's only really a sitcom in terms of its 30-minute episode structure. It's much nearer to comedy drama. We're spared the actual death of Sam's sister, but the aftermath figures heavily. Sam and her other sister Tricia are antagonistic towards each other. Her parents, already struggling to manage the farm they have only have things worse when her mother's burgeoning alcoholism has taken a turn for the worse. I will say again though, this is a funny show Everett delivers Sam's sardonic, but not mocking, dialogue with aplomb. She's genuinely brilliant. As is Jeff Hiller, who I was only really familiar with from the last season of "American Horror Story" but he's very funny as Joel, immediately obsessed with his new best friend.

It's quite a slow-moving show, which might be off putting for some, but that pace does allow for Sam's recovery to be both gradual and believable. In fact, believability is a particular strength of the series where each of the characters have various shades to their personalities and none are stereotypes.

I can understand if it's too gentle or slow for you, but I found it really enjoyable and will definitely crack straight on into season two.

For me the penultimate episode of the series. Thank you, the writing, the performances and the oh so simple, yet powerful message. To each and everyone of you, find your peace..

An ode to being human

Life can be hard. We all screw up. And we can still laugh and show one another mercy. So much of who we are and can be in one short half hour. This is the high mark so far of a show that is becoming one of my favorites all time.
