CBS is nearing a series order for what would be an event-series revival of crime-lab procedural “CSI,” with Paula Newsome, Matt Lauria and Mel Rodriguez joining the cast, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The Anthony Zuiker and Jerry Bruckheimer series, which aired from 2000-2015, was a longtime hit for the broadcaster. Centering on the crime-solvers of the Las Vegas Crime Lab, the original cast starred William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger, George Eads, Gary Dourdan, Jorja Fox, Paul Guilfoyle, Robert David Hall, and Eric Szmanda. In later seasons, Laurence Fishburne and Ted Danson succeeded Petersen in the lead role.
This iteration has added Newsome, a longtime film, TV and stage actor. She is most recently known for her performance opposite Henry Winkler and Bill Hader as detective Janice Moss in HBO’s “Barry,” as well as a 12-episode arc on NBC’s “Chicago Med.” Other television credits include “City of Angels,...

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

One of the biggest film stars of the 70s and 80s, Hawn left acting and producing behind for 15 years. She talks about Hollywood, patriarchy, dancing – and how meditation changed her life
Goldie Hawn is Hollywood royalty, but that’s not how she sees it. Sure, she won an Oscar at 24, for her role starring opposite Ingrid Bergman and Walter Matthau in 1969’s screwball comedy Cactus Flower, and was a box-office favourite for much of the 1970s, 80s and 90s. The ultimate tongue-in-cheek ditzy blonde expanded successfully into producing, too, with movies such as Private Benjamin and Overboard. Kurt Russell, her co-star in the latter, has been her partner for 37 years. And yet, she says: “I consider myself more a dancer than anything else.”
Her mother was a dance teacher and, pre-fame, Hawn performed as a ballerina and go-go dancer before being spotted on a can-can line in Los Angeles and drafted into TV comedy.

Anna Faris is speaking out about her engagement!
The Mom actress appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden Tuesday and confirmed her engagement to cinematographer Michael Barrett when the host pointed out her “unbelievable” ring — “Who are you marrying, Mark Zuckerberg? Rockefeller?” Corden quipped before congratulating the actress.
After asking Corden if he would “audition” to be the officiant at her upcoming wedding, Faris decided that she is likely the best woman for the job.
“I want somebody that’s humorous that also brings heartfelt sentiment, that doesn’t talk too much about themselves,” she said, explaining what she wants in an officiant.

Swoosie Kurtz has signed on to the multi-cam comedy “Call Me Kat,” formerly “Carla,” at Fox opposite Mayim Bialik.
The project is based on the BBC original “Miranda” created by Miranda Hart and received a series commitment at Fox back in September. It follows Carla (Bialik), a 39-year-old woman who struggles every day against society and her mother (Kurtz) to prove that you cannot have everything you want — and still be happy. Which is why she spent the money her parents set aside for her wedding to open a Cat Café in Louisville, Ky.
Kurtz’s character is named Sheila. Sheila grew up in Louisville and subscribes to very traditional gender roles. She views her daughter Kat’s unmarried status as her own personal failure. A charming narcissist, Sheila has used her sex appeal to date an endless array of men since Kat’s father died.

Fox is moving forward with its long-gestating American adaptation of the Australian comedy miniseries “A Moody Christmas” as a holiday event series, Variety has learned.
The single-cam comedy follows Dan Moody as he returns home to spend Christmas with his dysfunctional family. When he arrives, he’s met with the inevitable madness of a family whose members are all hiding things from each other.
Like the original, the Fox series will run for six half-hour episodes. Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg, and Tad Quill will write and executive produce the Fox version. Fisher and Greenberg recently co-wrote the remake of “Overboard,” with Greenberg also directing. Quill most recently created the series “Angel From Hell,” and his past credits include shows like “Scrubs” and “Spin City.”
Original series creators Trent O’Donnell and Phil Lloyd and executive producer Jason Burrows will executive produce the new version along with Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannembaum.
