Filler episode

"Los protegidos" is a fun series, with its characters' personalities well established by this point, and the interrelationships very interesting. Sadly, as with many of Spanish TV series, this episode is just filling.

TV series in Spain are normally around one hour and fifteen minutes, one hour and a half episodes, which makes for much padding and unnecessary situations. Things that should be kept for maybe forty-five, fifty minutes are stretched as much as possible. This episode is another example, as, basically, nothing happens.

The "family" is settled in the neighborhood, the children go to school, but Mario needs to find a job because they don't have enough money. Also, the older children go on a trip to see if they can find a spot without getting lost just by using maps and compass. So we get Mario losing control of a class of little kids and Culebra is hit on by Claudia while lost on the woods... Basically nothing that advances the plot. "Los protegidos", as other Spanish TV series ("El internado", "El barco"...), does a great job on making us care about the characters and on developing their relationships (too many changes of couples, though) but sometimes they just forget they are telling a story, just seeming to care to tease us with situations that make us wonder if A and B will get together, or if C will finally kiss D, or if actually A and D are the ones that will end as a couple.

The mystery per se, the society that's kidnapping little children with powers and how they got their powers, etc etc, is forgotten except for like two minutes. So if you don't watch it, you could actually keep with the story without problems.
