A good date movie
johno-2117 January 2010
I recently saw this at the 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival in its North American premiere. Patricio (Patricio Ochoa) known as "Pato" is a chef and has had only one long term romantic relationship and that lasted only six months. He's just an average looking guy but he has a stunningly beautiful good friend in Francisca (Francisca Benedetti) who he's been friends with for eight years. She is distraught and needs a shoulder to cry on after breaking up with her cheating boyfriend (Diego Munoz). They decide to get out of the big city for the weekend to Francisca's family beach house in Los Vilas Bay. Pato is hoping with just the two of them there it may turn into something more. On the way they encounter the lovely free-spirited Sofia (Sofa Garcia) who is hitchhiking across Chile to her uncle's hotel where she's been offered a job. This is a small, low budget film by a crew of filmmakers who are making their film debuts but it's a pretty good first offering by writer/director Joaquin Moran in his first full-length feature. Moran has done short films, TV commercials and videos before turning to the big screen. Even his co-writer of the screenplay, Macarena Dominguez, is new to film and is a psychologist by profession. Ochoa had no acting experience in anything while Benedetti had never acted either and is a fashion model and Garcia is a recent graduate of drama school. Only Munoz is an established actor but has the smallest role of the small ensemble. I spoke with several people I knew who also saw this film and they really liked it. I would give it a 7.0 out of 10 and recommend it.
