A "Cinderella-ish" story from Thailand
gee-159 January 2022
A pretty young teen comes to the defense of her chubby bespectacled classmate (who is being bullied) and they become close friends. He moves away and the girl experiences some personal and family reversals that convert her prettiness into dowdiness. In the meantime, the chubby friend has matured into a very handsome man who, years later, initiates contact with the girl. She is shocked to see what he has become and equally shocked when he mistakes her beautiful best friend for herself. She decides not to correct his error and thinks that will be the end of it. Unfortunately, this childhood friend turns up as her boss at a magazine where she's been recently hired. In addition, her friend has secretly continued to see the man without disclosing that she is actually not his beloved childhood friend. Romantic hijinks ensue.

Apparently, there is a Korean, a Japanese and a Chinese version of this plotline. (This one hails from Thailand). It's really nothing more than a Cinderella story but its set-up allows for some nice comedy and drama.

Ploy (the main female character) is initially a bit irritating in her enthusiasm and positivity but the character settles down by series' end. And the actor playing Kevin is able to retain some sympathy despite his initial harsh treatment of Ploy (when he doesn't know who she is). Tula (the second male lead) creates a truly positive alternative to Kevin with his goofy antics that overlay a true affection and devotion to Ploy. Ran (the betraying friend) does most of the drama as she falls in tormented love with Kevin. I do think the series plays fair by presenting us with enough of her background to help us understand why she would do what she does. She's not a villain just extremely vulnerable.

This particular production is a bit uneven with its "zaniness" uneasily coupled with overwrought drama. And, as seems to always be the case with these Asian series, it goes on longer than it really needs to. But even with those flaws, I found it to be a fun watch.
